Sideboard

Did you ever feel like you just want to see your opponents randomly quit Magic? And make them angry against unstoppable combos? And make them more angry because you spent just a few bucks to build your powerful grixis deck?

If the answer is YES! you're looking at the right solution for you. Grixis Teachings Control.

If you're not familiar with this archetipe, let me explain it: this Draw-Go Style deck simply revolves around Mystical Teachings, using it to find every answer to any threat you may face. Obviously, you have to run a high number of instants; and the great thing of this deck is that it is composed almost interely by instants, so you can get everything you need at the right moment with Mystical Teachings, burn, removals, sweepers, also win conditions. It's a true control deck, that focuses on stabilizing the game with powerful spells and lots of useful cantrips. Note that:

This deck has evolved a lot since its starting configuration. It has now become faster, and aims to dig through the deck like no other. The number of cantrips gives us a consistent card advantage, and the package of 3x Mystical Teachings + 4x Anticipate let us see more than half of this deck, letting choose the perfect answer or the perfect win condition. You will usually cast Mystical Teachings on 4th turn, to get a Consume the Meek, a removal spell, or more frequently a Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir. Anticipate will help in the mid-late game to find the missing piece of the combo or that counter we need. The strong aspect of this deck is the inevitability. We win with a lockdown combo with Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir and Knowledge Pool : Teferi won't allow the opponent to play instant-speed spells, the Pool will force the opponent to play instant-speed spells, since they come on the stack from exile. = The opponent can't play spells. From this point we steal creatures from his exiled cards, or we simply land a Laboratory Maniac and wait. We're also able to search for the entire combo with a single copy of Mystical Teachings: Cast to get a Teferi, flashback to get a Treasure Mage thanks to Teferi's ability, get a Pool with the mage's ability, cast the Lockdown. We won't wait the perfect card desperately drawing and hoping to find it, we'll get it.

Now, let's see some card choice and considerations!

  THE CORE OF THE DECK

INSTANTS

  • Lightning Bolt: If you play red in modern, play this card.

  • Condescend: Another card I love. Early game, you will usually counter everything for just 2-3 mana, and in the late game it becomes a powerful counter thanks to the high number of lands we will have access to. The scry 2 is beautiful to set the right draws we need.

  • Anticipate: The second main engine of the deck, it's relevant at any point of the game. Filtering the deck to send useless card to the bottom and getting something I need, is what I want.

  • Consume the Meek: It's an instant, it wipes the board of everything smaller than 4 mana, it Smothers everything we don't want to use a Terminate on. Simply great.

  • Dismember: 1-of answer for the largest threats of the format, this card is too powerful to not include it in our arsenal.

  • Electrolyze: Staple in every U/R Control deck. Deals 2 damage and cantrips, I say yes.

  • Into the Roil: I personally enjoy having this card in hand everytime. It bounces everything I didn't counter/destroy, it cantrips when I have the right mana, it can save one of my finishers.

  • Logic Knot: Late game Counterspell, it's great because we don't use our graveyard.

  • Mana Leak: Another staple in control decks.

  • Mystical Teachings: The card that gives the name to this deck. Should I add more?

  • Terminate: The KING of every creature removal spell, just 2 mana to get rid of everything annoying.

  • Volcanic Fallout : In my meta, full of weenie aggro and little creatures, I must run this. Fetching it with MT saved me so many times that I can't think of removing it.

CREATURES

  • Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir: This is one of the best blue creatures I've ever seen. Even if we don't talk about the combo, it's a 3/4 body that curves perfectly with Mystical Teachings. On his own, this mage will give us the opportunity to cast creatures in EoT, to fetch them with MT, but primarly to drastically reduce the quantity of spells the opponent can cast and that can hurt us. Once Teferi hits the board, the opponent can't counter anything, can't cast a removal in our turn, can't EoT draw cards. He will be restricted to his main phases. Also note that Teferi curves perfectly with the Pool, so if you T4 Teachings, T5 Teferi, T6 Pool, T7 watch the opponent cry in a corner.

  • Treasure Mage: This little creature is here to give this deck a bit of consistency. If you don't have a Pool in hand after Teferi, flashback Teachings to get this mage and get the artifact. It's more important than it seems, since it's the only way to effectively fetch a Knowledge Pool from the library.

  • Laboratory Maniac: This is the solution for the 5% of the opponents that won't concede upon Reflecting Pool resolving. You have aaaall the time of the world, so take a seat, wait some turn, draw it, cast it and send in exile, cast an instant, watch the opponent and smile. Now simply wait for the opponent to draw the last card from his deck and lose.

THE ARTIFACT

  • Knowledge Pool : Call this the finisher of the deck. That card that will seal the game. 95% of the opponents will quit after it resolves, and it will ever resolve. Why? Because we will cast it ONLY after Teferi hits the battlefield, so it can't be countered. We only run 1 of this because we can fetch it with Treasure Mage and even with Mystical Teachings, giving us a virtual quantity of 3-4 Pools tutorable throughout the game. Don't cast it without Teferi in play. Never. Remember that his ability says that you can cast exiled cards, not YOUR exiled cards. So, if you exile a Teferi from your library, the opponent could cast a Bolt, steal it, and lock you down. Seriously, never do it.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND

  • This deck has a high "fire" potential, with all the burn and Teferi's unexpected damage. Keep in mind that burning your opponent with some bolt is a valid strategy.

  • Cast your finishers only once you stabilized, so don't cast a Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir if you don't have some form of protection in hand. The risk is to see the opponent kill it on his main phase the next turn.

So, this is it! Leave a +1 if you like the deck, and suggestions are welcome, as always!
