You definitely want the full 4 thirst and Condescend

@ PlattBonnay -- Where do you suggest I find the room for them?

Cut 2 fabricate and 1 Steel hellkite

I wouldn't entirely call it "Dirt Cheap" at $100, it is budget, but not extreme budget

November 7, 2014 2:58 p.m.

@ PlattBonnay -- What about dropping all 3 Fabricates for one Thirst for Knowledge, one Condescend and one Treasure Mage?

@ poorpinkus -- The deck's namesake comes from a Challenge to which I entered this deck. That aside, it is half the price (or less) than the majority of Mono-blue Tron builds that I've seen.

Okay I understand now

That could definitely work, in playing with my Tron deck I've found that fabricate has pretty much always been a bad Treasure Mage, and you've definitely got enough targets to play the full 4 TM.

Another card to consider is Treasure Cruise. It can be uniquely good in a U Tron deck because even though grave hate still makes it difficult to play and less powerful, you are pretty much the only deck that can actually play it through the hate by hard casting it.

Would Grand Architect be good for this deck? At the very least it's a 2-colourless producer, and you can use it to buff your creatures, although on the other hand now that I think of it it'd be hard to get the 2 blue mana

November 7, 2014 10:39 p.m.

@ PlattBonnay -- Treasure Cruise is definitely something to consider, and that is a good point. How many and where would it fit, though?

@ poorpinkus -- is hard to achieve with this deck. I've thought about a MUD build with Grand Architect and Master of Waves for loads of mana, but never put it together. I don't run any creatures that would benefit from his buff, and the creatures I do have should not be used as Sol Rings.

In the sideboard, what do you wish to accomplish with Monastery Siege? If you are looking for draw, Dreamstone Hedron is a dream come true. If you are looking to protect your permanents, Spellskite is skite in the face of your opponent. Why is Oboro, Palace in the Clouds used? If you are worried about land destruction, Crucible of Worlds is a better option and can be used to recur Tectonic Edge when in the attrition battle / bring back transmuted Tolaria West (I am aware that Crucible of Worlds is expensive) Otherwise, keep going at it!

@ miracleHat -- Monastery Siege is here to combat burn and removal. While it's somewhat slow, coming down on T3 can give me an edge and/or time to find the Tron lands. It's a watered down and on-color Leyline of Sanctity in most cases. I have yet to test it, but I saw it suggested by OhTheNoises the other day and agreed that it has potential. Spellskite is certainly an option, but it won't eat two Bolts in a row.

I like Oboro because it's a non-basic blue source that comes into play untapped. I honestly haven't had it hit the board in the dozen or so games I've played, so I'm still waiting for it to hit and see its uses. Crucible of Worlds is expensive, but it's worth a shot. Maybe I'll try these changes out tomorrow.

If you want tomorrow, you could test out this deck against a burn deck on cockatrice as well. Tron help for Tron help?

January 31, 2015 10:35 p.m.

Sure, if there's any deck you'd like me to play just give me a heads up and I'll find a list and try to learn a little bit about it. Again, I'll try to let you know if I can make it. Not sure how bad my homework is.

I am fine with anything. Please do not choose Splinter Twin though.

I don't think you should remove the Platinum Angel altogether because of his use to stall against a lot of burn and infect match ups. I personally really like Ugin, the Spirit Dragon, but I can see his weaknesses. Often times he's overkill, but I think you can keep him in for the time being. The problem arises when you don't have any tutors for him, so a one-of Ugin really doesn't do as much as a one of Platinum Angel. The Steel Hellkite definitely isn't that useful in most matchups and is too slow. He lacks the instant board presence of Wurmcoil Engine, Sundering Titan, Platinum Angel, and even Batterskull. All of those have the lifelink or some other presence that makes casting them worth it. Remand is almost decisively better than most counters due to the cantrip. Four treasure mages seems a little absurd for you only to tutor a total of 7 cards. Blightsteel Colossus just requires too much for Mono U Tron; you might as well be playing Eldrazi which is obviously a bad idea. The deck is too slow to get that much mana.

February 3, 2015 9:17 p.m.

@ Marotta -- Often times I find myself wanting to drop Steel Hellkite before Wurmcoil Engine so that I can get the one-sided wipes going. I never need to activate it for more than 2-3, and that still leaves me with plenty of room for counterspells.

I agree that Remand is better, but the deck still fundamentally functions without it. I'm trying to acquire the more necessary pieces before moving to the luxuries.

I haven't ruled out Platinum Angel completely yet, where would you recommend finding room?

Blightsteel Colossus doesn't come in from the SB often but is a nice addition when my opponents start bringing in the artifact hate.

Hey, I also run mono blue tron. Fabricate and Batterskull are worth taking a look at. Torpor Orb and Leyline of Sanctity are good in the board. Karn Liberated Emrakul, Remand and Eye of Ugin are worth taking a look at.

February 11, 2015 8:43 p.m.

@ CommanderMath - I'll respond to your suggestions below:

  1. I run Treasure Mage over Fabricate because it gives me a body. With the testing of Sword of Feast and Famine, I've been debating a split between the two, but have yet to determine if the Sword will stay.
  2. Batterskull is less effective than Wurmcoil Engine in my experience. While it dodges removal, that's why I have counterspells.
  3. Torpor Orb may be the replacement for Chalice of the Void I've been looking for.
  4. How would I consider playing Leyline of Sanctity without any white sources? I have Monastery Siege in the board which is a watered down version.
  5. Karn Liberated and Emrakul are too expensive ($) and fit much better in a different shell
  6. Remand will find its way in with a split between those and Mana Leaks once I get my hands on some

Thank you for the suggestions and +1, I appreciate it.

Your idea about Repeal only being good when tron is online is completely false, repeal makes for an excellent tempo play, only remand in the deck tops it in that sense. The sword appears to have no place here also.

March 6, 2015 4:09 p.m.

arosen223 says... #22

I agree with the sword, and Repeal, if anything, spell burst is really only useful when tron is online, and still you usually have a better play. IMO repeal should be x2 main and x2 sb because you run into so many Stony Silences and Blood Moons

March 6, 2015 5:56 p.m.

@ scottemery & arosen223 - I agree that Sword of Feast and Famine is an odd choice. It's just a thought that I was trying out. As for Repeal, I understand your concerns and will probably add one or two back in. However, I did find myself wanting to use it with a lot of mana up (like Spell Burst) and still think Ugin is a better large-CMC drop. It is a great low-cost tempo play though. I may remove one Ugin and the Sword to put two back in and see how that goes.
