Behold Gary, Blessed Perfection

Modern Devotion Midrange Mono-Black

Gbot

Sideboard

This deck was inspired by Metroid_Hybrid's deck Devoted to Obliteration..

This is Mono-Black devotion in the name of the greatest black four drop ever printed: Phyrexian Obliterator

We're going to be disrupting the enemy's hand early game with Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek and Despise; the latter of which is more of a preference choice as it will typically find targets we care about without some of the draw backs of the other 2 hand attack spells.#

Liliana of the Veil and Gatekeeper of Malakir do a good job of following up on that early disruption by taking care of their first creature or adding further pressure to their draws. See also Nyxathid

Phyrexian Obliterator is our Primary Win Condition, as such, ensuring his resoltuion and survival is the main goal. If we can get 1 or 2 of this guy in play then we're usually in a good position. Supported with other midrange permanents in the form of Whip of Erebos, Vampire Nighthawk and Gray Merchant of Asphodel, we're less likely to die die to burn if we can stall them out early.

But, where would we be if we didn't have efficient removal? To fill this role, we have Dismember and Murderous Cut. Both of these spells can be cast for relatively low mana investments and with the aid of fetches and hand attack, delve is enabled really quickly.

some of the more fringe cards in the deck are: Lashwrithe - with our mana base being fairly 1-note we have plenty of opportunity to get reasonable returns on this guy. Not to mention the benefit of fitting this on Obliterator; He has Trample, remember?

Night's Whisper + Phyrexian Arena - We need card draw. Dark Confidant is really good, but will more often than not is likely to nail us for 4 or 5 life. with Burn and delver being so popular, this isn't a optimal. With that in mind, these are really our best options. Arena is another permanent for the devotion count can really deliver on it's mana investment, and whisper is my preference over Sign in Blood. They both perform the same job, I just like the new duel deck art.

Sideboard This section still needs work. mostly the same as the deck's inspiration but could probably still be improved. The main contention I have is Mutilate vs Bile Blight or Drown in Sorrow. In some cases it just feels too slow, but it has greater reach. I'll be testing out the change to Drown and will report back.

Updates Add

Out with the old and in with the new.

No more are the clunky 4 cost equipment and marginal nighthawks. The future is more white.

I've added in the Tidehollow Scullers and subbed in Nightveil Specter. More denial of resources and better things to do on turn 2 are really what I want to be doing I think.

Have also been considering Herald of Torment as a more flexible 3-drop, but more testing is required.

Mutilate in the side has been replaced with Drown in Sorrow. it wipes out the weenies while maintaining my board of 3 and 4 toughness dudes. I think it's probably better than Bile Blight, but I'm not sure.
