Sideboard

NOTE: This deck is retired. Please see deck-large:marduu-mentor for what I'm currently playing.

Fair creature control with a Nahiri 'combo' finish. The key points in how it plays are:

  • A large removal/discard suite to help stabilize

  • Lingering Souls clogs up the field and provides a clock once you've dealt with early threats

  • Ajani is replaced by Liliana of the Veil once I can get a third. He's reasonable to play but weaker and 4 CMC slots are packed with Nahiri

  • Small subtheme of lifegain to counter the greedy manabase and provide a margin against aggro and Burn that reduces the need for specific sideboard responses

  • Finish with Nahiri ultimate or creature beatdown

  • Mardu colors allow for a selection of strong sideboard hate cards

Yes, Bob + Emmy is a nonbo. This build of the deck is not for the faint of heart. That said, it's a low probability event that you have Bob in play and then also flip Emmy with him. And there really isn't a better consistent source of card advantage in our colors. So - FORTIFY! - and take the risk. The alternative is replacing Emmy with Griselbrand for a safer bad flip but weaker Nahiri finish. I don't think that's worthwhile in the long run but will hurt that rare game you -15 yourself.

But why only 3 Dark Confidant then, you ask? This is because having a full playset makes having two in hand/play at once fairly common. While one Bob is a reasonable risk to take, having two out makes it far more likely we'll commit death by Emrakul. And so to avoid this the second Bob would be stuck in hand until the first died, which negates some of the card advantage the first is giving us!

It is possible to squeeze a second Ghost Quarter in if your local meta has greedy mana bases. I wouldn't do this by default, however.

Wall of Omens is also an alternative to playing Confidants in the main. This means relying more heavily upon the combo win. So if you do this I recommend having 3-5 creatures in your sideboard for a transformative move into more midrange beatdown as your opponent will side out a lot of removal after game 1.
