Mono-Black Devotion was pretty popular and pretty dominant not too long ago in Standard.
I wanted to see if I could mix a Demonic Pact deck with a Mono-Black Devotion deck and make it work.
Demonic Pact can be tricky. It's just too much advantage to not play but it's built-in risk is deemed by many to be too much to overcome and most are unwilling to risk losing to their own card. But just like Liliana learned, nothing is impossible when one has enough power, not even breaking a contract with demons. It's all about how you plan to remove it or, preferably, return it to your hand when needed.
I want to be bouncing the enchantment back to my hand to be recast via green
Invasive Species
or blue
Rite of Undoing
. Lastly there's also destroying it via Sultai Charm or Ancestral Statue but that's our last resort.
(Ancestral Statue is
Invasive Species
replacement post rotation. Yet another card that can return Demonic Pact to hand. At only more and the mana can be any color we can start to take green out if we want but don't forget about Sultai Charm needs green. Sultai Charm offers versatility as another removal spell in case you don't need it to remove enchantment. It can also be used to draw even more card advantage in a pinch.)
We might need more destroy Enchantment cards to safeguard yourself from losing the game to Demonic Pact but I haven't found that I have needed it so far in play tests.
Reclamation Sage is a okay option, like the charm it destroys not returns the Demonic Pact to hand though. Still it's almost better than the Charm because it stays behind as a creature for a blocker.
Mono Black Devotion
While we don't have Pack Rat we do have plenty of powerful Black Spells at our disposal.
We still have the all star common Gray Merchant of Asphodel. We get great utility out of him by returning him to hand and recasting him for a repeatable ETB damage and lifegain via the
Invasive Species
or blue
Rite of Undoing
.Just don't forget about your Demonic Pact and go and lose yourself the game now...
Here's some of the new stuff that fits in.
Erebos's Titan
is perfect for the devotion count towards a Gray Merchant of Asphodel. Use plenty of Black Removal spells to keep their board clean and it'll stay indestructible.
Rite of Undoing
is a good way to get creatures off their board and return your Demonic Pact in the same move. I also include a bunch of Languish as a form of board wipe. Your titan being a beefy 5/5 will survive but most other things won't.
Demonic Pact Decks
The Demonic Pact deck is kinda popular right now because of Pro Tour Fate Reforged champion Antonio Del Moral Leon's Decklist. His list included a Woodland Bellower which he says ties the deck together because it gets you whatever you need to get Demonic Pact off the field. He also uses the ever popular Courser of Kruphix. I didn't want to go that green, i wanted more of a Mono-Black Devo vibe.
So my plucker of choice is Sidisi, Undead Vizier.
You cannot beat 'search your library for a card. Put it in your hand.' It literally does give you whatever you want and it only helps fuel Delve on Rite of Undoing to get the Demonic Pact back when your running out of turns left.
Sidisi is just a perfect way to pluck and grab a needed card especially with the Demonic Pact needing to come off the field sooner rather than later. If you don't have a
Invasive Species
or
Rite of Undoing
or Sultai Charm you NEED ONE and SOON! or you'll lose the game. You know... no big deal.
Well Sidisi will get it for you. Sidisi is just also great defense and is good at grabbing a Gray Merchant of Asphodel at the most opportune time and immediately counts towards 2 devotion for it. Which is your main victory condition. Big Blasts from Gray Merchant of Asphodel.
Rite of Undoing
is pretty important, it's why I even included blue in the first place. Mainly it's another way to bounce your Demonic Pacts back to your hand. It also helps clear the field for your
Erebos's Titan
though. And it becomes cheaper and cheaper to cast the longer the game goes on theoretically. Your previously cast instant/sorcery cards will help pay for Delve but the dual fetchlands make it way too easy. If you wanna break and abuse Rite of Undoing you need to run at least a few Fetchlands. Delve is a joke when you have fetches in your deck and 10 or so cantrips (instant/sorcery spells that resolve to the graveyard). Not to mention Sidisi will be exploiting creatures to your graveyard.
Thought about including;
Merciless Executioner can be cast as a removal spell for 3 to get rid of their one creatures to trigger indestructible on your Titan.
Priest of the Blood Rite is a nice bounce target for
Invasive Species
in case you don't have a Demonic Pact out. It'll continually put out 5/5 flyers.
Infinite Obliteration
a good answer to decks that rely heavily on one powerhouse creature. Take away there linchpin and the one thing vital to their success.
Thoughtseize and Duress /
Despise
also is good disruption buying you the time. As this deck's mana curve is kinda high.
