Uril Hexproof

I ordered an Uril, the Miststalker today and am curious as to what enchantments and creatures would be good to be run along side him, so I'm open to any and all ideas.

Since you already ordered him I hope your playgroup is alright with him. Uril is among one of the most annoying commanders to face.

As far as Aura's you can't go wrong with Ethereal Armor , Daybreak Coronet , Rancor , Madcap Skills , Bear Umbra , etc. Also Sterling Grove wouldn't be a bad card to consider either to protect your enchantments.

Any potent effects, really. Indestructibility is decent. Anything that gives Uril some durability (like Indrik Umbra ), things that give you benefits more than Uril (like Spirit Loop ), and things that make Uril an anti-son-of-a-bitch machine (like Eldrazi Conscription ).

Bonus points for having all 3 on one card.

Hint ---> Bear Umbra

Here are 3 different Uril decks I've been needing to delete from my profile for awhile now:

Uril, Zandl's New One

Uril, the Miststalker

Gregg's Uril

JWiley129-My play group doesn't play a ton on EDH, so this might end up being more for Commander League at my LGS, and the people there are very competitive and seasoned players. They've done SCG tournaments and placed well, 1 guy won states, etc. I have a more casual EDH deck built with Rith, the Awakener if my group doesn't want to face the new one I build.

Uril tends to be less and less good at higher competitive levels. Even with Hexproof and potential Indestructible, there are tons of ways to deal with it. The biggest hurdle for Uril to jump over is sacrifice. Unless you have Tajuru Preserver or Sigarda, Host of Herons , Diabolic Edict is going to wreck your shit unless you get really crafty or play more creatures out (which slows you down).

As zandl said, Uril falls off pretty hard. Aura-based voltron is a pretty fragile strategy, and it gets blown out quickly in competitive circles. Zur the Enchanter is the notable exception, and it only excels in 1v1.

That's not to say the deck isn't worth building. Just be aware it's only "effective" in casual and somewhat low-power metas, and it is likely to make you a target.

Right. Uril, the Miststalker is still a very powerful Commander. He's simply fragile and, if you get hit at the right time, incredibly vulnerable.

I could always play some cheaper Hexproof creatures, I'd have to go looking for some really good, a few that come to mind are Witchstalker and Gladecover Scout , but I can always look up other things that would be helpful. I have yet to go to Commander League, so I don't know quite how things are with the meta, but I can always work on it afterwards to see what would help.

You might also consider Defense of the Heart which one Uril deck runs in my meta. Gets out some big dudes, like Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite , which either buff or protect Uril.

Look for enchantments that give him combat tricks, evasion, etc. Battle Mastery , Runes of the Deus , Eldrazi Conscription , Rancor , Daybreak Coronet are just some of what comes to mind. Just make him a beast in combat and you should have no problem winning through commander damage, just be careful, some play groups dislike him because he is so easy to buff and hit for 21.

Look at some equipment to go with him like: Loxodon Warhammer , Swiftfoot Boots , Whispersilk Cloak .

Plenty of other creatures that buff with enchantments as well: Aura Gnarlid , Kor Spiritdancer .

Spells to include would be things like: Retether , Idyllic Tutor , Three Dreams

I like running umbras and vows with uril. The best enchantments for him seem to offer either evasion / protection for a 2 shot - or ultimate fearsome power for a one-shot.

Uril isn't as fast as the most competitive decks and won't kill someone before comboing out turn 4 if they are capable of i. Otherwise, It seems to depend a lot on the match-up:

I could add more to the list. Because of the situational nature of what you need based on the match-up, I think tutors would help alot. Uril can almost become like an "aura toolbox" type deck ... almost ... or maybe I just want it to be a lot o f time / wish I had the tutors for it.

This is kind of a sketch-up of what it could look like, I'm on a semi-budget, so maybe no more than $250? Uril, the Hatemonger. It's not even close to done, but it's kinda a drawing board of what it could look like.

Not getting the name ...

You don't really want creatures like Witchstalker and Gladecover Scout . They don't do anything. They're just little beaters. Go for utility.

r3v13w-I'm not really the best at coming up with names, it was just the best I could think up at 1 in the morning. I just know a Hatemonger is something/someone that incites hate in others, and given in more casual play he is tough to deal with without sacrifice or -/- effects, it seems like a card people would get to hate. I'll probably change it later, but it's the best I have for now.

Epochalyptik-I'm assuming more tutors would be good? I'm fairly new to EDH and the game in general, almost a year, so I'm not in the know of a lot of the older cards and sets and what good can come from them.

January 12, 2014 12:57 a.m.

Read some of the articles on my profile page. They'll explain in more detail the basics of what's good and what's not. There are also a couple of lists for different kinds of cards (including two broad lists for staples).

But yes, tutors are good.

Uril was my first EDH deck, and it's my prized deck. It's the closest thing I have to a "competitive" level deck, and if all goes as planned it's turn 3 lethal damage.

The way I built the deck was focusing on making everything in the deck super inexpensive in terms of mana cost, lots of early ramp to play Uril at the first chance before anyone can set up their boardstate, and then swing for a lot. This also means I can always profit off of a small genesis wave. Now add a splash of recursion and you have your Uril glass cannon. It's strong and deadly, but it's still pretty easy to mess up.

I can see the reasoning behind adding ramp. The number one thing in any match-up is getting Uril out turn3 if you can, turn 4 is still pretty good, and turn 5 at the latest. I resorted to mana dorks for this since they can also protect against those sacrifice effects for a turn or two. I also really like Utopia Vow . I can put that on one of my creatures and ramp if I need to or put it on one of the opponents' creatures if I need to. Either way it counts towards my enchantments for things like Sphere of Safety , Mesa Enchantress , or Sigil of the Empty Throne .

But I do see your point because when things don't go weill, the number one problem usually is not getting the right mana sources in the opening hand! Good thoughts and good luck to you!

Blessing of the Nephilim is a must. I mean really, 1 mana to get +5/+5... so good.
