2020 Update —Jan. 6, 2021

As of the end of 2020, this is how this deck is currently sitting. Lots of new cards to consider and I need to figure out what to cut. I think it needs some more ways to get mana to balance it out a bit and make it more stable. Not sure if it just needs more land or something else, but sometimes you can get very mana screwed while others you get flooded.

My one suggestion that I trot out for everyone's Trostani deck is Nacatl War-Pride - while this card is not all that good, it does have some weird aspects that make it interesting tech in Trostani. For one, it can make a lot of tokens - that's a lot of Cathar's Crusade triggers, a lot of Aura Shard triggers, a lot of lifegain with Trostani, and it can tie up blockers to enable a lethal attack or whatever. What's worth noting, though, is that the tokens it makes are exact copies of itself - which is to say, if you populate one, the populated copy won't be exiled at the end of the turn, and if it survives to attack it will make copies of its own. It's durdly, sure, but the potential upside is fairly high.

I also like Collective Blessing more than I like Intangible Virtue - sure, Virtue comes down early, but Blessing is generally a more impactful buff.

GoldenDemon I really like Nacatl War-Pride, definitely a maybe. I used to run Collective Blessing in the deck, but it was fairly slow and another dead card early on. Intangible Virtue may not give you that extra +2 / +2, but I think that the vigilance that it gives you makes up for it.

GoldenDemon Decided that I could make Collective Blessing fit into the deck again. I kept Intangible Virtue as well though. Can't go wrong with both.

Hahaha can't argue with that logic

Hornet Queen?

Quartz definitely an interesting and functional addition. The same problem applies to everything else on my maybe list though; What do I take out to make room for it?

Have you considered Dual Nature? It would help with getting more tokens and extra etb effects

It is an interesting possibility, but unfortunately it would help opponents as much as myself. I don't like the negative aspect of it either. Maybe as something to hold onto until later game. I will play around with it ad see.

Elspeth Tirel would rock in this deck. She gains life for creatures, generates tokens, and field-wipes everything but lands and tokens. Her ultimate ability doesn't kill her either, so says the official ruling on the Gatherer.

Make sense, her card specifically says "all other" so that would exclude her. I'll definitely put her on the maybe list. To be honest, if I owned one, she would likely already be in there despite the fact that I'm not a huge fan of Plainswalkers in Commander.

Enlightened Tutor would be really good in this deck with all the artifacts and enchantments. Ramp could also help a bit, with Birds of Paradise, Skyshroud Claim, and Kodama's Reach being my top suggestions.

Azure17 I agree that Enlightened Tutor looks useful. I'm not a huge fan of single use cards though. I much prefer ones that are permanent or have some sort of recursion.

As for the Ramp, while more is always nice, having only a couple wouldn't make much of a difference. The deck seems to run ok most of the time as far as mana goes anyway. Once in a great while it is a little slower than I would like, but there is enough life gain to compensate for it if things take a turn or two longer than normal.

Cryptolith Rite Would make for some really good mana ramp, especially with all the creatures you'd be generating with your token engines.

r3cl41m3r I think there is already one in the deck. I know it was on the want list a bit ago and it's not there now, so I think I added one and just forgot to update it. I agree that it is a very good card with the number of creatures the deck produces.

Two great cards for this are Test of Endurance and Triumph of the Hordes.

Also, why Minion Reflector?

Any thoughts on Triumph of the Hordes? To shut down other lifegain decks, also a decent finisher anyway

Thanks for the comments guys.

Test of Endurance used to be in the deck. It was cut at some point for other stuff. I liked having the extra win condition in there, but there were other things that I wanted to try out. Felidar Sovereign pretty much accomplishes the same effect as a creature instead of an Enchantment too. It might get put back in at some point.

Triumph of the Hordes is a good card, but I never liked the infect mechanic, especially in Commander. It is just too cheesy of a way to knock someone out in a game with 40 life. I try to avoid it whenever possible as do the people that I play with. It would work really well in the deck though is someone else wants to add it for their play group.

Minion Reflector combos nicely with several cards in the deck. Basically anything with an "enters the battlefield" effect can be exploited with that card. Nothing like playing an Avenger of Zendikar and getting another one for 2 mana, or similar things. Sure you don't get to keep the copy, but you get to keep the extra tokens generated or whatever from the ETB effect. Not to mention the fact that the copy you create gets haste so you can cast any creature and get a copy of it that can attack that turn for 2 mana. There aren't as many ETB effect cards in the deck as their used to be though, so it is something that may eventually get cycled out.

Nice deck! Got a couple ideas, although you might already know about how good these cards are with Trostani...Storm Herd effectively doubles your life total and Desolation Twin makes one of the biggest tokens in magic. Happy gathering :)

Both of those were in the deck at one point. I'm not a huge fan of sticking Eldrazi into anything other than Eldrazi decks (though I have done it before). The new ones are not nearly as bad as the original ones though.

That said, I had considered putting back at least Storm Herd but the real question is what to remove for them?

I haven't actually looked at any of the new cards from the last couple blocks. Definitely worth tossing Anointed Procession in there as soon as I get one. Craterhoof Behemoth was in the deck long ago, but I took him out in favor of more token producers. There are plenty of other cards that boost up the tokens and the Behemoth ended up in another deck anyway.

May 29, 2017 11:23 a.m.

Rootborn Defenses can save you from a wrath and make another of your best token. Someone already suggested but Anointed Procession really deserves a spot. Gideon, Ally of Zendikar is great since he makes an anthem to pump all your tokens permanently, makes tokens himself, and keeps pressure on with attacks. Enlightened Tutor should def be in here, being able to tutor a Doubling Season is clutch. Speaking of which, Season also makes planeswalkers enter with double loyalty and many can Ultimate the turn they're cast. Ajani, Caller of the Pride and Nissa, Voice of Zendikar help with tokens. If you're calling it a stampede things like Pathbreaker Ibex and Stonehoof Chieftain or Decimator of the Provinces can help. Archangel of Thune powers the team quickly, Heroic Intervention saves the team, Asceticism protects the team and stave off non-targeted removal or combat damage with the regeneration. Lastly, you're land count is very low for the curve and amount of ramp you have, I'd definitely try and find room for like another 5 lands...

Nice build, like where your head's at! +1

I feel like this deck needs some ramp. You're in green, so you should strive to have more lands in the early game compared to your opponents. It's odd to see less than five (I count four) ramping cards in a green deck. Here's my deck list Big Damn Heroes, I know our decks fit our personal styles, but you NEED more ramp and more lands in general. Less than 36 or 37 lands for a deck with a 4+ CMC average is not good. You want consistency. Just a suggestion.

I know the mana base is a bit wonky, but it rarely ever is an issue. Things like Awakening Zone and From Beyond produce mana tokens, which of course get doubled and so on by other cards. Between thoss, Cryptolith Rite, and some other cards, it really hasn't been a problem. Maybe 1 in 10 games or so if falls short on mana, but that can happen to any deck sometimes.

Anointed Procession is definitely going in, I just don't have one yet. As for the other stuff, I'm weird about how I make my decks and really want most things in this one to be some sort of token producer, if possible. I'm also not a fan of one shot cards in Commander, so I tend to avoid instants and sorcery cards were possible. The same is kind of true for Plainswalkers, but I really couldn't pass up the chance to put Elspeth Tirel. I am finding that she works really well and might give them a try again (especially with Doubling Season in the deck as you mentioned), but I don't actually own any others. I might have a Garruk Wildspeaker around somewhere.

I kind of want to add Illusionist's Bracers back into the deck as well. It was really entertaining when combined with Rhys the Redeemed and even Trostani, Selesnya's Voice herself.

As is always the case though, what should I remove to add new things? I have the hardest time trying to figure out what to eliminate. Some are kind of obvious, Hardened Scales is not entirely all that useful compared to other things that have similar effects in the deck, but what else to cut? Ant Queen is rather lackluster and could likely go (I'd rather have a Hornet Queen but I don't own one).

Same goes for adding some ramp/more land. It would be nice, but what to swap out for it?

June 3, 2017 10:16 p.m.

I always thought Trostani's Summoner was a bit lackluster for the cost and not something I'm excited to draw late game like I should be with 7 cmc cards.

I also don't care for Primal Vigor as there are plenty of other doubling effects that DON'T apply to everyone at the table. Sucks when a card you have in play is helping an opponent win.

That's only 2 freed up spots but if you take that lens, of worst-case situations like top-decking late game or having a card end up dead because your opponent's deck could exploit it, you might find a few other things to dump. And while instants and sorceries seem too short-term, if they allow you to knock off an opponent or get a huge advantage it's worth more than a permanent that doesn't have a dramatic impact or requires other cards to function. A well-timed Heroic Intervention that saves your entire board is potentially more valuable to have sitting in hand waiting than a creature or enchantment you can cast whenever but really doesn't help you win. Tutoring a Doubling Season early game for example is worth more than a small token maker in the long run as it's harder to kill enchantments and as it sits, while an opponent hopes to draw Erase, it's accumulating pure value. Even removal can turn the tides and give you enough advantage that others can't catch up. I like to play at least one card to reshuffle graveyard to get added value from spent instants/sorceries.

Perhaps make a "sideboard" of cards you intend to add but don't currently own, so people stop bugging you lol, mention in description
