Mainboard Roster Update v.3 —Nov. 13, 2023
A lot happened with this update, so I'll do my best to detail each change and the general playstyle shift that is occurring.
The Core Shift
-
the deck will now pilot on the core fundamental that we're playing Aggro, and then Midrange concepts. Below I'll detail cast-favorite cards that left the decklist and why.
-
I have a new set of rules for the list:
-
Rule : All spells will have mana value total or less, see exceptions by instance.
-
Rule : All spells will maintain colored symbols (i.e.; ) maximum, see exceptions by instance.
-
Rule : 'Selfish' cards or 'Fundamentally Worse' cards will be replaced with obvious candidates.
The Cards Cut
-
Bellowing Tanglewurm is too steep a mana cost to remain in our list for the relatively little value it tends to provide outside of being a Pile piece.
-
Bitterthorn, Nissa's Animus probably got replaced with fast mana pieces like Mox Diamond, or something to that effect.
-
Carnivorous Canopy provided little to the discussion outside of the nuance and flavor it afforded with Proliferate. It will be substituted by something to the effect of Force of Vigor or potentially a Nature's Claim.
-
Contagion Clasp and Contagion Engine both came out obviously for fast mana pieces. It sucks in a cutting edge competitive setting but the fact remains that these pieces simply aren't fast enough to be useful.
-
Contagious Vorrac got replaced by better ramp spells such as Three Visits and Nature's Lore, which are cool right alongside Thirsting Roots.
-
Courage in Crisis, while potentially cool in some other settings, has honestly just sucked for me. 3/10 recommend for anything outside of a Scales Build.
-
Defiler of Vigor never got cast because it cost too much to cast and did next to nothing. I don't remember a time where I got to cast this creature for value.
-
Expand the Sphere got taken out because it violated one of the core rules of re-construction.
-
Explore was a wonderful inclusion in the list initially and was replaced by Up the Beanstalk. A good candidate to return if Ramp/Draw is that necessary.
-
Garruk, Unleashed went the route of almost every other Planeswalker within my list, because it's mana value was simply too steep.
-
Glistening Sphere was too specific a rock for what all the other fast mana was already able to accomplish.
-
Green Sun's Twilight just didn't do enough, although upon second inspection may hold up a spot - to be determined.
-
Guardian Project was using a mana value that should be winning me the game in order to do nothing on entry and draw me cards later.
-
Karn's Bastion hurt the principle of the one Planeswalker that remains in the Mainboard.
-
Melira, Sylvok Outcast is strangely a great candidate to be the sideboard- holds up a good hard counter in mirror matches and for baordwipes.
-
Noxious Assault violates one of the core rules and saw replacement by Triumph of the Hordes.
-
Primal Rage was simply not doing enough for what Kodama of the West Tree could be doing for me.
-
Prosthetic Injector violated a core rule of construction.
-
Rot Wolf (imo) could have remained in the list if it were slightly stronger, toughness wise.
-
Smell Fear seems good for my build.. until you notice that the Proliferare happens prior to damage.
-
Tamiyo's Safekeeping came out because Veil of Summer exists, and provides a tiny bit of other value to the discussion in that and can't have fun now.
-
Tribute to the World Tree just wasn't as cool as The Great Henge, nowhere near as effective, and violated two core rules whereas The 'Henge only violates one.
-
Ugin, the Spirit Dragon is a bomb still and may end up sitting in the sideboard alongside Melira.
-
Unnatural Restoration is just too nuanced for what Noxious Revival can do for me.
-
Vivien Reid, Vorinclex Flip, and Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger are all subject to the violation of the too-god-damned-big rule, and while holding up some significant value, were never seeing play.
-
Zopandrel, Hunger Dominus was too nuanced and Questing Beast felt way better for keyword soup at mana.
Special Thanks
-
An ode of gratitude to NoobNoob275 for helping with the most recent draft of changes. A powerful duelist in their own right and someone who earns my respect, I'd recommend anyone check out their lists.
-
As an Alela, Artful Provocateur user, as well as a Muldrotha, the Gravetide user, they (Noob) won't see me take Seedtime out of this list.
