A jund midrange deck that I'm planning to run during FNM at my LGS. I've been thinking for a while how much better the mana base for shard colored decks is right now and after seeing some videos of Caleb Durward from channel fireball playing a jund list I figured I would give it a shot.

Beaters

  • Woodland Wanderer: A 6/6 with vigilance and trample to outrace the rhinos running around. Even if happen to not draw the correct mana I've never had this smaller than a 5/5.

  • Thunderbreak Regent: A 4/4 flyer to stop mantis riders in the air and I still get value if my opponent has to use targeted removal on it.

  • Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury: Usually dashed in, the pump can give me the last few points of damage that I might need to win and she gets around sorcery speed removal.

  • Tasigur, the Golden Fang: Can easily be cast on turn 4 to if necessary. He's an efficient beater, can be a decent blocker and he's a source of card advantage.

  • Dragonlord Kolaghan: 6 damage in the air for 6 mana and she gives my other creatures haste. Most people also don't really expect the second ability.

  • Heir of the Wilds: An efficient early game creature that can trade with anything on the ground not named Gideon and can prevent my opponent from attacking.

Utility

  • Catacomb Sifter: 3 mana for 3 power and 4 toughness over 2 bodies. Dodges all the color based removal and helps me get around sac effects. Let's me ramp into 5 or 6 drops if I feel like it and gives me incidental scrying to prevent mana issues.

  • Den Protector: Can be a 2 drop, 3 drop or 5 drop depending on the situation. Gets me back anything I need from the graveyard. Goes great with K. Command for the ultimate card advantage.

  • Elvish Visionary: An early game chump blocker that replaces itself. Can be gotten back with Den Protector or K. Command for more card advantage.

  • Kolaghan's Command: The ultimate piece of card advantage. A guaranteed 2 for 1. Getting back my creatures and disrupting my opponent's hand or killing creatures in the process.

  • Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker: A 4/4 flyer to follow up a Woodland Wanderer, can be ramped out on turn 4 by a Catacomb Sifter and acts as creature removal if necessary.

Removal

  • Fiery Impulse: A shock that turns into a bolt. Helps deal with unflipped walkers and early game aggro creatures.

  • Ruinous Path: Kills almost any threat my opponent can play and can get me a late game beater if necessary.

  • Murderous Cut: The necessary unconditional kill spell that gets rid of whatever the burn spells aren't cut out for.

I took a slightly different version of this deck to FNM and managed to come away with a top 4 placing going 3-1 during the regular matches and winning the first top 8 round after which we split the prizes.

The version I ran had -4 Den Protector and -2 Thunderbreak Regent and had a full 4 Elvish Visionary, a full 4 Catacomb Sifter, Liliana, Heretical Healer  Flip, Surrak, the Hunt Caller and Languish.

Match 1 was 2-0 against esper tokens. Game 1 was won by 3 Woodland Wanderer. Game 2 I led with either Duress or Transgress the Mind and took something Important that I can't remember followed by Virulent Plague and only not drawing a real finisher prevented me from winning earlier.

Match 2 was 2-0 against R/G landfall aggro. Both games came pretty close and I dropped to near half or less than half my life fairly quickly. I managed to find enough answers and cheap creatures to stall the board until I was able to take the wins.

Match 3 was 0-2 against abzan blue. Game 1 I was stuck on 3 lands for a few turns and it was enough for my opponent to secure the win. Game 2 my opponent was mana screwed for a while but I only saw 1 Woodland Wanderer and Tasigur. I almost won with a bunch of removal, Heir of the Wilds and Catacomb Sifters but I wasn't able close out the game before my opponent stabilized and stole the win.

Match 4 was 2-0 against white weenie. Highlight of the night goes to having me play Dragonlord Kolaghan and explaining what it does to my opponent since it sees so little play and swinging only to be promptly blocked by a Dragon Hunter, the irony was palpable. Game 2 was won purely by a flipped Liliana, Defiant Necromancer  Flip, a Tasigur and an elvish visionary that I kept recurring.

In top 8 I went 2-1 against the same abzan blue player. 3 knock-down drag-out games where I managed to out-value my opponent.

MVP would go to either Heir of the Wilds or Catacomb Sifter. The 2 bodies from the sifter was a major part of winning the aggro match ups and the sifter itself drew plenty of removal to prevent me from scrying. The heirs were a major player during the abzan match ups. My opponent so worried about saving his removal for my dragons and woodland wanderers that they sided out their Silk Wrap and couldn't attack through a 2/2 deathtouch.

The cards I was least impressed with were Languish and Dragonlord Dromoka. I only saw languish once and it could have easily just been another Radiant Flames. Dromoka was in my sideboard and I just never came across a match where I felt like taking something out for her.
