Ronin Cliffrider

Creature — Human Samurai

Bushido 1 (When this blocks or becomes blocked, it gets +1/+1 until end of turn.)

Whenever Ronin Cliffrider attacks, you may have it deal 1 damage to each creature defending player controls.

Always happy to see Batwing Brume in a deck. It's an old favorite of mine when I first started playing in college, about 10 years ago.

Isshin is easily my favorite commander, and one I've enjoyed playing a lot the past year. I'm not sure if you were aware, but sadly, Bushido does not work with Isshin's trigger, as Bushido only triggers when the creature blocks or becomes blocked. Ronin Cliffrider, which you already have in you 99, is probably the one most worth keeping, since it can take out opposing creature tokens if they're small enough.

If you decide to remove the Bushido creatures, that does open up some opportunities for more draw/impulse options available to Isshin, like:

  • Idol of Oblivion - More useful if you are running a more creature token heavy strategy.

  • Plumb the Forbidden - is one of my favorite draw pieces, especially in response to board wipes.

  • Tome of Legends - Fairly helpful, & easy enough to get a few more counters on.

  • Commissar Severina Raine - If you aren't opposed to Universes Beyond, she is a slightly worse Skullclamp and is also an excellent finisher for Isshin decks, especially token focused ones.

  • Gruesome Realization - Like a Night's Whisper with a modal option to also soften up an opposing board, especially useful against other token filled board that lack power/toughness modifiers of some kind.

  • Professional Face-Breaker - Is kinda like a budget-ish version of Tymna the Weaver if you squint hard enough. Both reward you for going wide with attacks.

  • Tocasia's Welcome - Another option if you have lots of creature tokens, but could work for you since about 20 of your current creatures are 3cmc or less.

  • Brazen Cannonade - An impulse draw for 2nd main phase after combat.

  • Karazikar, the Eye Tyrant helps keep attackers away from you, and Goads up to 2 creatures per board with Isshin out.

I hope these suggestions are helpful. Let me know if you would like any additional feedback or suggestions. I hope you have fun piloting Isshin, he is a blast.

Nice deck! If you want to lean into your Samurai flavor a bit more, I'd recommend checking out Ronin Cliffrider. It has an attack trigger that can be useful against token creature boards. Sadly, Bushido doesn't work with Isshin.

Aside from that, I'd recommend adding a bit more 2 mana rocks like Boros Signet & Talisman of Conviction. Your mana curve is a little steep, so having like 3ish more could help out your Sol Ring & Arcane Signet.

Crow-Umbra I actually didn't have it in the other list, with the Isshin effect I can see the Ronin Cliffrider being pretty good if I can keep him on field. I'll consider that when I'm moving other things around thank you!

I don't remember if you had this in your other Isshin Samurai list, but have you seen Ronin Cliffrider? It has an attack trigger that actually works with Isshin. Could be useful against defending token strats that have smaller creatures. Also kinda funny if you can give deathtouch to the Cliffrider.

Blade of Selves would make two duplicates per opponent after the first (but only the original would get the "attacks alone" bonus that so many Samurai seem to have).

Angelic Exaltation and any of the cards with Exalted

Ronin Cliffrider (especially if you drop in equipment with Deathtouch...), Ironsoul Enforcer, Nagao, Bound by Honor, Sensei Goldentail

If you wanted to add non-samuri creatures I would suggest Ankle Shanker, Aurellia the warleader, Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin, Banshee of the Dread Choir, Herald of the Host and maybe Warchief Giant

Oh wow, I didn’t even think of giving Ronin Cliffrider deathtouch, I’ll add Basilisk Collar for sure. I just included him cause doing 1 damage would be good against my buddy’s elves deck.

I went ahead and switched the commander to Akiri. I’m gonna try to squeeze in a few more equipments, I like some of your suggestions. I like Bloodforged Battle-Axe but I’m trying to keep this deck pretty budget (I already own the Jitte), that’s why I just cut Stoneforge Mystic for Stonehewer Giant . I still wanna get a Stoneforge eventually though.

Is Council's Judgment good in multiplayer? I’m new to commander and I’m used to 1v1 where you just exile anything you want.

Do you see any cards that are obvious cuts?

I would recommend Gorgon Flail or Basilisk Collar . Giving Ronin Cliffrider deathtouch is really rude.

As for commanders, I really like Aurelia, the Warleader , though I think that she's a bit build around. Here, Akiri, Fearless Voyager is a good fit. I would look at increasing the equipment count a little bit so that you can ensure card draw from her. I know it's not on theme, but stuff like Bloodforged Battle-Axe and even Bonesplitter are cheap and good damage buffs. I really like using O-Naginata in voltron decks due to its cheap cost, but it doesn't equip to as much stuff here without getting a bushido buff. That being said, it equips to your commander so it's still pretty good.

If you were going to try Aurelia as commander, I would recommand adding Helm of the Host to the list. Even without adding her, it's still a good card here anyway. It makes more samurai for you and allows you a combo out with Godo.

While this may be a redundant suggestion, I was thinking about Syr Konrad, the Grim . Assuming that you half someone's life total, any creature that is put into the graveyard from you simply killing it with a pinger is going to do one damage to each opponent. I offer a theoretical example; Syr Konrad is out and you've halved an opponent's health from 30 to 15. If you attack with Ronin Cliffrider , for instance, you will deal 1 damage (with deathtouch) to each creature the defending player controls (let us say for the sake of the theoretical it was 5 creatures). They die and go to the graveyard, dealing 5 additional damage. Our opponent has lost 5 life, he or she has 10 left now. This may be more effective later in the game in a similar scenario if you played a Goblin Chainwhirler .
