Wednesday Night Magic League: Undefeated Finish

JakeHarlow, 9 years ago

So I decided to go and play at Jacksonville Game Center's Wednesday Night Magic tournament this week. It seems like everybody comes out to play in this because it's a free tournament that offers lots of store credit for undefeated players after four rounds of Swiss. As a result, the meta is brutal. People from all the other stores in the area come out with their top-tier net-decks to grab store credit. I was unfazed and trusted in the might of the ancient Dragonclaw Clan -- the all-too-unrecognized pillar of ferocity and vigor that is Temur. Here's the tournament breakdown. I'll note before I continue that it seemed like I couldn't lose on the play against Dark Jeskai. Feels good to have a solid mainboard against one of the meta's top decks.

Wednesday 10-28-2015: Wednesday Night Magic League; 1st Place Finish

  • Round 1: Mono-Green Eldrazi Ramp; 2-1 Win (a fast and powerful deck that ramps even harder than mine into huge cards like Nissa's Renewal, Ugin, the Spirit Dragon, and Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger; I was just a bit too quick with my threats and Stubborn Denial was able to keep him off of his spell-based ramp; Disdainful Stroke did hard work too)

  • Round 2: Dark Jeskai; 2-1 Win (Dark Jeskai is beginning to feel like a good matchup for me, since I tend to place too many threats on the board for them to handle in the opening game, providing I draw enough land; they are faced with the tough decision to use removal on my mana creatures or save it for my real threats; if I draw enough land, which happens often, I tend to curve out regardless of mana creature disruption from their end; this often leaves them without answers for my Turn 4 plays and onwards)

  • Round 3: Dark Jeskai; 2-1 Win (my Game 2 loss was due to mana issues)

  • Round 4: Abzan Aggro; 2-1 Win (a very rough match that saw me win a one-sided Game 1 and lose an equally one-sided Game 2; Game 3 was grindy but I trusted to the ramp-and-threat plan, drawing two Roasts to help close out the game; Dragonlord Atarka was able to destroy an Anafenza, the Foremost and a Warden of the First Tree before being hit with Murderous Cut; Shaman of the Great Hunt and Rattleclaw Mystic helped me close out the game after I hit a morphed Den Protector with Roast to prevent a repeat Anafenza; the match was still grindy and I was forced to attack with an animated Lumbering Falls and a final Rattleclaw Mystic to win the game; an exhilarating win against a known Grand Prix player and multi-PPTQ champ)

Updates + ALL FOILED OUT!

The following changes were made to the maindeck:

+1 Satyr Hoplite : Swapped out Goblin Guide for this and it's proven to be better in 9/10 situations, -1 Goblin Guide : Having haste was good, but the tradeoff of giving opponents value + not having Heroic wasn't worth it, +1 Glaring Aegis : Just put in another 1-drop Aura to replace Insight, -1 Magmatic Insight : Just too clunky to play in a deck where I needed every land to stay on curve, I considered putting in, Faithless Looting, may reconsider this later,

Foils obtained: +5 Plains (BFZ 250 Full Art) +2 Mountain (BFZ 265 Full Art) +1 Arid Mesa (Expedition) +1 Mana Confluence +1 Spirit Mantle

The only foil I'm missing (that I still want) is Sacred Foundry Expedition. I'm not too concerned with getting the expeditions of the other fetchlands, but maybe later down the road. I also want a black-bordered Plateau, but they're so expensive... ;_;

Fixing the Mana Curve

I added some small flyers for early blockers. Also, added Eater of Days because it works really well on turn 5 with the Sundial of the Infinite.

Not Good Start, But Works

The deck played well if I could get the right cards out first. I am going to refine it.

Added to Maybeboard:

Only looking at a few cards from Battle from Zendikar. Adjusting removal and trying to lower the curve.

For now, mostly waiting to see what comes out of Commander 2015.

For anyone willing to give suggestions, i would like to make this deck play more smoothly, such as not having to stall the game to cast Ulamog once he is in hand.

Official Integration

I am pleased to announce the official addition of Siege Rhino and Abzan Ascendancy to the sideboard!

Revamped

I felt like this deck lost a lot of the original flavor recently, so I've decided to go back to the initial concept I had. Quest proved to be quite strong, however, I'm going with fun over power here.

Winning 1st place on my very first comeback FNM

minorokt, 9 years ago

This fool was able to to win an FNM in the area winning against a Green ramp Eldrazi deck, a B/W allies with Drana deck and a Jeskai deck. Used my swinging speed, my old skill in playing and combats tricks especially Feat of Resistance to zip past cheap destruction and defenders throughout the event..

(sorry if I massacred the names as I'm not used to it, I even kept calling the Jeskai deck by its old name "Stars and Stripes" before I knew what's the official name is. Hehehe!)
