Wednesday Night Modern

Can't remember my matchups nor my results other than getting at least one 0-2 and leaving the night with no wins at all. I did change my deck and sideboard to tailor it more to my local meta.

Ended up cutting out Spirit of the Labyrinth. Not sure if it was the right call, but it was convenient as I didn't have one on hand.

From a Casual Deck to a Competitive Deck
nuggnugg, 6 years ago
After playing Jhoira for the past few months, I realized that she is my favorite deck by far. The planning, the card draw, the risks. I love them. I then decided that it was time to upgrade the deck. Usually, I never get to this point. I usually make a bunch of decent decks and just keep playing new ones like that. So I figured that if there was ever a deck to upgrade finally, it was this one. So I added a few cards that buffed the deck to unbelievable amounts. The deck can win on turn 3 with the perfect hand. It can also be a deck where you just chill and draw cards until you decide to win.

Sideboard: Out: 1x Thoughtseize --> IN: 1x Engineered Explosives I really needed Engineered Explosives since it deals with so many fast decks like Bogles and Affinity. I am still considering cutting out the last thoughtseize for another Collective brutality since I really only need Thought seize vs control but Collective Brutality works against control and Burn. It is also another discard outlet. More testing is needed before I finalize my SB.

-Overwhelming Stampede +Garruk's Packleader I think I have enough finishers and ways to tutor for those finishers that I don't need Overwhelming Stampede. Stampede can't be Natural Ordered or Worldly Tutored for, and sometimes +5/+5 isn't enough to finish a game. Craterhoof does what Stampede does, but better and works with the mentioned tutors. Garruk's Packleader comes in to keep the curve the same and provide some additional card draw, which is really what this deck needs to power through its 42 land.
Experimenting with Gerrard
Alphamew17, 6 years ago
Decided to add a couple copies of Triumph of Gerrard in exchange for two Ghostly Prison as an experiment to see if buffing creatures on board is a better gameplan then delaying opponents' creatures.
Deck constructed and testing beginning!
Swetybalzack, 6 years ago
I have constructed the deck and am play testing it. in place of 3 Watery Grave and 3 Drowned Catacomb i'm running 3 Dimir Guildgate and 3 Submerged Boneyard. This hinders the deck slightly as we have to play around the first couple of turns playing the tapped lands but that's fine. This deck wins easily against B/W Vampires, Mono-white Lifegain, Jeskai Control, Izzet Guttersnipe, Mono-Blue Djinn, Rat Colony, G/W Enchantments, and RDW. It has a struggle against really one deck that it consistently loses against, and that is U/G Merfolk. It's too aggro with unblockables. Thinking about running some mass removal spells in the sideboard to get over that hurdle. I'm thinking Ritual of Soot, Settle the Wreckage, River's Rebuke, and/or Sleep.
RAN INTO GRAVEYARD HATE! Well howdy-doody! I ran into a deck running Ashes of the Abhorrent and it completely shut me down! For this I have added in a Knight of Autumn into the Sideboard to try and counter this threat.

Just found out it’s not modern legal. If anyone can tell me some good replacements that would be very much appreciated
Refinement
Fektoer, 6 years ago
Cut out a lot of underperforming cards and added the following cards:
Easy to activate when you drop it either t2 or after a sweeper. After that it quickly runs away with the game.
Additional card advantage plus a big combo with Sensei's Divining Top allowing you to draw the top card of your deck for 1 mana.
Gives the deck some extra filtering , combo's nicely with Entreat the Angels, Future Sight and the fetch lands. Basically gives the deck additional consistency.
Very, -very- good equipment and probably the first equipment you fetch if given the chance. Any attack ramps you with one land. Works nicely if you have Sword of Feast and Famine equipped since that also untaps the land you just fetched.
Additional consistency, card advantage and miracle trigger.
Big finisher in the deck especially when you can miracle it. Even if you can't miracle it, it's still pretty good with Temmet making your angels bigger and unblockable.
Any permanent-based deck should play this. Late-game you have so many permanents in play that any sweeper is back-breaking. Teferi's protection breaks the symmetry of any sweeper and allows you to swing back when everything phases back in.
Big X-draw spell. Ideally you don't have to tap out in your turn. Leaving mana open for your activated abilities, counterspells and stuff like this.
One game was won by copying someone else his mulldrifter and copying that token again, etc etc. Instead of relying on someone else to play the mulldrifter, why not play it ourselves. Perfect to stick underneath a Mimic Vat or equip with a Blade of Selves.
Carries equipment like a boss and gives you some card advantage to boot. A good lieutenant to our commander.
Moar control! Also not bad to make some copies of. While they won't persist, it's still a counterspell on a stick.
Big finisher for the deck. Might be overkill but seems sweet.
Very versatile card becoming either the best creature on the board or copying one of your equipment.

Complete revision

After playing a few hands of my old deck, I've rebuilt from the ground up basing on new techniques I've learned with some helpful folk at my local games shop, and an accidental combo I discovered soon after.
The idea here is to get out a Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca and Deeproot Waters early as possible. Everything you cast after then generates an additional token for chump blocking and population.
This is all about +1/+1 counters and making the creatures unshockable with Herald of Secret Streams. The Forerunner of the Heralds will allow to tutor HoSS from the library, of if not needed, something else equally as useful, like Silvergill Adept for card draw.
The more times you can tap 5 to put +1/+1 on everything with Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca the better, ultimate combo would be having 10+ merfolk, and Jace, Ingenious Mind-Mage on the board. tap out for +1/+1 counters, use Jace's second Loyalty ability to untap them all again, the cast Herald of Secret Streams, it will either land allowing for a devastating and unblock able attack, or save them for blocking if no HoSS is present.
Don't forget to abuse Kumena's ability on the opponents end step for some free +1/+1 counters or card draws before your turn starts.
Another win con in here is Hadana's Climb, making something so big it'll be hard to kill via combat and really do some damage.

Teferi's Protection Update

So, after 3 FNM runs with it, the meta shifted and I discovered an unfortunate fact about Boros Angels.
Golgari absolutely trashes it.
Every card in their deck counters the whole strategy of this deck. It is rough. In maybe 40 games, I have only beat Golgari once. I mean 1 game, not even the whole match. Even against janky homebrew Golgari, they just always have answers for the big angels, and their big explorers are too big for the vampires to get through.
So I am changing the build!
-4 Adanto Vanguard, -3 Bishop's Soldier, -3 Mavren Fein, Dusk Apostle, -4 Integrity / Intervention, -1 Response / Resurgence, -1 Shalai, Voice of Plenty
+4 Fountain of Renewal, +3 Dawn of Hope, +2 Settle the Wreckage, +4 Diamond Mare, +4 Ajani's Pridemate, +2Deafening Clarion
Also made numerous tweaks to the sideboard.
The idea is to build a lifegain combo shell with a lot more sweeper removal, then curve the top end out with Angel threats. This gives the deck way more gas when everything gets killed, and even the 2 drops can grow into game-ending threats.
Testing it this week at FNM. I'll let you know!
