Frondland Felidar

Creature — Cat Beast

Vigilance

Creatures you control with vigilance have ", : Tap target creature."

Magma Tsunami

Sorcery

~ deals X damage to each creature and planeswalker. Destroy all artifacts with mana value X or less. Creatures, planeswalkers, and artifacts lose indestructible until end of turn. If an artifact or creature would be put into its controller's graveyard this turn, exile it instead.

Something to create "ward tribal", like how Frondland Felidar supports vigilance.

{{user:psionictemplar}}, thanks for taking the time to provide me with your comments—they're much appreciated.

I slept on your well-thought-out advice and I've taken the points made into consideration. I've also taken a stab at explaining my intention behind the deck, below, just to clarify the style of gameplay I'm looking for.

But first! I'll address your comments in chronological order:

Regarding tap lands, they were my first choice for budget concerns. But, now that I understand the speed (or rather lack thereof) effect, I'll look into acquiring the ones you and Balaam__ recommended.

  1. I'm looking less at Kaheera as a companion, but you're spot on by noting the creature types are not in alignment. Although I really like the synergies between Frondland Felidar and Kaheera, the Orphanguard

  2. Added BoP in place of the Elves.

  3. After you mentioned it, I took a good look at the purpose behind the swap mentioned above. Initially, I thought the artifact (Behemoth Sledge) might be longer lasting with an added flexibility to achieve the same effect as Unflinching Courage. But I also see the rationale for both suggestions, and I like it. I would go with Daybreak Coronet if I changed the legality of this deck to Legacy so I could make better use of the stacking life gain abilities of it and Armadillo Cloak. If I keep it Modern, I'll add in All That Glitters instead of Unflinching Courage. Nice touch!

============

  1. The intentions behind the fog effects might have been near-sighted (and flavorful at best), but they only work when up against other creature-centric decks. Playing responsively at Flash or Instant speed is something I enjoy and having the tools at my disposal to handle threats is in my wheelhouse as well. I also liked the notion that I would be able to buy my time with either a fog effect or an ambusher and return in kind by equipping the sledge and tapping any other creatures in my way with Frondland Felidar, essentially having enough fog and ambushers to discourage any physical assault until I had boosted my other creatures for a crippling attack or two.

  2. Cultivate is definitely not needed and was a leftover from an earlier / alternate build. Thanks for the pointers, here.

  3. In line with the fog effects, my purpose for including Ephemerate was to save my ambushers or any other creatures from targeted effects that made it through the fog. My response to losing enchantments was to use something like Retether or Replenish which is also flavorful and in line with the "come out of nowhere" theme.

============

Regarding the other cards, I like Oversoul of Dusk and Unbreakable Formation but the others don't necessarily fit into the theme or style.

All in all, I really appreciate the time you spent on this. It's been eye-opening and educational to say the least and crafting my response has helped me better understand the direction I'd like to take my deck with a few much-needed tweaks. Any other suggestions are more than welcome!

Got it. Made the change, Balaam__. Thanks for the tip!

I'm also considering a few other changes:

1) Trading 2 Frondland Felidar for 2 Loxodon Hierarch. I'm thinking the synergies with Ephemerate and Bronzehide Lion are longer-lasting without having Kaheera, the Orphanguard in play.

2) Trading 4 Llanowar Elves for 4 Birds of Paradise OR 4 Sylvan Caryatid.

3) Trading 2 Behemoth Sledge OR 2 Unflinching Courage for an extra Shield of the Oversoul and one of either card not being traded above.

What are your thoughts? psionictemplar, please feel free to weigh in, too!

Possibly the strongest Landfall card in the current meta is Scute Swarm, which can easily be the base around which a Landfall deck can be built. Scute Swarm with landfall generates a swarm of 1/1 insect tokens. Felidar Retreat then puts +1/+1 counters on each creature (including your insect tokens) with each Landfall. Felidar Retreat also gives your creatures vigilance for the turn. Frondland Felidar then comes in and allows you to tap any creature with vigilance to tap any of your opponent's creatures. As you will invariably have more creatures than your opponent, tap your smallest creatures to tap opposing creatures and attack Unblocked.

Conclave Mentor adds +1/+1 counters for each +1/+1 counter that you place on creatures. Murasa Rootgrazer helps Landfall by, each turn, allowing you to either return a land to your hand or play an extra land. Similar increased landfall results from Roiling Regrowth and Scale the Heights.

Then come the options and/or personal choices. Do we add extra counters with Vastwood Fortification  Flip or double up on a Landfall effect with Skyclave Pick-Axe? Is Kazandu Mammoth  Flip stronger than Wildwood Scourge? Ranger's Guile can protect your Landfall creatures, but Light of Hope may be more versatile. Can we afford to give up Roiling Regrowth for Hydra's Growth? Can we fit in Heroic Intervention against controlling decks? These are the choices that make your deck unique and personal.

Murphy I am tempted to put in Frondland Felidar into this deck.

I built something similar, but haven't played it yet (White Kitties with Green Bugs). I found the potential interactions between Frondland Felidar, a swarm of tokens and Felidar Retreat to be quite interesting.

The 3 Felidars from Zendikar Rising combine in an interesting fashion. Felidar Retreat generates +1/+1 counters and gives your creatures vigilance. Prowling Felidar generates counters with landfall but quickly becomes a powerful attacking creature. Frondland Felidar allows you to tap any creature with vigilance to tap a creature that your opponent controls.

Iridescent Hornbeetle and Scute Swarm then generate loads of tokens that can take +1/+1 counters, gain vigilance and tap, to tap your opponent's creatures. Hopefully this will leave your bigger creatures with no blockers

Yup Knixx,

Everything looking good. Lots of cross connection between all the different combo pieces and support for the Earthcraft outside of the Squirrel Nest combo. Very creative work here.

Only thing I would include would be Ajani, Caller of the Pride for double strike (and flying).

You could even utilize Green Sun's Zenith now that it can pull Yannik, Scavenging Sentinel for you if you wanted. I like that Frondland Felidar has really taken on the evasion role that my Rhonas the Indomitable provides, very slick.
