The Wizards announcement with the release date and more details is here

So here we go:

Another year of commander precons and another year of excitement. What are you looking forward to? What do you hope for? What would you really dislike?

PhoenixOfChaos says... #1

Ah, I see! Looks like it's working. Thanks so much! I really appreciate all the hard work!

November 9, 2015 11:51 a.m.

NarejED says... #2

Ouch. I had no idea it was that much work.

Would you be better off waiting until the cards are released on Gatherer and just linking things from there, or is that impossible?

November 9, 2015 11:51 a.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #3

Never use gatherer images. And we don't link like untap does, a submissions is something that inputs the data directly into our system permanently (or until removed by hand). We don't link anything, as the information is typed out manually and the images cropped and saved manually.

Gatherer images result in terrible quality.

These cards can't be found:AEthersnatch, Herald of the Host, Mystic Confluence

November 9, 2015 12:02 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #5

The cards from M to Z most likely haven't been accepted yet and it seems like all the new cards weren't accepted either. Can't do anything about it till yeago fixes stuff.

Femme_Fatale says... #7

So all the non-reprints that I submitted from Thursday onwards.

November 9, 2015 10:21 p.m.

Wike900 says... #8

Erm, well I wouldn't know about reprints or not, I just checked to see if it gave an error when I tried to put them in the deck. I could try to put in the C15 tag I guess. Gimme a bit.

November 9, 2015 10:32 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #9

No as in, every single one of those cards are a brand new card that has never been printed before (ie: non-reprint) that I submitted from anywhere between Thursday morning to Sunday night.

November 9, 2015 10:34 p.m.

Wike900 says... #10

Er, it is also a bunch of other cards. I tried using the C15 tag on the GB deck and it returned these cards did not have printings.

Acidic Slime (C15), Altar's Reap (C15), Ambition's Cost (C15), Barter in Blood (C15), Blood Bairn (C15), Bonehoard (C15), Butcher of Malakir (C15), Mulch (C15), Mycoloth (C15), Overwhelming Stampede (C15), Phyrexian Plaguelord (C15), Phyrexian Rager (C15), Polluted Mire (C15), Primal Growth (C15)

November 9, 2015 10:40 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #11

Grr.

Well, not going to do anything about it as I'm not going to go through each and every single submission to see if they are in the database or not. I'm going to let yeago fix this issue.

November 9, 2015 10:48 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #12

Now try.

November 9, 2015 10:52 p.m.

Wike900 says... #13

Alright, the card you are missing is Seal of Cleansing. Everything else is good.

Took so long because tappedout was crashing and I left for a bit.

November 9, 2015 11:49 p.m.

CChaos says... #14

Of the new commander cards per deck, do you guys think any will become staples?

November 10, 2015 5:30 a.m.

clayperce says... #15

Here's my $0.02, CChaos, for whatever it's worth:

November 10, 2015 6:04 a.m.

Lanzo493 says... #16

Don't forget Shielded by Faith. It's good simply for the reason that Zur can fetch it. At the very least, it might hit $1.

November 10, 2015 8:37 a.m.

kengiczar says... #17

I think Karlov of the Ghost Council should become a staple in Oloro. The guy is just to good. Can beat face or exile repeatidly, can be gotten back with Ojutai's Command, Oloro triggers him from the command zone. Just freaking awesome.

I also agree with everything clayperce and Lanzo493 posted except for Blade of Selves. I mean I certainly expect people to play it, but it seems lackluster to me. An equip of would be been leagues better.

November 10, 2015 9:07 a.m.

Ohnoeszz says... #18

Good list Clay. I'd drop the blade and add:

Mizzix's Mastery - its bonkers. It won't be a staple because it can't go in everything but it's really strong. Sins of the Past costs 2 more mana for the same thing. Past in Flames costs 4 to start then the mana for whatever you want to cast. This can be a better version of those cards with wincon upside.

November 10, 2015 10:39 a.m.

clayperce says... #19

Good call, kengiczar and Ohnoeszz on the Blade of Selves.
I was blinded by the Myriad mechanic and didn't even look at the equipping cost. Ouch.

MTGgoldfish posted an interesting take on the question of future staples, from a financial viewpoint: Financial Review of Commander 2015. I thought it was totally interesting that the biggest financial impact may come from a potential increase in the popularity of Snake tribal!

1/1 Snake
Sssssssssssnakes!

November 10, 2015 12:49 p.m.

clayperce thanks for that. that was a super interesting read.

November 10, 2015 1:05 p.m.

Phaetion says... #21

I tested the Izzet and Golgari decks. Here's my analysis:

The Izzet deck is the undisputed winner here. Once you stabilize, you can win quite easily. I had enough mana to cast Meteor Blast for 13, all targets at one opponent. Also, Call the Skybreaker becomes broken with Mizzix of the Izmagnus because it will only cost 2, and with enough land cards in hand, you can Retrace it multiple times a turn.

The Golgari deck, while strong, takes a bit of time to set up. You start faster than the Izzet deck, yes, but you have to assemble all the pieces and pray that they live long enough to ensure you're in Magical Christmas Land.

I've only tested the stock lists, but Mizzix is a general I'll definitely look forward to using again. It's nice to finally have a not-so-broken spellslinger general (cough Melek cough)

November 10, 2015 4:52 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #22

I knew the Izzet deck would be the most powerful.

November 10, 2015 5:12 p.m.

Phaetion says... #23

Am I correct that you can target a creature or player multiple times with Meteor Blast? That was something I was thinking about.

But, yeah, I 'Moiled through the deck quite quickly with Arjun, the Shifting Flame too. The deck is a blast to play.

November 10, 2015 5:18 p.m.

Lanzo493 says... #24

Sorry, but you can't. It says X targets, but it doesn't say you can choose the same target multiple times. That means if you put too much X into the spell, you'll start hitting your stuff.

November 10, 2015 5:34 p.m.

Phaetion says... #25

I would guess that it's assumed you could target the same thing multiple times since it's not mentioned. It's more of a behind-the-text thing.

November 10, 2015 5:45 p.m.

Phaetion says... #26

Ok, I looked it up. I was wrong. I'll have to redo that game, but my point stands.

November 10, 2015 5:52 p.m.

beakedbard says... #27

Aye Mizzix does seem to be very strong usually she combos out within 2 turns of hitting the table obviously if you keep her protected. The amount of infinite combos or more to the point reductions on infinite combos you can do is insane. Also Mystic Confluence is by far my favorite card of the set so i know which deck I'm getting.

November 10, 2015 8:41 p.m.

Phaetion my friend and I each preordered a deck. I got Izzet and he got Golgari. We're testing them against each other straight out of the box on Friday after we're done with classes. Hopefully our games work like those

November 10, 2015 9:49 p.m.

Phaetion says... #29

Everyone's experiences will be different, however, so my analysis is from only one perspective. I just redid the games. Same results, but with more notes:

-Without improving the deck, Overloading Mizzix's Mastery can be a bit discouraging.

-Lone Revenant sucks. Especially if you cascade into it with Etherium-Horn Sorcerer.

-Mizzix herself is Kill-On-Sight.

-Mystic Confluence and Wretched Confluence are amazing.

There are more, but I don't want to be exhaustive, and I don't want to ruin the experience. Personally, I got all 5 decks, so I'll be pitting them against each other for a better angle on things (I only did 1v1).

MagicalHacker says... #30

Am I the only one who feels that the new boros commanders are really lame designs? I think this is the first year where all three of the legends for a deck are commanders I would never run at the helm.

November 10, 2015 11:40 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #31

I disagree. Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas asks you to build a Boros Big-stuff deck, which is counter-intuitive to how Boros usually plays as the Weenie Rush color. Anya, Merciless Angel does encourage attacking, but you can get her static abilities active through a number of ways. The weenie rush is still the best way, but you also have any of the burn spells.

November 10, 2015 11:53 p.m.

NixTheThird says... #32

I was really disappointed when Black Market (and Phyrexian Arena) was revealed to be part of Daxos and not Meren. So disappointed to the point of silliness. I had to take a walk, clear my head, reassess life goals, slay a dragon, etc to get my head back on straight. But graveyard strats is where the heart is, so Meren it is. Daxos or Mizzix are waiting in the wings come December or January, depending on how prices shake out. But I'm gonna get to that market... and arena... one way or another.......

P.S. I'm going to echo canterlotguardian in thanking clayperce, even if it scoots a bit into econ forums instead of spoilers. Great read, hope it's correct about some of the older cards.

November 11, 2015 8:38 a.m.

MagicalHacker says... #33

JWiley129, true, but I prefer to have commanders that do something for the deck. Both of those just buff themselves up, which fall into the same lame category as Radiant, Archangel and Purraj of Urborg. But even in terms of Voltron, I'd still choose Tajic, Blade of the Legion.

November 11, 2015 10:09 a.m.

lemmingllama says... #34

@ M a g i c a l H a c k e r The Boros legends certainly don't scream "build around me!". But both are fairly solid commanders that are inherently powerful. They may not be good, but they certainly aren't bad.

Also Anya, Merciless Angel is intriguing. She is a commander that you don't necessarily want to slam down as soon as you have the requisite mana, and she gets better as the game goes on. If she retained the bonuses even if a player died, then I would probably run her.

November 11, 2015 10:18 a.m.

RedUndead40 says... #35

StuntmanTheThird, just wait it out. Black Market is doomed to a pretty big price hit with this reprint. Same with Karmic Justice since they were both only really pricey because they were single print cards.

You could probably pick up a Black Market for Meren at around $4 within the next few months

November 11, 2015 1:09 p.m.

NixTheThird says... #36

That's what the plan is, RedUndead40.

Well, unless Mizzix proves to be as broken as people fear/hope/pine for...

November 11, 2015 2:30 p.m.

Phaetion says... #37

Well, I'd say Mizzix is pretty good. The more experience counters you grab, the more kill on sight she becomes. She's also very good with X-Spells because no matter how much mana you pour into one, it will always net you an experience counter.

November 11, 2015 2:33 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #38

M a g i c a l H a c k e r - That's an argument I can get behind, but I still think that these two are a step in the right direction. Boros doesn't have many legendaries that push a "I help you do stuff" deck. But they are more interesting than legendaries like Tajic, Blade of the Legion who wants more friends so he's a 7/7.

November 11, 2015 2:39 p.m.

RedUndead40 says... #39

Phaetion, that's not how X cost spells work, unfortunately. Casting Fireball will always be a CMC 1 spell, no matter how much mana you pump into it. Which, if you already have at least 1 xp counter, you're not going to get any more off of it.

November 11, 2015 2:46 p.m.

PookandPie says... #40

RedUndead40, that isn't how X spells work. The cost of an X spell on the stack is the amount of mana spent in the X + other mana symbols.

If you have two experience counters with Mizzix in play, and you cast Fireball for 2R, you will get an experience counter. Rules here:

"107.3a If a spell or activated ability has a mana cost, alternative cost, additional cost, and/or activation cost with an X, [-X], or X in it, and the value of X isnt defined by the text of that spell or ability, the controller of that spell or ability chooses and announces the value of X as part of casting the spell or activating the ability. (See rule 601, Casting Spells.) While a spell is on the stack, any X in its mana cost or in any alternative cost or additional cost it has equals the announced value. While an activated ability is on the stack, any X in its activation cost equals the announced value."

What you said is only true while the spell is in any zone except on the stack. Fireball has CMC 1 while in the hand, graveyard, library, etc., but on the stack this changes.

November 11, 2015 2:58 p.m.

RedUndead40 says... #41

PookandPie, oh man yeah you are right. Totally forgot about that.

Well Mizzix is even more ridiculous than I thought... and even more of a hate magnet than I thought. I expect to remove her a LOT.

November 11, 2015 3:10 p.m.

Kroto says... #42

No idea who did the designs on the tokens, but having double sided tokens with identical sides seems kinda counterintuitive.

November 13, 2015 6:38 p.m.

Phaetion says... #43

What do you mean, Kroto? Like 2 2/2 drakes on one card?

November 13, 2015 7:24 p.m.

Phaetion I lost to my golgari friend twice, although that might have been because both games were 3-player matches that quickly devolved into archenemy. Apparently I play EDH like a dick :)

November 13, 2015 11:22 p.m.

Kroto says... #45

Phaetion Like having the exact same token on both sides of the card. For Izzet there's the Elemental/Drake tokens, both on the same card, but different sides, but there's also the Dragon tokens which have identical sides on the same card which seems weird to me.

November 14, 2015 12:30 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #46

I enjoy these sets, but I actually feel that having them be an annual product could cause over-saturation in that area, and lead to players growing tired of them. Perhaps if the Commander set was a bi-annual product, as Modern Masters is likely to be, it would not be in danger of becoming boring.

Having mentioned that, I also would very much like to see a second Commander's Arsenal, a product with random cards that are good for this format, rather than full decks, as well as other items, but with a larger print run, of course. That would be very nice, indeed.
