This can be a centralised place where most of the discussion around Commander 2015 spoilers takes place.

The Wizards announcement with the release date and more details is here

So here we go:

Another year of commander precons and another year of excitement. What are you looking forward to? What do you hope for? What would you really dislike?

Phaetion says... #1

That's what I want to know too. However, my guess is that it doesn't work because Kalemne needs to be in play for the experience counter thing to trigger.

Extra costs to recast commanders do not count towards converted mana cost:

903.10. A player may cast a commander he or she owns from the command zone. Doing so costs that player an additional for each previous time he or she cast that commander from the command zone that game.

117.8c Additional costs don't change a spell's mana cost, only what its controller has to pay to cast it. Spells and abilities that ask for that spell's mana cost still see the original value.

RedUndead40 says... #3

NecroPony, no unfortunately. The card's CMC will always be 4 no matter how many cost increase / decrease effects are applied to it. "Casting Cost" is different though

This card rustles my Timmies. Don't know if that's a good or a bad thing.

iBleedPunk says... #5

I am excited. The Experience Counters are great in my opinion as it makes me actually want to keep recasting my commander. Im able to buy two pre-cons when they release and I feel super giddy to see the other commanders.

Wouldn't it be cool if the Izzet one was all about artifacts? With buttloads of colorless ramp like Master Transmuter and Etherium Sculptor, and the artifact lands like Seat of the Synod. And then a big finisher combination like Memnarch with Hellkite Tyrant?

October 15, 2015 8:02 p.m.

Egann says... #7

I would rather them reprint lazy artifact cards and give us an Academy Ruins, but we all know that's not going to happen.

I believe that it is now fairly safe to presume that the generals in this set shall be from a variety of different planes across the multiverse, so I hope that at least one of them is from Kamigawa, simply to show that WotC has not forgotten about that plane, since it is unlikely that they shall be revisiting it in a full block at any time soon.

October 15, 2015 9:50 p.m.

MurderHood says... #9

@DemonDragonJ Maro did a survey on Tumblr about a month ago about what planes people wanted to revisit the most. Kamigawa was 2nd on the list...

Come to think about it if the R/W commander does something its not usually known to do (in this case big creatures matter) maybe its a preview that the colors are going to be functioning differently than they are known to. Theory but possible

October 15, 2015 10:40 p.m.

Phaetion says... #11

Pokemaster325: Kalemnae is unique in that you have a secondary strategy in R/W stompy beats. You cannot boast that with any other voltron general currently in existence. Game plan tends to go something like this:

  1. Ramp, ramp, RAMP!

  2. Cast general.

2a: Go voltron...

2b: ...while simultaneously casting CMC 5+ creatures to rake up experience counters (Proliferate works with this).

  1. General too expensive to cast? HULK SMASH!

  2. Replay general (eventually) and finish opponent off.

Thanks for the spoil ChiefBell!

Turns out there are 851 eligible creatures in ! I had no idea Boros had so many big dudes! Here's the Gatherer link.

If this is a counters matter set, I wonder if the b/g deck will be infect. If wizards isn't going that way, I could still see them adding some proliferate cards.

October 16, 2015 1:57 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #14

I dont think they'd do infect in a precon. Not these days. It's pretty hated haha, and is up there on the storm scale of mechanics to avoid.

October 16, 2015 5:37 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #15

With infect having been mentioned, will WotC ever give an official ruling on poison counters in EDH? Given that players start with 40 life, twice the normal amount, it would only make sense for a player to need 20 poison counters to lose the game (again, twice the normal amount, and half of their starting life total in both instances). Since huge amounts of damage can be dealt very quickly in this format, 10 poison counters would defeat a player too quickly and easily, in my mind.

MurderHood, that is very good to hear, and now I must ask: what was the 1st plane on that list?

DemonDragonJ, #1 was Innistrad. Here's a link to the results.

October 16, 2015 8:07 a.m.

vishnarg says... #19

But for real I'd love that. Drafting Innistrad is truly a magic experience, it's one of the most flavor rich planes ever in magic, next to Mirrodin and Zendinar I'd say. Definitely my favorite block. It also probably saw the height of my competitive magic playing career.

October 16, 2015 8:08 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #20

Innistrad was the best draft format, hands down. Very flavourful block. Great art. Fantastic cards. What I particularly liked was how difficult the draft environment was - subtle pointers. It took pros months to find certain archetypes when drafting the set. The spider spawning flashback deck didn't arrive until well after innistrad had been out.

Regardless. This new idea of giving players counters is interesting. It gives more scope than emblems because it's easier to stack them and keep track.

Will this idea of players having counters that matter for certain rules spill over to standard legal sets I wonder?

RedUndead40 says... #21

"Will this idea of players having counters that matter for certain rules spill over to standard legal sets I wonder?"

You know, I've always thought it would be cool to have a reverse-proliferate effect. Remove a single counter from any number of permanents or players? Sounds veeeeery interesting to me

October 16, 2015 12:48 p.m.

asasinater13 says... #22

I think "players having counters" has lots of tracking issues. like where do you keep track of it, where do you put dice to make sure they get seen and not knocked and known what they represent? Because of the complexity in tracking it it seems unlikely to switch over to standard sets without really good flavor.

October 16, 2015 2:27 p.m.

RedUndead40 says... #23

People have been tracking poison counters for years without too much trouble.

If all else fails, paper tracking is always the most accurate.

October 16, 2015 2:32 p.m.

asasinater13 says... #24

poison is different beause it is similar to an alternate life total to track. Counters that don't do life-related things are more difficult to keep track of.

October 16, 2015 2:33 p.m.

iBleedPunk says... #25

I doubt Experience Counters will carry over into Standard legal sets. As asasinater13 said I expect it would become more of a hassle than anything, but nonetheless its all speculation

October 16, 2015 2:36 p.m.

Canadion says... #26

They had actual poison counter tokens when infect came out. I wouldn't be surprised if they had something similar for the experience counters. But yeah, good old paper and pencil.

October 16, 2015 7:17 p.m.

Named_Tawyny says... #27

DemonDragonJ the rules committee made an official ruling on poison counters years ago: you need 10.

asasinater13 I don't understand how poison counters are any easier or more difficult to track than any other counter? You can keep track of anything the same way as poison counters. That they're vaguely similar to life is really a non-issue.

October 17, 2015 12:06 a.m.

iBleedPunk says... #28

If Experience Counters were a thing in Standard that means at least a decent sized proportion of the cards would deal with them. If it were this way it wouldn't be impossible to keep track of all the counters but there is still a possibility for discrepancies to occur if not watched vigilantly (which shouldn't be hard because paper and pen is the ultimate tracker)

This is my position

October 17, 2015 12:23 a.m.

asasinater13 says... #29

Named_Tawyny, poison counters are something that can be kept track of in the same location as the life total without causing significant confusion about which is which, while also being something an opponent knows will be needed to be tracked going into the game. experience counters are something opponents won't be ready to keep track of before a game, and will be potentially easy to miss when looking at a board state. It's unlikely to be a major theme of a block because I can't see it existing at common.

CChaos says... #30

I think we may see Liege reprints for the commander sets.

October 17, 2015 6:29 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #31

It's all just conjecture but it's an interesting mechanic nonetheless that reminds me of emblems because you can't really interact with counters on a player. Vampire Hexmage doesn't hit players haha.

October 17, 2015 7:05 a.m.

Named_Tawyny says... #32

asasinater13 you can track experience counters in the same place you track life as well; I don't understand why you think you couldn't.

Also, since it's going to be limited to EDH and Legacy, it'd be pretty easy to know when you have to track it - it's not like there will be a vast number of cards that use them. If you see one of (probably) five cards (not a lot to remember) you know you need to keep track.

October 17, 2015 8:08 a.m.

The thing I don't like about the experience counters is that they're basically untouchable (as of now), and I feel like that kind of effect should be reserved for emblems because of their sheer power. The card itself is decently interesting, but I would really prefer for the effect to be something along the lines of Skullbriar, the Walking Grave.

October 17, 2015 8:33 a.m. Edited.

asasinater13 says... #34

I was arguing against putting it in standard, not in commander. standard wants less complexity than commander has. they function differently than poison or life. It's a lot to keep track of for newer players that standard is supposed to appeal to. It's totally fine for more enfranchises/experienced players.

October 17, 2015 10:28 a.m.

Named_Tawyny says... #35

There was never a chance that it was ever going to be in standard.

October 17, 2015 10:51 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #36

I said it would be interesting if that kind of mechanic carried over.
