Modern Build-Around Cards
Modern Deck Help forum

So a friend of mine has recently become disillusioned with Modern, as it is apparently impossible to do well in a tournament setting with a homebrew (ignoring my modern deck which consistently goes 3-1 at FNM).
Being a brewer myself, I have found that one of the best ways to make a new deck is by looking through a set (preferably an old one) and finding cards which have potential in any format. While these decks may be fun to play (Mizzium Transreliquat) they are rarely competitively viable, bringing me to my point.
Are there any cards anyone would suggest that while powerful/flexible enough to build a reasonably competitive deck, is an unused card in modern in general so as to help my friend rekindle his faith in modern?
If it helps, my friend plays an infect list in modern and a Neheb, the Worthy EDH deck.
Thanks!
I have a Xathrid Necromancer deck that's fun and pretty solid http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/zombie-sisters-1/Linking isn't working

I have not showed up to a modern event with a net deck in about a year, I routinely go 3-1. I have even only showed up with the same deck twice in that span of time. There are lots of cool cards and homebrews that will work on modern. Some of my favorite build around cards are Greater Gargadon, Bridge from Below, Spirit of the Labyrinth, Haakon, Stromgald Scourge, Life from the Loam, Prismatic Omen, AND Squadron Hawks.

Some weird cards I think of to build around: no decks to reference just cards that have potential maybe somewhere

I have built a pretty successful decks based around blinking. Reality Acid is very cool when blinked and can rapid-fire away the opponents lands with Leonin Relic-Warder and Cloudshift.
Check out Azorious MORPHine trip and Budget Acid Trip.
Additionally, Delay, after the printing of Processors, became the best counterspell in Modern. Check out ProcEspers for more on that.

Check out Wacky Combos: Builder's Resource for some maybe-fun-maybe-jank build-arounds. They might not win, but they might be a starting place.

Polymorph is one of my favorite decks to play. basically you play stuff like Cloudform and cast Polymorph on it to instantly fetch an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn to the battlefield turn 4.

Zur the Enchanter... my favorite creature in the game for years. He seems difficult to build round but really he isn't.

Madcap Experiment + Platinum Angel can be quiet brutal.
It plays real nice with Pact of Negation, Glorious End & Earthquake
(Ending the turn exiles everything from the stack, spells, abilities - even ones that "cannot be countered")

I've been wanting to build around Auriok Salvagers for a long time. Obviously it would play some spellbombs (aether and nihil, unlikely any others) and engineered explosives, but I haven't found the right shell for it. I don't know if it would be his style, but it's the first card the came to mind.
