Important staples for Animar, Soul of Elements

Commander Deck Help forum

Hi.

At the Moment I am trying to build an Eldrazi Tribal commander with Animar, Soul of Elements in the lead.

I would like to get the most out of it since Eldrazis are quite expensive in mana.

So. Could you please tell me the important staples for Animar?

Don't concern yourself with Prices. I will decide for myself if a Card is too expensive for me to use.

If you are interested here is the deck btw: Why not Cthulhu?

It still Needs a lot of cutting. But I am always open for new suggestions to add.

people are going to have different opinions on staples. Not everything is as clear cut as Sol Ring. Nonetheless, I really think "staples" are going to be defined by what you plan on doing with the deck. Obviously you will want more large Eldrazi if you are not planning to win by combo and you will want a select few if you do plan to combo. For the most part if you just want to be the generic midrange Animar, Soul of Elements deck that so many people gravitate towards, then I'd simply recommend just running the titans. The rest of your creatures should compose of cards that support Animar gaining counters quickly - small bounce creatures (ex. Quickling), ETB value cards (ex. Wood Elves, Elvish Visionary), etc.

Have you taken a look at Animar at EDHRec.com?

Ancestral Statue and Cloudstone Curio are your only real "staples" because they both allow you to go infinite with Animar. Cloudstone lets you cast 2 eldrazi infinitely, exiling everything with Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger or something. Other than that, cards like Primordial Sage and Soul of the Harvest are OK for chaining eldrazi together, then cards like Hardened Scales/Doubling Season to put extra counters on Animar.

You have blue, so find a few spells with Proliferate or artifacts like Contagion Engine to aid in your commander's growth.

There are plenty of cards you will commonly see in animar lists. The big ones are definitely Cloudstone Curio and Ancestral Statue. Tidespout Tyrant can act as cloudstone #2

To pump animar, I love Shrieking Drake, Dream Stalker, and Man-o'-War to repeatedly bounce themselves and build up animar without dumping your whole hand onto the table. Animar is very susceptible to boardwipes, so be wary of unloading your hand and losing it all in one swing

Temur Sabertooth is amazing. He can get you infinite value out of your cast/etb triggers. Purphoros, God of the Forge I would also call a staple.

Cloud of Faeries, Peregrine Drake, Great Whale, and Palinchron. Run them. They're good regardless of their infinite combo potential.

I like to interact and slow opponents down, as my playgroup is extremely competitive. I love Duplicant and Phyrexian Ingester to go along with Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger and Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre.

Solid ramp options include Birds of Paradise, Bloom Tender, Lotus Cobra, Wood Elves, etc

I run a lot of tutors to find combo pieces, and there are a lot in these colors. More than I want to type on my phone. There's also a lot of draw card options. Eldrazi would go good with Temur Ascendancy

Lastly, one of my favorite wincons is Oblivion Sower. Bounce it infinitely with Cloudstone Curio and any other colorless creature or land-untapper (i.e. Cloud of Faeries) and exile all libraries lol

Anywho, enough from me for now. Please check out my Animar deck and tell me what you think! (LINK)

Deepglow Skate could be really fun. It could really jump start your animar +1/+1 tokens. I don't play a lot of Animar though so it might be a lot more "win-more"

From the AER set, I think that Greenbelt Rampager will be very useful in ETB decks.

Even if you don't turn the energy into tokens with another card, it yields three casts and etb triggers, and can be bounced by Faerie Impostor etc. for another three. Not a Shrieking Drake, but nice value.
