One of the problems, as I see it, with the Heroics mechanic when running as U/W is that you either have to go tall or wide. I have yet to find a deck that will allow both strategies to be win cons.

In my brewing, I came up with this deck. I put about 80 cards I'd like to see run in a U/W Heroic deck and whittled it down to the deck you see here. I've especially wanted to get Archetype of Courage to work in one of my decks, and I think that has finally been accomplished.

The deck offers the best of both worlds: going tall with Favored Hoplite or Battlewise Hoplite for the monster win, or wide with Brimaz, King of Oreskos, Phalanx Leader and Spear of Heliod. In either scenario, Archetype of Courage grants exclusive First Strike, allowing for very aggressive play.

On the protection side, we have Gods Willing, of course, but also Triton Tactics and Retraction Helix. Triton Tactics offers some great combat tricks, and lets you set up cool traps for opponents to attack into. Retraction Helix will take a big blocker out of the way on their end step (granted you have a non summoning-sick creature to tap), set them back a turn, and wipe out the counters, if you're lucky (and they don't have Bioshift). Gods Willing is also great tactically when used to push through damage at the beginning of your turn, or to block a life-linker and not allow them to gain life on that turn. Also included is Hidden Strings, an amazing board manipulator that rocks the heroic triggers.

For auras, I've focused on Aqueous Form and Ordeal of Thassa . Aqueous Form will win you the game, and Ordeal of Thassa provides that thing we love the most, card draw.

It's been my experience that the sideboard of a U/W heroic deck needs to primarily promote that which the deck does best: kill quickly. That being said, the sideboard includes modular components that modify the prime directive and don't entirely sway to far from it. Ajani's Presence offers indestructibility and triggers heroics. Mortal's Ardor and Ordeal of Heliod are sided in for races against other aggro decks to give us a life edge. Lagonna-Band Trailblazer is brought in against burn decks, as it is outside of Shock and Lightning Strike range, and one heroic trigger away from being out of Mizzium Mortars range. Swan Song is brought in against control decks.

The deck is solid for Standard after the rotation of RTR, at which point I expect a new pain land to be available to replace Hallowed Fountain . I'm sure I'll come up with something to replace Hidden Strings.

There are two other pieces that I would like to work in: Ajani, Caller of the Pride and/or Heliod, God of the Sun. I like the idea of bringing in Ajani, -3 him and winning the game. Heliod makes everyone vigilant, not just Brimaz and his cubs. The problem with both is this: what comes out? To pull one or two of most cards would reduce their pull percentage and possible weaken the deck's mojo, which has been scientifically calculated. I'll pull something or other out, add one or both and test it on MTGO.

I'm thinking about adding Ajani Steadfast , but don't want to lose too much just to include it. Advice on what would be good to remove to add it in is appreciated.

I encourage Heroic players (and all players) to playtest this deck. I've been having a very positive experience with this deck on MTGO. This deck has replaced Ass-Kickin' U/W Heroics as my primary FNM deck.
