Description

Creature-heavy meta? Just steal them to attack or sacrifice for gain!

Kari Zev's Expertise and Wrangle combined with beneficial sac effects in Yahenni, Undying Partisan, Altar's Reap, and Fatal Push allow you to not only steal your opponent's creatures to attack, but also give you the option of sacrificing you opponent's creatures for your own gain as well, if you don't want to give a dangerous threat back. Things hit epic blowout levels, especially in the aggro mirror, when you can chain an Expertise into Wrangle and completely flip the board.

In addition to the payoffs from eight creature-stealing cards, Ragavan dies every turn to turn on Fatal Push with Kari Zev, Skyship Raider in play, and Hanweir Garrison provides tokens every turn for Yahenni and Altar's Reap as well, if you aren't drawing the steal cards or your opponent doesn't have creatures out.

Against non-creature decks, mainly combo and control, Scrapheap Scrounger, Kari Zev, Skyship Raider, Hanweir Garrison, Lathnu Hellion, and Fleetwheel Cruiser go straight beatdown right up the mana curve, and the sideboard is mostly geared to swap in for the creature-stealing cards to remove combo/control threats.

Planning on testing it out in a couple weeks, and open to suggestions. The deck has a core that needs to remain for the interaction, but Glint-Sleeve Siphoner, Village Messenger, and Fleetwheel Cruiser are potential swaps.

Love the interaction of Kari Zev, Skyship Raider and Yahenni, Undying Partisan being able to sac the monkey over and over.

To be honest I hadn't even thought of that combo, I added Yahenni, Undying Partisan for the Kari Zev's Expertise and Wrangle, but that's an added bonus.

The monkey also turns on Fatal Push every turn, more fun realizations from play testing.

This is a hilarious idea for a deck (I mean that in a good way). I see that you have Defiant Salvager and Morbid Curiosity in the maybeboard. Curiosity seems better than Altar's Reap. Double black mana sucks, and it's sorcery, but I don't think that's a huge problem since you'll want to cast it on like turn five after a wrangle, and on your own turn. Indomitable Creativity is also a card to consider. On the unlikely chance that you can go expertise into wrangle then play the creativity for 5 mana, you'll basically win (and it'll be funny).

Other than that, Goblin Dark-Dwellers is a good card in general, but really sweet in this deck. And if it were me, I might throw one or two Noxious Gearhulk's in the sideboard. Thanks for the decklist, good luck at FNM's!

Hilarious and potentially very competitive. Morbid Curiosity definitely has a better effect than Altar's Reap, but you can play a Reap directly off Kari Zev's Expertise, so i went with it for now.

Solid suggestions in Goblin Dark-Dwellers and Noxious Gearhulk for the maybeboard, but possibly too expensive cmc.

I really like this deck! I'm a newer player but I am going to build this. Can I ask why not 4x Scrapheap Scrounger instead of the glint sleeve? and why not 4x smoldering marsh and pull 1 of each basic?

Stephencliffe says... #7

archfield1 yeah, dark-dwellers and noxious do have high cmc's. I would still make the petition for dark-dwellers though, it does a lot of great things in this deck. The choice is yours of course, but think about it. Maybe if you proxy it up and play with it, you'll change your mind.

Not trying to tell you how to build your deck, but I've changed my mind many times after a few playtests with cards I hadn't really considered.

Stephen, I'm going to remove the Village Messengers. I just don't think they are that good. I was thinking of adding 1 each of Yahenni and Kari, and then 2 goblin dark dwellers

That sounds pretty good. Leaves you with no turn one plays, but this is more midrange than agro, so yeah, that seems good. Thanks for letting me know, I'd love to see where this deck goes and how it transforms. It's a sweet list.

Scrapheap Scrounger is definitely in consideration as a swap for Village Messenger  Flip, but as mentioned the Messenger provides a turn one play, and is surprisingly good especially on the play, having recently seen it in action.

Smoldering Marsh helps fix the mana but I've been burned by running the full four, you don't want two in your opening hand or it's a mulligan.

Yo whats up. I switched out 4x Village Messenger  Flip for 4x Bomat Courier. Then i changed out x2 Fatal Push for x2 Unlicensed Disintegration. What do you think about this change? I am looking to plot in just a few more artifacts so i can keep using Unlicensed Disintegration at it's biggest potential. Overall i am a huge fan of Unlicensed Disintegration so i really want to make it fit.

I've played around a little bit with Kari Zev's Expertise before and lemme tell you it does wonders with Invigorated Rampage, especially vs heavier decks (although this deck is a little tight and inv rampage is more of a finisher than a synergistic piece).Otherwise this is hands down the best built steal->sac deck I've seen! Well balanced and thought out, and most of all - looks fun as hell! I would like to know how you sideboard Lost Legacy, Transgress and Skysovereign. Also could you give me some feedback on Hanweir Garrison's performance. I would like to use it in a deck of mine but I'm not sure how it will fair out.

Bomat Courier is a solid suggestion and a 1-drop I forgot about, it may be an upgrade over Village Messenger  Flip after some live testing.

Thanks Mokan, and Lost Legacy is in the board specifically for Copy Cat to pull Saheeli out of the deck, Transgress the Mind is great against threats like Fumigate and Unlicensed Disintegration in decks like this one that can only interact on the board, and Skysovereign, Consul Flagship is there to go over the top of board stalls (Servo decks, BG Constrictor, etc).

I have not played with Hanweir Garrison yet, but I have played against it more than once, and it's a card that has to be dealt with before it floods the board or merges with Hanweir Battlements. It's very effective now with Kari Zev, Skyship Raider in play, you attack with 5 creatures for the price of only casting 2.

I tested it out today playing against my father with Mardu Ballista. Soon I'll test against U/R Dynavolt and G/B Counters. This deck is strong and a lot of fun! Hanweir Garrison is awesome as arch said, also the fact that the tokens aren't banished at the end step is really good imo. I was thinking about Unlicensed Disentigration but there just really aren't any artifacts to power it. I took out 2 Fleetwheel Cruiser 4 Glint-Sleeve Siphoner and 4 Village Messenger. The cruisers are nice, but I feel like you need more land, running 22 I seem to come up short more often than I want too. I added 1 more each of Yahenni and Kari Zev, those are cards you want to see. I get not running 4 because they are legendary but 3 each makes it so you can count on seeing at least one or the other if not both each game. I also added the 2 Smoldering Marsh for 24 lands total and 2 Goblin Dark-Dwellers and 4 Scrapheap Scrounger in place of the Glint Sleeves. Glint Sleeve dies so easily I just never get to use his card draw effect. He eats either Fatal Push or one ping from Walking Ballista and Scrapheap is more aggro-esk and is harder to deal with. Goblin Dark Dweller is my MVP turn 5, play him with expertise in the grave and wrangle in your hand is so, so good.

Consider swapping out the Fleetwheel Cruisers for a pair of Aethersphere Harvester. The extra energy goes a long way to power the card draw from Glint-Sleeve Siphoner and it can be piloted by anything. The extra life that gives back can go a long way too. I absolutely love those two cards paired together.

March 13, 2017 10:04 p.m.

archfield1 says... #19

Good thoughts on Aethersphere Harvester too, I have Skysovereign, Consul Flagship in the board to go over the top when needed but worried about the cost a little.

Aethersphere Harvester for Fleetwheel Cruiser and Scrapheap Scrounger for Glint-Sleeve Siphoner are the first two I will probably keep in mind after tournament play.

Keep Glint-Sleeve Siphoner. That card is ridiculously good.

March 14, 2017 6:16 p.m.

For a top of the curve card, Eldrazi Obligator, beats them all. He is a 3/1 body with haste that has a kicker to Act of Treason, yes please!

April 3, 2017 1:49 a.m.

I was running a similar deck with Kari Zev as a mono red deck wins, until I saw your combo with Yahenni and now I'm splashing black.

After playing it for three weeks now, I've had a couple realizations:

1) 4x Wrangle and 4x Kari Zev's Expertise sounds fun, but's it's just too many creature-stealing spells. I've had too many hands with 2-3 of them and not enough creatures to steal.

2) I'm struggling to find a good 4-drop finisher in red and black right now. Fleetwheel Cruiser is nice the turn it comes down, but after that you have to give up another attaching creature just to swing with it. Tried Skyship Stalker as well but it's just too expensive at 5 mana for a 3/3 flying haste.

Updates:

-4 Wrangle, +4 Unlicensed Disintegration

-2 Fleetwheel Cruiser, +4 Skysovereign, Consul Flagship

-3 Altar's Reap, +3 Bomat Courier (still gives me card draw, but also adds more damage and helps fuel Disintegration.
