Hi everybody and welcome to my new attempt to build a semicompetitive budget deck.
Reading SaffronOlive's last article (https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/brewer-s-minute-seven-hour-of-devastation-combos-for-modern), my attention was caught by the combo involving Intruder Alarm and
Steward of Solidarity
, so i decided to brew my first combo deck (i've always been a sort of Timmy player).
The combo
The combo obviusly consists in exerting
Steward of Solidarity
in order to trigger Intruder Alert!, untap the Steward and repeat to infinity and beyond. If you are able to combo off, you can win by milling your opponent with Altar of the Brood or simply beating him/her with an army of token.
Cards' choice
Since our combo is our only win con, we absolutely want to find the combo's pieces. serum vision and
Sleight of Hand
help us digging through the library; Thraben Inspector is like an overpriced
Steward of Solidarity
and Drift of Phantasms is a tutor for Intruder Alarm and sometimes a blocker. Since our combo creatures (and to a lesser extent also Intruder Alarm) are susceptible to removal and we have no hand disruption (i miss you, Black), Brave the Elements and Spell Pierce are played mainboard to protect them. A split of Path to Exile and Condemn help us keep the board cleared by menaces, while Echoing Thruth is a catch all option which can be used to bounce creatures, PW, artifact or enchantment (such as a Ghostly Prison or an Ensnaring Bridge that keep us from killing the opponent).
Sideboard
Well, current sideboard is very generic and abuse white's propension to hatred. Only uncommon choice is Authority of the Consul, to keep aggro and go wide decks at bay. By the way, i am always open to suggestions.
Final Thoughts
I like this idea and, with low interaction, the deck can consistently combo off on turn 4, sometimes on turn 3. The problem is that it suffers from the lacking of a plan-B, weakness exploited by most black deck through the use of hand disruption and spotted removal. I need help mostly in this sense, since i have little to no experience with combo strategy and don't know how to improve it.
Random notes
Since we are going for infinite damage or endless mill, Condemn is probably better than Path to Exile in this build: we don't care about oppo's life points (unless we are against Death Shadow).
Being both Intruder Alarm's and Altar of the Brood's triggered ability, they are not affected by Pithing Needle, Harsh Mentor or Phyrexian Revoker. Those cards can still slow us down targeting our token' s generators.
