Sideboard Update #2 —Feb. 13, 2017

After discussion and thinking, I have updated the sideboard in an attempt to play against various strategies.

Molten Rain and Crumble to Dust are here against Tron, Scapeshift and other land-focused decks; Ratchet Bomb and Pyroclasm against tokens and potentially Infect; Smash to Smithereens intended against Affinity; Tormod's Crypt against Dredge and graveyard-focused strategies; Dragon's Claw an attempt to fight against burn; and lastly Lightning Bolt for spot removal and do some burning ourselves.

A few questions... Why are you side boarding 2x Atog? Also, I feel the sideboard needs to be more diversified. What about some enchantment removal? The sideboard has a lot of power, but many of those cards could be main-boarded.

@AkoumFirebird Cheers for the upvote! Yeah, I'm thinking the same but not entirely sure how to change/spice up the sideboard.

The Atog's are there incase there's a lot of named-creature-removal in someone's deck, but I'd happy to part with them if necessary.

I don't know about enchantment or artifact removal, any suggestions? Was also thinking perhaps something like Molten Rain against Tron and multi-coloured decks? I'm not clued up well in the Modern format, see!

For artifact and enchantment removal, I might suggest Smash to Smithereens or Echoing Ruin. For enchantments, I have no idea ;) But affinity is a thing, not bestow ;) So I think it is ok if there is no enchantment removal.

For other sideboard cards, Rending Volley is always good ;) Also, Pithing Needle can stop a lot of combos.

@AkoumFirebird Fantastic, I think then I'll remove the 2 Atog and 4 Galvanic Blast for 3 Smash to Smithereens and 3 Molten Rain - I need to get ahead against other artifact decks coughcough affinity coughcough, and other multi-coloured decks coughcough tron coughcough.

Rending Volley and Pithing Needle do seem good, but Volley seems very specific, and Needle seems potentially too expensive regarding the budget. Thoughts? I appreciate the help!

I feel like a Card that could help Faithless Looting just to help dig for the pieces you need.Shrapnel Blast could possibly find a fit.

February 12, 2017 8:25 p.m.

@Deltacobra Thanks for the comment!

Yeah, Faithless Looting seems awesome not only for digging, but also dumping artifacts for Slag Fiend if necesssary. I'm not sure about Shrapnel Blast - it does trigger Pia's Revolution so could be cool, but I'm not sure where I'd fit either cards to be honest.

Maybe I'd go down a Foundry Inspector, but the Inspector really helps crack and loop the Implements, which makes really useful card draw and Revolution triggers. Thoughts on what I could go down? Much appreciated!

Considering the only flying creature you control has no power, it might be good for the sideboard if you had Roast. Also, you might want to run Scouring Sands to deal with 1/1 tokens. It seems like this deck could get beat by go-around strategies. Also, Skullcrack is good against lifegain, even though there is not much lifegain in the format ;) I would still run 1-2 of tehm though in the sideboard.

I'd honestly don't like Slag Fiend if there no artifacts in your graveyard it useless. I'd just play more zero costing artifacts like Accorder's Shield , Bone Saw , Kite Shield, Paradise Mantle to name a few.

deltacobra says... #10

U really wouldn't want to throw your artifacts away since sacking them is your bread and butter.

February 12, 2017 8:42 p.m.

@AkoumFirebird

Hmmm, I've mixed opinions on Roast - doing 5 damage for 2 is awesome, but I'm not sure if it's worth a space in the board where removal like Lightning Bolt and Soul's Fire exists.

Scouring Sands seems pretty legit, at the very least scrying 1 helps with draws.

Skullcrack, I'm not sure again - I think that's very meta dependent. But then again, with Aetherflux Reservoir floating about in Standard, maybe the lifegain style of deck will leak into Modern? - I don't know!

Finding space is an issue. I've put Reckless Fireweaver in to encourage Pia's Revolution to deal damage to face and fill the graveyard with artifacts, but I'm not sure if it's necessary - I just really like the interaction.

Thoughts on what I could go down? Thanks once again!

I would just cut Foundry Inspector your artifacts are costing u nothing now so why cast a 3 costing artifact that doesn't do anything for you.

Id run 4 Atog as well him and his brother will be your main win con. U pump them by sacking all the free artifacts and chances are someone with try to Path to Exile your guy than in response you Fling that little guy over the board lol

February 12, 2017 8:53 p.m.

@deltacobra

I appreciate that, although I really like the surprise of Slag Fiend. Pia's Revolution will be a target, and whilst I agree that adding more 0-cost artifacts would add to the aggressive nature of the deck, I think having somewhat of an alternative win-con, rather than just going flat-out Atog does help with the deck's flexibility.

Similarly, if I can't get a Revolution on the field, I have no way to get the artifacts back from the graveyard. Slag Fiend provides an interesting opportunity to utilise artifacts that Atog and Ravenous Intruder have already used to pump up the 1 mana monster.

The Foundry Inspector also help reduce the cost of Bomat Courier and Implement of Combustion, helping card draw which otherwise the deck lacks in. Reducing the cost also helps to loot them with an Atog and Pia's Revolution in play, for example.

Perhaps I could go down the amount of copies of the Fiend in place of Faithless Looting, as you've suggested?

I'm really enjoying the conversation and suggestions, you guys are awesome! Feel free to +1 if you like too :)

Cathartic Reunion is also another great way to dig.

February 12, 2017 9 p.m.

@deltacobra

I agree and considered either Cathartic Reunion or Tormenting Voice, but this deck often floods the board with 0-drops at turn 1, drawing without having to discard to begin with seems better - hence the Implement of Combustion.

U have a another win con tho if your pump your guy you can swing it in or fling him which straight to the face. Lol

February 12, 2017 9:08 p.m.

deltacobra says... #18

True but chances are they aren't gonna allow that to cycle tho still does a good job at drawing cards tho.

What about Magmatic Insight?

February 12, 2017 9:14 p.m.

@deltacobra

Hmmm, Magmatic Insight is interesting, but is kinda like a more specific Tormenting Voice that doesn't allow me to dump artifacts in the graveyard if I don't have a Pia's Revolution or Atog out but I do have a Slag Fiend ready. I'm not convinced, but thanks!

February 12, 2017 9:21 p.m.

deltacobra says... #21

Yea Faithless Looting is the best one but throwing artifacts to slag fiend seems painful since u want them for Atog and his brother.

February 12, 2017 9:31 p.m.

@deltacobra

Once again, I agree, but say both Atog and Ravenous Intruder get hit by a Lost Legacy or a card like it - then I have little chance of winning.

I'm not denying the deck isn't aggressive, and that Atog and Ravenous Intruder aren't the main plan, but Slag Fiend, much like Chimeric Mass, add flexibility to the deck if it does go heads up.

I think this flexibility is really useful, but perhaps my opinion outweighs the potential of the deck? Maybe that's a conversation for another day!

February 12, 2017 9:39 p.m.

deltacobra says... #23

I feel the deck is going 2 directions if I was Gonna do things with Slag Fiend I'd use cards like Pyrite Spellbomb, Assault Strobe and Salvage Titan is also interesting.
