Mardu Control

Modern RBW (Mardu)

Ocara

Sideboard

After playing Jeskai Control and Blue White Control for over a year, I wanted to build a control deck that was Mardu colors. Plenty of removal spells and disruption to run your opponent out of resources, and then finish them off with Gurmag Angler or a lot of spirit tokens. Plague Engineer is just an overall great creature in a lot of match ups to pick off a lot of 1 toughness creatures, and can trade with a larger creature if it needs to and later be brought back with Kolaghan's Command . Seasoned Pyromancer is to help filter away cards that are bad in certain match ups as well as make blockers or attackers, depending on the situation. Liliana of the Veil is great for disrupting your opponents hand as well as discarding your Lingering Souls or making your Gurmag Angler easier to cast. Lingering Souls is great for making blockers in some match ups but also creating a lot of attackers in other match ups. Liliana, the Last Hope is a great threat that can pick off small creatures or bring them down to zero power to make them bad attackers. She can also bring back a Plague Engineer that blocked earlier, and she is also a win condition herself with an ultimate that will almost always just win the game. Blood Moon is in the deck as an insurance against decks like Tron, Titanshift, or Amulet Titan. It also has merit against other decks with few basic lands, such as humans.

The sideboard should be pretty self explanatory, with the exception of Gideon, Ally of Zendikar and Hazoret the Fervent . Against decks that will likely bring in Rest in Peace , it's a good plan to take out the 2 Gurmag Angler and 2 Lingering Souls and bring in the Gideons and Hazorets. Gideon, Ally of Zendikar is also great in any other grindy match up, as it is a creature factory that can also swing for large amounts itself or anthem your creatures to possibly win games on the spot. Hazoret the Fervent is great against decks that lack ways to exile it, but it's also really good against decks that have ensnaring bridge but no way to close out the game quickly. While you're trying to find one of the many answers to bridge in the deck you can keep pressuring their life total by using her ability to keep shocking them every turn.
