Liege of the Hollows

Creature — Spirit

When Liege of the Hollows is put into a graveyard from play, each player may pay any amount of mana. Then each player puts into play a number of 1/1 green Squirrel creature tokens equal to the amount of mana he or she paid this way.

Liege of the Hollows Discussion

Neat deck, UG isn't my strong suit so i don't have any advice but any deck that runs Liege of the Hollows gets a +1 from me.

Hey, love these styles of decks! The Hunted cards are neat, and actually playable without gathering much fear in these, you just need to combo them with an immediate sacrifice, something like Ashnod's Altar. Other great cards to give the whole table a boost that combo well with Ashnod's are Tempting Wurm, Liege of the Hollows and Veteran Explorer. Ghirapur Orrery helps blast out the lands and prevents needing to top deck quite as much, and Hypergenesis can be loads of fun too. Hope some of these catch your interest!

Mitotic Slime comes to mind. Reef Worm is sorta like that, but in the wrong colors. Abzan Ascendancy/Golgari Germination/Gutter Grime/Requiem Angel are sorta close, Belfry Spirit turns the creature it haunts into a card like that, Brindle Shoat, Tuktuk the Explorer and Doomed Dissenter just get bigger. Liege of the Hollows gives everyone squirrels when it dies. Symbiotic Elf, Symbiotic Beast, and Symbiotic Wurm turn into insects. Chasm Skulker explodes into a pile of squid (wrong colors again tho). Maalfeld Twins breaks apart into 2 zombies, and Mausoleum Guard into 2 spirits. Promise of Bunrei makes one of your dudes explode into spirits. Sporogenesis is kind of a cool card that makes your guys explode into saprolings on death. Sprouting Thrinax is good. Wurmcoil Engine is a popular one.Goblin Marshal/Mogg War Marshal makes goblins when he ETBs and dies. Hallowed Spiritkeeper, Hangarback Walker, and Hooded Hydra all work. Jotun Owl Keeper in blue again. Mongrel Pack is another one, as is Murder Investigation. Theres a whole bunch of "Penumbra" cards from odyssey that all make a black clone of themselves when they die (e.g Penumbra Wurm). Ulvenwald Mysteries turns each dead guy into a clue that it then turns into a soldier.

If I were to make a commander deck around this idea, I would go with a Jund, not Abzan, sacrifice deck led by Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper, or perhaps Shattergang Brothers. In addition to these you have a ton of guys that just make 1 token on death- Seed Guardian, Sifter of Skulls, Pawn of Ulamog, Tukatongue Thallid, Blisterpod, Myr Sire, etc.

Squall Line may be a better use of the slot then Hurricane

you say squirrels, but it seems Deranged Hermit is the only producer? seems like mostly green token fun (Second Harvest?)

no Nut Collector, Squirrel Nest, Liege of the Hollows, Acorn Catapult, Druid's Call, Acorn Harvest, Squirrel Mob, Krosan Beast or Chatter of the Squirrel ??

Earthcraft+Squirrel Nest and Druid's Call+Acorn Catapult are especially fun.

Okay, so I do realize you ask for possible cuts, but I've honestly got too many things to list option-wise to say where a cut could/should be made. Some examples of options you may have missed:

Weird Harvest, Mana Flare, Dictate of Karametra, Howling Mine, Heartwood Storyteller, Shizuko, Caller of Autumn, Skullwinder, Horn of Greed, Helm of Awakening, Spectral Searchlight, Primal Vigor, Seed the Land, Bubble Matrix, Flux, Beacon of Immortality, Dawnbreak Reclaimer, Liege of the Hollows, Ghosts of the Innocent, Pulsemage Advocate, Orzhov Advokist, Wishmonger, Tangleroot. Storm Cauldron, Grove of the Burnwillows, Mikokoro, Center of the Sea, Geier Reach Sanitarium, Arbiter of Knollridge, Dakra Mystic, Concordant Crossroads, and

(my last two to mention that I cannot believe YOU don't even mention them how could you possibly have missed these and I'm metaphorically running out of air here)

Phelddagrif and Questing Phelddagrif.

BREATHES

whew. Okay, firstly I do not do "tldr" summaries, so I'm afraid you'll have to sift through the above the slow way (which that isn' even an exhaustive list btw).

Secondly, to help you sift through the above I would ask is there a specific manner in which you are wanting to help people? Do you like seeing certain gameplans win or hate others? By example is that I can see some cards like Hive Mind being too helpful possibly towards "storm" decks, but if you're playing a catch-all type of group hug then that's no big deal.

Another idea is are you into fringe group hug effects? By which I mean playing Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth just to help everyone mana fix that uses black. Or even playing Ink-Treader Nephilim in tandem with say Tempt with Reflections to give everybody an extra copy of literally every creature on their board and them some. Heck, if you ran Rite of Replication you could let everyone have EVERY creature on the board. The nephilim isn't directly a group hug card here but it has the potential to hug. Kinda like Guided Passage no?

Just some food for thought. ;D

There sadly aren't more squirrels that is worth using. Cards like Liege of the Hollows, Nantuko Shrine and Acorn Catapult simply doesn't cut it, I dont' want my opponents to be the ones with my mighty squirrels! And then there is Krosan Beast, but he sadly worn't last long and it does take time to build up the threshold.

Squirrels are a thing some of use worked to develop way back when...

While Earthcraft is banned, the infinite squirrel loop works with Arbor Elf, Squirrel Nest, and Intruder Alarm. Concordant Crossroads makes the combo an instant win (unless you get Fogged or something).

I liked to play mono-green squirrels.

Turn 1
Forest, Arbor Elf (Though, back then, I had to use Llanowar Elves.)

Turn 2
Forest, Wild Growth (Though now, Utopia Sprawl is strictly better.), Chatter of the Squirrel using flashback to get a total of two squirrel tokens (but if you are using Arbor Elf, you could also get away with casting Acorn Harvest on turn 2.) Note: Parallel Lives is also a good turn-2 play if you have Arbor Elf. Garruk Wildspeaker works well, too, especially if you are holding Chatter of the Squirrel.

Turn 3
Forest (Provided you are using Llanowar Elves; with Arbor Elf, you are already set.), Deranged Hermit. You now have six 2/2 viscous, nasty green squirrel tokens. If the two which came out last turn can attack without getting killed, go for the throat.

Turn 4
Let Deranged Hermit's echo cost send him to the graveyard. Then cast Coat of Arms. You now have six 6/6 satanic green squirrel tokens ready to send your opponent to Heck. Alternately, without Coat of Arms but with Garruk Wildspeaker at 4 loyalty, you can pay the echo cost and used Garruk Wildspeaker's overrun ultimate.

Squirrel Mob also helps here, and Adaptive Automaton can be used as a squirrel lord as well. Swarmyard is pretty cool, too, and if you have Gaea's Cradle, things can get crazy in a hurry. (I wish I had Gaea's Cradle...L.O.L.

A basic squirrel deck goes like this:

4x Arbor Elf
4x Utopia Sprawl or Wild Growth
4x Chatter of the Squirrel
4x Acorn Harvest
4x Squirrel Mob
4x Deranged Hermit
4x Coat of Arms
4x Echoing Courage
4x Squirrel Nest
22x Forest
2x Swarmyard

Squirrel Nest should really be a sideboard card because it is actually fairly slow, but you can work out your own deal. Squirrel decks are fun!

While some people really like Acorn Catapult for some reason, the card is rubbish. Nut Collector is really slow. I personally have never liked Liege of the Hollows, but I might like it better if I had Gaea's Cradle. I never manged to figure out how to get Krosan Beast to work properly.

That leaves Squirrel Wrangler, which can be a pretty good card in the right deck, though I usually leave it out.

No data for this card yet.
