Vaevictis Asmadi, Retro Elder Dragon Highlander

Commander / EDH BRG (Jund)

Mugenhunt

Maybeboard

"What if I made an EDH deck back at the very beginnings of the format in 1996?"

The idea is to make a deck that plausibly could have been competitive back in 1996, with an actual Elder Dragon from Legends as the Commander (Vaevictis Asmadi). The deck thus can only use cards from Revised, Arabian Nights, Antiquities, Legends, The Dark, Fallen Empires, Fourth Edition, Ice Age, Chronicles, Homelands and Alliances. (Which covers the era I used to play MTG before leaving the game and only returning to it many years later.) The majority of the cards should be prior to Fourth Edition.

The gag is that I say "Man, this Commander thing is just like the Elder Dragon Highlander I used to play back in the day! I brought my old deck!" and hilarity ensues as my deck uses old cards that are weird and strange by modern standards, full of color-pie breaks and odd effects.

I don't want to drop hundreds of dollars on the really powerful old-school cards needed to genuinely make this a winning deck, but I need it to be a bit more effective so that I'm not making the game less fun for everyone by playing it. Also, I'd prefer not to just immediately lose. I'm willing to spend some cash for this, but probably not going to buy a dual land or any other really powerful but absurdly expensive card.

What do I need?

  • Other quirky and weird cards from early Magic sets that would shake things up and make people smile.
  • More effective cards from early Magic sets that will make this deck not immediately lose.
  • Cool tactics using obscure cards from early Magic sets.
  • A decent strategy beyond last long enough to have the mana to pump your dragon up really big.
