Creature (1)

"The Voldaren have begun demanding blood offerings from villagers in their territory. Their agents arrive from the sky to collect the ceremonial bowls in eerie silence."

~

Elevated in stature by noble blood, vampires dwell in luxuriant cliffside estates just out of reach of the sun and carry on in an endless daze of macabre revelry. No human is ever safe in a region where vampires settle, especially under the chilling cover of dark when they seek an unsuspecting victim to feed on. From their vaunted positions in assorted vampiric courts, these haughty and self-indulgent creatures deign to rule over the surrounding mortal populations and expand their influence. Hidden beneath their trappings of graceful finery however, vampires are commonly at each other's throats and warring with members of rival bloodlines with violent theatricality. An undercurrent of bloodthirst courses through their ageless veins, and at times their hunger for vengeance outweighs even their hunger for blood.

While all vampires are connoisseurs, none can quite rival the exquisiteness of the debonair bon vivant Florian Voldaren. A nonpareil of high society and patrician of one of the mightiest vampire families, his galas have been known to leave even the most fearsome of vampires dying to attend. Florian now prepares a sumptuous banquet not of rare epicurean delights, but instead the luscious blood of his victims.

Have A Ball:

  1. Unleash bloodcrazed Vampires with the unique “Madness” mechanic. Cards with this mechanic (Bloodhall Priest, Distemper of the Blood, etc.) can be played rapidly and unexpectedly with reduced cost as they’re being discarded. Many cards allow you to discard in order to activate their effects (Anje Falkenrath, Tormenting Voice, etc.) which gives you an outlet for cards with Madness. Use Falkenrath Gorger to give all the vampires in your hand Madness and really get the blood flowing.

  2. Florian, Voldaren Scion has an effect that triggers by dealing damage, and the cheapest way to do this while also keeping your mana available to cast cards after is through combat damage-- so attack often! Vermin Gorger can also freely damage opponents without wasting mana in exchange for sacrificing a creature. Even if you don't have much (or any) mana available, Florian's effect can help make sure you're playing a land each turn and possibly even cast some of the deck's lower-mana creatures like Voldaren Epicure or Olivia's Bloodsworn.

  3. Vampires specialize in strengthening themselves and others. Among others, Thirsting Bloodlord gives a static boosts simply by being on the field, and other vampires (Bloodtracker, Markov Dreadknight, etc.) are able to power themselves up for a cost. Be aggressive, because some vampires often get stronger after getting a taste of blood; Cards like Heirs of Stromkirk and Markov Blademaster become bigger and badder threats the more combat damage they deal, with Rakish Heir and Stensia Masquerade bestowing this vicious effect to your entire field.

  4. Blood tokens and the cards that create them (Restless Bloodseeker  , Vampires' Vengeance, etc.) allow for easier and more flexible activation of your cards with Madness. Blood tokens are also versatile and can be used for a variety of different purposes. The most notable outlets are Strefan, Maurer Progenitor (who can summon other vampires in exchange for blood tokens) and Bloodbat Summoner   (who can transform your blood tokens into hard-to-block bats). Arterial Alchemy provides a showstopping coup de grâce by allowing your vampires to equip blood tokens for augmented attack power.

  5. Invite opposing creatures to fight on your side with cards like New Blood and Olivia Voldaren. This can not only be used to recruit strong creatures but also to remove linchpins from an opponent's field to dismantle their strategy. The effects belonging to these two cards even turn the affected creatures into vampires themselves, allowing them to function seamlessly with other the cards in your deck.

Sub-Commander Option

Anje, Maid of Dishonor: For most vampires, unlife is a frenetic blur of bloodlust and sadism, but Anje Falkenrath finds herself forced to be on her best behavior as she broodily sits on the sidelines of Innistrad’s most killer vampire wedding.

With Anje as your commander, the deck leans more heavily into the Madness mechanic. Florian’s strategy of conserving mana until the second main phase is completely absent, and there is less pressure on doling out combat damage. Resource management with Anje focuses instead on Blood tokens: spending mana on them at opportune times to trigger Madness or replace unwanted cards in your hand. Whereas Florian’s rather passive and inconspicuous ability may allow him some additional survivability, Anje presents a more obvious threat and may find herself a more common target for removal.

Part of a 5-way Innistrad Pentagram/ Commander series:

1) Leinore’s Witching Hour- Humans assemble to outlive opponents, escalating in formability and bolstering their ranks.

2) Saint Traft's Lost Army- Spirits and Angels attack effortlessly from above to slowly grind opponents to the bone.

3) Wilhelt's Graveyard Smash- Zombies rise from the grave to overwhelm opponents, entirely overrunning the field.

4) Florian's Sanguine Soiree- Vampires strengthen themselves and swarm the field to strike opponents when they're vulnerable.

5) Tovolar's Full Moon Slaughter- Werewolves transform to butcher opponents and curse them to manipulate the state of the game.
