SACRIFICE ONION

Perfect Strategy against Proactive decks:

Card Descriptions:

  • Boomerang : A pretty straight-forward card, mostly used aggressively in Turn 2 or 3 to return a land the opponent controls. In the mid to late game this can erase a blocker, allowing the squid to score a hit. And well, this can kill tokens, so I'll take it. An alternative is Echoing Truth but I prefer the ability to hit lands early in the game. Void Snare is also a suitable alternative, although it works at sorcery speed only.
  • Brainstorm : Combo enabler. An early Brainstorm can allow a precise use of Temporal Mastery or the land drop you need to cast a squid. Against a discard deck or mill deck, Brainstorm can help to hide some relevant cards. Used in combination with the Scry 1 from Thassa this card is useful at cleaning an overburdened hand.
  • Cephalid Constable : The soul of the deck. Has a funny mechanic that had me intrigued for a couple of years, and now that the conditions are adequate, it became a deck. Combined with proper control ( Counterspell ) and some simple* evasion ( Wings of Velis Vel ) this thing will cripple your opponent. Most likely this will make him/her concede when his/her side of the board is empty.
  • Counterspell : Am I really supposed to explain this card? Well, needless to say that using this with Isochron Scepter is mostly cruel. In a budget environment this can be changed for Mana Leak .
  • Gitaxian Probe : A cantrip that allows a glance at your opponent's hand. What's wrong with that? Let me tell you... nothing
  • Halimar Depths : The extra land, which in this case acts as a bad Brainstorm. An alternative is roaring seacliff to give evasion to one of the critical creatures. Not impressive but when you got nothing else to do...
  • Isochron Scepter : The essence of "motherfu..." said by your opponent. The obvious choice to imprint is Counterspell, but a Wings of Velis Vel could be a fine strategic choice in this deck.
  • Jhessian Thief : The support creature that will net some cards to maintain tempo. Has to be used with care when planning the Miracles. This and Thassa, God of the Sea guarantees a steady card input. This slot was originally occupied by Surrakar Spellblade , but its fragility was a deal breaker. Also the need of casting spells after he hits the table lowers his overall utility.
  • Spectral Flight : A +2/+2 and Flight for just means, in this scenario, that the Cephalid Constable will be attacking as early as Turn 4 for 3 permanents, and that the Thief will have better odds of dealing combat damage, thus drawing a card. This card allows synergy with Wings of Velis Vel , thus hitting for 7.
  • Temporal Mastery : Just one for for flavor, and to use the ever open that defines a Blue control deck. Used in combination with Brainstorm, this is just mean. One extra turn could be enough to set the board and pave the road to a shameful defeat, and sweet victory for you.
  • Thassa, God of the Sea : Oh-my-god! Repeatable unblockability stapled to a potential 5/5 indestructible Think Tank ? Yes, I'll take it. Two squids and her will make the full pack, or one squid, one Thief and one Sprectral Flight will net a devotion of 5 .
  • Vapor Snag : Useful for spot removal and pinging. Every. Single. Damage point. Counts.
  • Wings of Velis Vel : The last card that inspired the deck. What is not to love from a card that turns a small and relatively harmless 1/1 squid into a 4/4 with flying Eldrazi Goat Ally Squid that returns permanents when it hits? 4/4 for just 2 mana is broken.

The one card I might suggest adding is Halimar Depths It does enter tapped, but when you don't have a one drop on your first turn, it is essentially a 0 drop that allows you to scry three.

On second thought, the deck would also very much appreciate a Archmage Ascension it takes a while to set up, but once you do, and especially in a control deck like this one, it gives a free deck search each turn. It then also allows you to shuffle, meaning that you gain a card from ANYWHERE in your library, and then allows you to shuffle. One more thing is that this occurs whenever you draw, not just once each turn. However, if you do this, you would probably want to replace Brainstorm with Ponder as abby315 suggested in order to gain some of that extra activation for this ability.

Overall, it's a very solid deck. I love the idea, and I will definitely upvote.

Oops. my mistake, I didn't see the Halimar Depths that was already there, I would recommend adding some more though.

With the aforementioned combo, and if you were willing to splash black, you could replace Wings of Velis Vel with a Warped Physique , allowing you to bump even more of their minions.

I would like an onion sacrifice please, I have provided my +1.

so, is this deck competitive? All the horror stories I've heard about legacy decks leads me to believe this is too budget to be true; Other than that however, I love this deck.

Cold-Eyed Selkie instead of Jhessian Thief, same mana price in a mono-blue deck. You can pump her up for great card draw.

Thawing Glaciers could be a way to shuffle that is relatively budget compared to the other fetchlands and is repeatable.

An onion for Dylls!! Lol

  • abby315: Hi! Thanks for commenting. For starters, you are right, I should be able to shuffle somehow; I'm working on that now, avoiding the fetches because of PRICE issues hahah.
On the other side, Ponder ain't strictly better, as Brainstorm allows me to cast a well timed Temporal Mastery. You can replace it though, to go into Modern, as I think the only Legacy card here is Brainstorm.
In the meanwhile, I'll see what can be done with the shuffling. Thanks for that ;)

5 lands in 5th turn, when u play 20 lands in deck? Sure. Impossible.

  • Kiivuhl: Brainstorm helps. Gitaxian Probe helps too. Starting with 2 or 3 lands in you hand helps too.
And that is the Perfect Strategy, not the standard. Being a control deck, this doesn't have a problem holding a couple of turns with just 2 or 3 lands: god bless Counterspell and Boomerang.
    Cheers

I know about brainstorm, but still... its not so much.

August 29, 2016 6:46 p.m.

Mostly, it's a good way to get miracle cards back out of your hand so that they can be used. Turn 1 brainstorm into turn 2 temporal mastery could be a pretty decent option, I think. If you're merely trying to get a turn ahead, at least.

August 29, 2016 7:50 p.m.

Exactly. Brainstorm has its own irreplaceable niche/function. But just for the record you can only play Temporal Mastery on T3 at the earliest, because you need to have 2 lands in your upkeep (2nd land comes into play on a main phase of T2, at the earliest :( otherwise it would be too good).

Cheers people!

Ah, yes. I'd forgotten about that. Still not bad.

With the same 15 proxies I'd mentioned some time ago, would you, or where would you, fit in more of Temporal Mastery and/or Force of Will?

I had a strange thought... Perhaps something interesting could be done with Isochron Scepter, Reclaim, and Temporal Mastery... Then again, Silence or Orim's Chant are already a thing and take one card less, unless Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir is being used.

August 30, 2016 5:53 p.m.

Temporal Mastery is unfortunately exiled once it is used, I guess because R&d wanted to prevent that idea you have here. Mean thoughts, though... I like that hahah

In the proxied budget version, I'd take out a Gitaxian Probe or a Vapor Snag to allow 1x or 2x Temporal Masterys into the deck. Damn they are expensive nowadays. I don't really like Force of Will that much... it devours what you usually need the most, but that's a matter of perspectives; I'd put some in lieu of the Vapor Snags.
Those are cards filling slots, mainly. Jhessian Thief, Vapor Snag and Gitaxian Probe are all subject to possible changes, as they are not essential to the main strategy. The rest of the deck has to remain fairly fixed for it to work properly.

Awesome deck man, I run it with the fetch lands and it has nearly resulted in salty table flips

Murder an onion for me

If you're going to run Brainstorm, you should probably run all of the blue fetches so you can shuffle. If not, I think Ponder is just strictly better.
