Voracious Hatchling

Creature — Elemental

Lifelink

Voracious Hatchling enters the battlefield with four -1/-1 counters on it.

I Liked the hatchling idea too so I built Hatchling pEDH. Black for card draw and some prison spells and the white for the prison spells and strong creatures is just insane. My Voracious Hatchling build has given some regular EDH decks a good run for their money.

I would find a spot for:

Dimir House Guard and

Shred Memory

And you can look into Brainspoil. If you are playing black these cards are for sure needing to be looked into.

These cards can work for you either way. As the spells themselves or tutor for key cards or cards to get you out of a pickle. I use them in my B/W Voracious Hatchling Pauper EDH.

Have you have been in magic deck building limbo for awhile? Yknow that desire to build something new but dont exactly wanna net-deck nor have a very big budget? Well i have come across a card cycle that i have fallen in love with that i recommend checking out! The mimic/hatchling cycles from Eventide!

They are very easy to build around with lost of support given from Guildpact/Dissension/Return to Ravinca/Dragon Maze/Shadowmoor/Eventide sets because in these particular sets i noticed the use of the Hybrid mana in spells were quite abundant however; keep in mind that run of the mill multicolored spells also work as triggers.

I have built decks around Shorecrasher Mimic/Sturdy Hatchling and Riverfall Mimic/Shrewd Hatchling and find them both to be an absolute blast! Blood Moon is somthing i suggest as well if using /. With a bit of Digging on Gatherer searching the card lists of some of the sets i have suggested (or others) is pretty fun and easy to create a new semi-competitive yet budget friendly deck to play with in a casual environment.

Good luck out there and happy brewing!

Just as a note, you can't use Voracious Hatchling in a mono-black deck, due to its mana cost being the hybrid white/black symbol.

Needs more Exsanguinate, Blood Tithe, Gray Merchant of Asphodel, and Debt to the Deathless. Also, Pristine Talisman is really good with Karlov.

Also, I feel like cards like Voracious Hatchling and Soulmender will disappoint you. I imagine them dying a lot without accomplishing much. Scholar of Athreos seems much better than the Soulmender, at least - late game you can drop it and use it in the same turn, or use it multiple times each turn.

Welcome!

So I note you haven't considered lands as yet. For casual play the common/uncommon tap lands are ok, however the rare lands can get expensive. For your deck and theme I would suggest Scoured Barrens and Blighted Steppe.

Soul Warden is a card you will want, probably over Deathgreeter alternatively Perimeter Captain might be an option. Falkenrath Noble is probably too slow, consider cards like Lone Rider  Flip, Gifted Aetherborn, Blood Artist, Ajani's Pridemate or Voracious Hatchling. For a finisher a card like Blood Baron of Vizkopa or Divinity of Pride would fit.

Last but not least non-creature spells. At simplest buy a set of Duress and Despise for disruption alongside Journey to Nowhere and Victim of Night for removal.

If you don't mind spending a bit more Westvale Abbey  Flip or Athreos, God of Passage are fun cards... I hope this is of help!
