Scholar of Athreos

Creature — Human Cleric

: Each opponent loses 1 life. You gain life equal to the life lost this way.

Here are some ideas.

Deathgreeter is a good card to utilize. It works really well in a sac-engine type deck.

Another card you could add is Falkenrath Noble. It only says target, but when someone has to sac a creature, the added bonus of losing life is infuriating.

Personally, I would add Scholar of Athreos. It seems a little expensive, but it works so well in a life-gain deck. It might not be exactly what you're looking for, but it would still synergize really well.

I like the deck! I think I would put in Vona, Butcher of Magan For taking away game changer cards from opponents. I also noticed that this paired with Exquisite Blood is a big game over.

Have you thought about: Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim -could work well with Sanguine Bond and Resplendent Angel -sacrifice the angel after attacking if you have not gained enough life or at the end of opponents turn Drana's Emissary -sit back and watch them slowly die or combine with Anguished Unmaking - - if you have extra life to spare it is a powerful card Kambal, Consul of Allocation -good against creature-less or creature-deficient decks Obzedat, Ghost Council - don't need a defender? Deal 2 damage/gain 2 life each turn after attacking! Also works well with Fatal Push Vizkopa Guildmage - Whenever you gain life, deal equal damage to opponent. With a lifelink creature and Sanguine Bond that is triple damage. Intervention Pact - they won't see it coming Scholar of Athreos - no limit to this ability

These cards may not have lifelink, but may pair well with the deck.

Hello there RAcast_Blaster, thanks for the suggestions.

Let me start with the lands first: the Bojuka Bogs in the mainboard are graveyard hate that don't take up any sideboard space (as you can tell, I have a lot of options for the sideboard and only 15 slots in it) with a low opportunity cost. Compare it with Scarab Feast: if I need graveyard hate, I get it for about the same cost, except with Bojuka Bog I still have the land after. If I don't, Scarab Feast let's me draw a card while I can play Bojuka Bog as a land.

I like to think of the bounce lands as a tapped dual land that also let's me draw an extra land. I can still use whatever land I want to bounce before I play them, so the net result is usually the same: you lose out on one turn's worth of land-mana, in exchange for having both of your colors the next turn. If I'm forced to replay another tap-land, it may be a bit awkward, but the only time it's a real problem is when I have only bounce lands in my hand, which is obviously rare. I play bounce lands in my Tortured Existence deck, The Three R's, and they usually work out very well for me.

The problem with dumping all my high cmc cards is that I feel like I don't have anything that will actually let me close out the game against a more controlling deck. Especially when a good portion of the deck is dedicated to lifegain, with the life-drain being either expensive or unreliable. A 2/2 like Syndic of Tithes isn't going to outrace a Delver of Secrets  Flip, even if I can extort once or twice, and Scholar of Athreos costs me 3 mana to drain my opponent for one. I feel like the life gain in this deck is strong enough to get me to 5 mana consistently, especially against a creature-based ago deck like goblins.

First off thank you for the upvotes!

Really like what you did here. My playgroup is starting to get into PEDH and this is a fantastic starting point for me. I haven't played any PEDH yet so I am not sure how heavy spot removal is available in these kinds of decks. Would something like Icatian Moneychanger, Martyr of Sands, Augur il-Vec, Lone Missionary, Qarsi Sadist, Shu Farmer, Vault Skirge, Scholar of Athreos, Silent Attendant, Benediction of Moons, Death Watch, Golden Urn, Scent of Jasmine and a number of White "Gain X Life" spells fit?

I'm guessing card draw eventually becomes the main problem for this deck and you go into top-deck mode.

Any advice would be great, really looking forward to giving this a try.

Bad cards: Cradle of Vitality, Rakdos, Lord of Riots, Sangromancer, Scholar of Athreos, probably Vampire Nighthawk, Phyrexian Rebirth cuz you have many better sweeps, Terminate cuz you're bloated for removal and it isn't versatile enough, No Mercy cuz you already have removal that works BEFORE the damage is done, Spiteful Visions
