Taigam, Master Opportunist

Legendary Creature — Human Monk

Flurry — Whenever you cast your second spell each turn, copy it, then exile the spell you cast with four time counters on it. If it doesn't have suspend, it gains suspend. (At the beginning of it's upkeep, remove a time counter. When the last is removed, cast it without paying its mana cost. It has haste.)

DemonDragonJ on Which Card Should Replace Keranos?

I have a copy of Keranos, God of Storms in my Numot, the Devastator EDH deck, and, while he is a great creature, I feel that he is not the best match for that deck, so I am contemplating replacing him with another card, and I wish to ask the other users here, for advice, on that subject.

My first choice for a replacement card is New Way Forward, which is a one-shot effect, but it is a very powerful one-shot effect, and this deck does have a slight emphasis on non-creature spells, albeit not to the same extent as my Elsha of the Infinitefoil EDH deck, and my second choice is Taigam, Master Opportunist, who would reduce the mana curve of the deck, but also cause the deck to be more heavily blue, and I wish to keep all three colors close to being balanced, if I can reasonably do so, and that deck also does not have any other cards with suspend, so Taigam would be an odd card for that deck.

What does everyone else say, about this subject? Which card should replace Keranos, if any, or should I keep Keranos in this deck? I certainly am very interested to hear your thoughts, on this matter.

@Andramalech quick rules question for you. Say I have a Taigam, Master Opportunist in play and the second spell I cast is something like Mirrormade, a spell which copies something else. For simplicity’s sake let’s say Mirrormade is targeting something inert like Brutal Suppression so there’s no other triggers or anything that need considering. Here’s what I think happens, but I’m not sure:

The original, authentic Mirrormade gets exiled with suspend counters.

The copy of Mirrormade Taigam produces enters play as a copy of Brutal Suppression—my original target when I cast the authentic one.

Here’s where I would appreciate input. The Mirrormade that went into exile because of Taigam—that’s just a Mirrormade right? When it’s currently suspended in exile it doesn’t exist in suspension as Brutal Suppression, correct?

I reckon, what the deck really needs, is lots of cheap spells that can be cast on every player's turn, to get the most value out of the flurry mechanic. The game plan should be to cast Shiko and Narset, Unified on turn 4, prepare the board beforehand, and then spam small, damage-dealing spells that can easily be brought back with tricks like Underworld Breach, Lier, Disciple of the Drowned, or by recasting copies with Narset, Enlightened Exile. You could then replace draw-discard effects with more "pure" card draw options like Treasure Cruise (if you have a lot of cards in your graveyard), Quick Study or flexible draw like Flame of Anor. The main gameplay should revolve around cheap, repeatable spells, but there can also be some utility from the Magecraft mechanic. Most importantly, the deck should keep continuous pressure on opponents by dealing large amounts of damage through copying small spells.

Must have: Path to Exile, Cyclonic Rift

Useful: Cori Mountain Stalwart, Devoted Duelist, Monk of the Open Hand, Ashling, Flame Dancer, Jori En, Ruin Diver, Ledger Shredder, Smoldering Egg  Flip, Burst Lightning, Electrolyze, Virtue of Courage, Fire / Ice, Galvanic Blast, Heartflame Duelist, Ionize, Lightning Bolt, Lightning Helix, Lightning Strike, Magma Jet, Parch, Play with Fire, Punishing Fire, Risk Factor, Sacred Fire, Searing Spear, Shock, Skullcrack, Thunderbolt, Wild Slash

Possible: Taigam, Master Opportunist, Breeches, the Blastmaker, Gale, Waterdeep Prodigy, Rammas Echor, Ancient Shield, Storm of Saruman, Turn / Burn, Price of Progress, Finale of Promise, Increasing Vengeance, Frolicking Familiar, Molten Influence, Slaying Fire, Wizard's Lightning,

Great point about Pyromancer's Goggles btw, Gidgetimer. I completely missed that one.

Chiming in here with a similar interaction question RE Taigam, Master Opportunist.

Of course, I understand his Flurry trigger applies to any spell, and Veyran's is type-specific, so there will not always be overlap - but when there is, it seems to me that Veyran will trigger to create a second instance of Taigam's trigger. From there, I am operating under the assumption that two copies of the spell go on the stack and the original is exiled with Suspend 4 - is that right or am I coping?

The first trigger resolves, copying the spell and exiling it with Suspend 4

Does the second trigger need to be able to exile the original spell in order to generate the copy? It seems worded such that if the original spell had changed zones, it would generate the copy and then fail to exile it - but I'm no stack wizard.
