Virtue of Courage

Enchantment

Whenever a source you control deals noncombat damage to an opponent, you may exile that many cards from the top of your library. You may play those cards this turn.

(You may cast Virtue of Courage from exile if you sent it on an adventure.)

Embereth Blaze

Instant — Adventure

Embereth Blaze deals 2 damage to any target (creature, player, planeswalker or battle).

(Then send this card on an Adventure in exile. You may cast the enchantment portion from exile.)

(You may cast Embereth Blaze for from anywhere if you would have permission to cast it in that zone, then exile it on an adventure instead of putting it into your graveyard. When you have not chosen to cast Embereth Blaze and put it on the stack, this card is treated only as Virtue of Courage in whatever zone it is in.)

(When not exiled on an adventure, Adventure cards function identically to modal double faced cards when regarding to the interactions of cards that look at them or attempt to cast them.)

Hi Gidgetimer, I have a follow-up question if you don’t mind.

In a four-player game, when I cast Dragon's Approach, Virtue of Courage puts three triggers on the stack, right? Because it says “an opponent”, so it triggers for each opponent separately if I’m not mistaken. Since it is a may-ability, for each trigger I get to choose whether I want to exile the top three cards of my library. Do I have to choose that when those triggers go on the stack, or can I choose while they resolve? I’m asking because usually I won’t be able to make use of nine cards exiled. So I’m hoping that I can exile three cards for the first trigger and then decide for each following trigger if I want to continue exiling or not. Thanks

Hey Rasaru, just thought of another you might like: Virtue of Courage

Return the Past - expensive, but a huge value engine

City on Fire - might not be worth it since you could rarely get the mana discount, but the power is there

Ensnared by the Mara - some damage and value

Spikefield Hazard  Flip - could take a land slot

Court of Embereth - draws a card and starts to make blockers

Virtue of Courage - a bit of burn, then HUGE card advantage. Could be a must-include!

Realm-Scorcher Hellkite - there are a bunch of dragons with repeatable damage abilities--perhaps those would be great mana sinks?

Hearth Elemental - could be decent card draw, then a blocker. Not amazing, but there it is

Flick a Coin - kinda funny

Ravaging Blaze - not amazing removal, but you'll usually have Spell Mastery

Insurrection - a bit anticlimactic, but if you're whittling down life totals this could very often win the game. The red creatures would do bonus damage too. Sorcery synergy I guess

Disrupt Decorum - could get the heat off of you for a turn or two

Abrade - creature removal or artifact removal--the option is nice

Fires of Mount Doom - expensive but repeatable card-draw. A bit of removal and damage too. Perhaps a must-include?

I don't understand how you came up with 9 cards exiled with Virtue of Courage. Other than that, yes. You have effectively reduced the mana to cast Dragon's Approach to 0 with the cost reduction and mana generation off of casting. You will repeatedly be able to exile 3 cards and cast any Dragon's Approach that you find.

(As I was typing I realized that you are probably assuming a 4 player game and just didn't specify it. You will exile 3 cards PER OPPONENT and be able to cast any spells.)

While playtesting I discovered this combo, allowing me to exile my whole deck and play all Dragon's Approach cards in it. Does it work?

Cards on the battlefield:
- Locket of Yesterdays
- Birgi, God of Storytelling  Flip or Runaway Steam-Kin
- Virtue of Courage

Cards in graveyard:
- Dragon's Approach
- Dragon's Approach

Cards in hand:
- Dragon's Approach

I cast Dragon's Approach for because of the Locket of Yesterdays‘ cost reduction. This causes Birgi, God of Storytelling  Flip to produce and Virtue of Courage to exile nine cards. From among those I can play any Dragon’s Approach practically for free as Birgi reimburses any spent. At the end I have my whole library exiled with Virtue, but I only die if I would have to draw a card. So, at the beginning of my next upkeep or instantly to a Ancestral Recall.

But as long as I don’t draw a card, I can cast all Dragon‘s Approaches in my deck.

With Runaway Steam-Kin this should work too, as long as I can repeatedly cast three Dragon‘s Approaches.

Am I missing something?
