Embraal Bruiser

Creature — Human Warrior

Embraal Bruiser enters the battlefield tapped.

Embraal Bruiser has menace as long as you control and artifact.

You have a couple of cards that aren't standard format legal Vampire Envoy and Unnatural Endurance. So the direction to take changes a lot depending on what format you want to play - standard vs. casual with friends vs. a different store or home format like: Modern, EDH(also called Commander), Brawl, Two Headed Giant, Vintage, Legacy, or Pauper.

https://whatsinstandard.com/ is a good way to reference what sets of magic are currently considered "standard".

Another example is that you only have 5 artifacts in total so cards like Embraal Bruiser or Dhund Operative or Fen Hauler aren't going to be as effective. Making their copies easy removes (unless you want to 4x of each of your artifacts and then 4x these cards building a more artifact oriented deck! Decisions decisions).

Things like Cartouche of Ambition and Trial of Ambition have fantastic synergy with each other and your planeswalker so if you'd like to run them (and be able to see them consistently between games) then you'd go with 4x of each and cut some other stuff.

For general knowledge:

One of the best principles of deck building is keeping your card limit to the minimum (60 in standard/modern) and having 4 copies of each card (There's always exceptions though) - streamlining the chance to draw the specific cards you want, each game you play. Much greater chance of drawing a 4/60 than a 1/60 (which is why Liliana's Influence almost counts as having 4 Liliana, Death Wielder)

Scryfall(Better than WotC's Gatherer) and EDHREC will be your best friends searching for cards to make decks with; EDHREC is for the EDH format where it's 100 cards no more or less with no duplicate cards and a "commander" but you can look there for cards within colours, themes, and strategies like -1/-1 counters: (https://edhrec.com/themes/m1-m1-counters) which would be a good synergy with Liliana, Death Wielder.

I actually have the Gideon, Martial Paragon planeswalker deck from Amonkhet and my next craft is to turn it into a viable casual modern deck, since Amonkhet will eventually rotate out of standard but Gideon, nor will this iteration of Liliana, will ever be competitive modern!

Welcome to magic! I only started in Amonkhet myself and am having a blast. Sorry for the long winded response.

Thanks so much for the suggestions Highmastet!

I definitely understand what you mean about Torgaar being out of place. In the draft, his ability to reduce his cost is what got me through most games; even though I did make the make the mistake of thinking it was "half their life" instead of starting life. And with him in the deck it makes Board the Weatherlight more likely to work.

I'm pretty low-budget, but I'm loving the cards you're bringing up. And even though I really want a themed deck, in order to remain competitive, I have to make non-themed choices like Torgaar. I'm already replacing Cabal Evangel with Embraal Bruiser for more punch even though Clerics are more Knight-like in my mind. But I'm definitely going for Vona and Aryel when I expand it to full commander.

Cards I would try to remove from deck because you either lack cards to support them or are just on the weak side:

Embraal Bruiser: lack of artifacts

Graceful Cat: not very strong for its mana cost

Mummy Paramount: lack of zombies to trigger effect

Ruthless Sniper: lack of cycling cards to trigger

Queen's Bay Soldier: there is a white 2 drop that is the same thing but has lifelink (Bishop's Soldier). Would use that over this.

Anointer Priest: not enough token spawning cards. Would maybe keep if you play a set of Oketra's Monument.

Liliana's Defeat: strong vs black, but best not to run cards like this in a mainboard because you never know if your match up will make use of this card from the start.

Getting more of Gifted Aetherborn would help a lot likely.

If possible you may want to also use Walk the Plank unless your friends are playing merfolks.

Hope these suggestions are helpful. Tried to make suggestions that would not brake the bank. Its a nice deck you have there for making it out of a builders kit.

@Lastnotice Did you mean Syndicate Trafficker? I certainly like him better in an artifact deck but this deck is not artifact heavy enough and I don't want to sac my artifacts, Embraal Bruiser may be fragile but no one will want to use removal on him and he adds nice pressure with menace.

My main suggestion for making this deck more effective is prioritizing. Your deck will run much more consistently if you have less 1 ofs and putting 3 or 4 of cards that really help your deck, so you're more likely to draw into them when you need them.

For example, Yeva's Forcemage, Peema Outrider, Embraal Bruiser, and Harvester Troll don't seem to do a whole lot for the deck. You'd be better off running more of things like Bellowing Tanglewurm.

As for some suggestions of things you don't have yet, I can tell you like casual, so I won't get too in-depth with super-competitive combos and things. If you like Ring of Xathrid, consider Ring of Kalonia. If you have both on a 2-color creature like Lord of Extinction, the ability will stack and it will grow even faster.

On the subject of 2-color creatures, I really like Creakwood Liege for this deck, he'll boost all your creatures and make even more creatures to boost. His ability will also stack for 2-color creatures, giving them +2/+2. Baloth Null is also a solid budget card. Works as a big creature, and gets back some of the creatures you're sacrificing.

I don't think Predator's Gambit will help you much, because in testing I usually had several creatures out, but there are plenty of solid enchantments to replace it with like Gift of the Deity or Aspect of Gorgon.

lordnova42 on Help with fleshing out my …

I used to play magic back in high school, but quit shortly after, and haven't played in 14 years, until this weekend.
I went to the midnight pre-release, made a R/G deck, but didn't do that good, 16 out of 28. The Sunday pre-release I made a B/R deck, and took 2nd out of 8th (barely had enough players to hold the tournament).
Some of the guys I was playing with invited me to the Tuesday night standard games they play there, so I need to flesh out my deck.
Here's what I made for my second tournament:
7 Mountain
1 Spire of Industry
9 Swamp
1 Aether Poisoner
2 Alley Strangler
1 Consulate Skygate
1 Consulate Turret
1 Daring Demolition
1 Embraal Bruiser
1 Foundry Hornet
1 Frontline Rebel
1 Gonti's Machinations
1 Hijack
1 Irontread Crusher
1 Lathnu Sailback
1 Night Market Lookout
1 Ornithopter
1 Perilous Predicament
1 Prophetic Prism
1 Quicksmith Rebel
1 Salivating Gremlins
2 Shock
1 Spontaneous Artist
1 Thriving Rats
1 Yahenni, Undying Partisan

Here is my entire inventory of magic cards:
Using just the cards I already have, what cards would you recommend adding, or swapping out, to make this a 60 card casually competitive deck?
I do plan on increasing my collection, but I have a very limited disposable income at this time, so can't go out and buy expensive cards, so I'm probably going to stick to picking up a few booster packs each payday.
Thanks!
