Syndicate Trafficker Discussion

Zerpha on Frank Herbert's Dune Theme Deck

Wow, that's an exhaustive list with Dune analogies! I like how you thought of a representative card for each major character, location, and event.

(I personally somewhat associate Ascendant Evincar with Baron Harkonnen, although I guess Feyd-Rautha would be a better match for him, haha.)

I found your deck by doing a web search for Kaladesh and Frank Herbert's Dune. But to my surprise, I barely found anything on the subject.

Which is surprising to me, since this plane in particular appears to take so much inspiration from the novels:

A hot desert planet where the spice melange, err I mean aether, flows and inspires creativity. There's ornithopers and servos in between elaborate vehicles and automatons, yet no thinking machines.

And the Aetherborn seem to combine multiple concepts from the dune races. Their existence deeply linked with the aether. Keenly aware of their surroundings, living in the moment and making most out of the little amount of valuable life force they have, while looking for ways to prolong it somewhat. And just take a look at Syndicate Trafficker. Now those are some blue within blue eyes! If that doesn't sound like the description of a Fremen eager to get their melange, I don't know what is!

I'm doing a janky budget build that isn't entirely different, and I'm surprised at how well Syndicate Trafficker plays. A 3/1 will trade with a lot, 2 mana is fine for 3 power, and his ability can really screw up blockers, while he also is growing. I'm not saying he's a good enough card for your level, mostly curious if you think he's reasonable for a lower tier deck of this type.

More regarding your deck, would Baleful Strix be of interest? I was thinking it might play stronger than Thoughtcast .

I made a deck trying to work with this card a while ago. Heres what I came up with. http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/barter-bots/

It worked pretty well before the bannings and such, but now I think that the approach I took is not very well suited for the meta. One thing I would say is that Syndicate Trafficker is very good. I also did not update the deck with the introduction of Goblin Engineer , which could let the deck play a different strategy that fits better.

Idk, thats just what I got from running the version that I made.

Caltrops with Sydri, Galvanic Genius 's second ability could be a lot of fun though you do have to be careful because your own creatures will get pinged when they attack.

Commander's Sphere is an upgrade over Manalith as your commander can recycle the Sphere for a slow draw engine. Provides some redundancy with the Strix.

For other sac effects you could look at Morbid Curiosity , Costly Plunder , Reprocess , Reshape , and Syndicate Trafficker

Another artifact creature that begs to be recurred is Meteor Golem

And Aminatou, the Fateshifter is another blink effect on stick to keep you commander getting value from artifacts in the graveyard or just blinking ones in play.

ShadoWolFeng I believe Yahenni, Undying Partisan wouldn't be a bad card to put in. Though I feel as if Syndicate Trafficker will be stronger due to Yahenni being restricted to just creatures. I think Yahenni, Undying Partisan would be really strong in a Meren of Clan Nel Toth or Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest decks.

Yes! RW artifacts with black splash for the strongest options (Marionette Master, Scrapheap Scrounger, Syndicate Trafficker, Herald of Anguish) can be so strong. RW has Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer, for example. This build does lend itself a little more to equipments and tokens, but that's half the fun!

Exactly the type of list I'd be planning to make with Mairsil... Mostly here looking for inspiration, and will probably dig into some things from this.

Here's some of my jank for you.- Helldozer because Wizards kind of directly told us they wanted us to play Non-basic land removal with Ixalan.

  • Mirage Mirror because it is always nice to turn into a Mountain when Wrath of God is raging.

  • Deadeye Tracker because Mairsil hates every graveyard that isn't your own. No, wait, even your own. We want things in cages, not in graves.

  • Dark Impostor because getting rid of things is good. Unfortunately it doesn't copy its static ability, which would've been even better.

  • Syndicate Trafficker because, well, you're going to have that artifact in your graveyard in order to exile it with Mairsil anyway. Hey look there's Wrath of God again. Hi, Wrath of God!

  • Captivating Crew because it's always nice to look for some mates.

  • Soul Conduit because we take what we want. Sometimes, what we want is peoples' lives.

  • Grimoire of the Dead because Wizards like to read. Then kill themselves and come back with some friends.

  • Tatsumasa, the Dragon's Fang because becoming a dragon seems like a thing a wizard would do. Also if you don't want to become a dragon, you can stab people with it.

  • Hisoka, Minamo Sensei because you might as well throw those expensive card into your 'yard before you put them in a cage. And if you get to counter something with it, so much the better.

  • Xathrid Slyblade because we are fine with losing hexproof if we don't have hexproof. Be careful when using it with Swiftfoot Boots though.

  • Honor-Worn Shaku I have not quite found a use for yet. But if you find something which gets a kick out of Mairsil tapping or untapping, this will be your combopiece. Thought I'd throw it in.

You can hopefully tell Mairsil makes me very happy.
