I've recently added 3x Extirpate to this deck, primarily because I hate Gaea's Blessing... That split second ability saves my bacon whenever anyone tries to get thier library back from the graveyard, i'll be like... "Damn, no that ain't happenin!!!"

Yeah, also useful against other stuff i suppose :)

Because 3,000 is too mainstream. Thanks for all of the interest and comments. You are all the reason this deck was possible. It's still my most treasured deck.

Honing in

Harudoku, 11 years ago

Things are starting to come together pretty well; I'm considering Ultimate Price for Desecration Demon and a few more Counterflux just to have more hard counters available, along with POSSIBLY retooling a bit into counterburn with some Lightning Strike. Gainsay is another possibility, but I'm a little less sure about that one; one of the main issues with UW control is Elspeth, after all. We'll see. Ideas always welcome.

As I've been asked a few times: I don't really love Steam Augury. I'm willing to give it another try, but it never really seemed to give me what I wanted. Feel free to suggest where I would cut to add it in, because I would love to make it work.

Some changes in the sideboard. - minus 1 Thoughtseize - minus 1 Chandra + two burning earth Played against two Mazes End last week, as well as control and I think these should be able to do some work there ...

Met up with my friends at our local shop. And a guy came to ask if I can fight him. Without a second thought, I accept his challenge and use this deck against him. Lost all 3 games against him, he used a pretty strong/expensive Boros deck, which he claimed wasn't that 'strong'. During that time, I still don't have my sideboard so we just play straight without changing anything game after game.

Game 1: I've had him most of the game with Young Pyromancer keeps on spawning tokens and Nivix Cyclops to contain him. But right when he cast a couple of Soldier of the Pantheon, the game became very hard for me to recover. Managed to draw two Spellheart Chimera and able to cast them and their power was 5. His life was 10 at that time and mine was 8. I'm pretty sure I can end it after his turn but things turn to worse when he use Brave the Elements and swing for the win.

Game 2: Land screwed. When I was at 8 life, he Boros Charmfoil me twice but I manage to counter one with Dissolve. But I didn't have any creatures on board at that time so he swing for the win.

Game 3: Just when I thought things could not get any worse, he cast Boros Reckoner which totally taken me aback. I only have Guttersnipe, Flamespeaker Adept and Young Pyromancer on the field while he have a Boros Reckoner, a couple of Soldier of the Pantheon and Spear of Heliod. He Boros Charmfoil me when I was at 10 life and he use Brave the Elements to swing for the win.

Overall, I'm quite dissapointed myself. Despite having the upper hand on game 1, there's so many misplay that I did and I always forgot about Soldier of the Pantheon being protection from multicolored. He basically use them to block Nivix Cyclops and I hardly drew Spellheart Chimera after game 1. Looking for ways to improve this deck so it can fight even better against a deck like his. AEtherize might be a good addition to replace Voyage's End.

play testing says its still too slow

redninja, 11 years ago

I was winning around 50% of my games but anything that went into a long game like turn 6 onward was a killer, and agent of fates is simply too slow for this kind of deck. I've kept the night howlers though as the are good against u/w sweepers and its a solid bomb when they burn my field away and mono red cant deal with them go up to fnm tomorrow and test further.....

Switched syncopate to dissolve and curse of the swine to rapid hybridization, removed Medomai and added another Jace, and i placed revoke existence in the side board

Control Edits

jgriff2523, 11 years ago

Added Sideboard control to counter decks that run heavy R/W aggro removal. Cards like Chained to the Rocks into Brimaz, King of Oreskos ruins blockers that could take out the cat king before he gets out of control. Additions like AEtherize and Rapid Hybridization will allow me to counter large-scale attacks from token armies and take out singular threats, respectively.

Satyr no longer dances with fire

DannyG, 11 years ago

So after few weeks I finally decided to totally move away Satyr Firedancer from the deck. At first the card looked really strong, and eventually turned into sideboard card first to be completely removed. This card is nice indeed but I realized it's only strong vs certain matchups which don't happen that much and instead of it being dead card for most of the time, there are some better options. Few more changes have been made to the deck together with Satyr departure. I got rid of black in here, that means no Oracle of Bones and Toil / Trouble anymore. In place of scrylands that gave me acess to black i put in 2x Boros Guildgate and 1 Mountain as with the changes I need more white sources now. I'll be trying to get a playset of Mutavault in here asap, and I can only blame myself I have't bought it when the price wasn't so ridiculous as it is now. Young Pyromancer got removed from the deck as well, his place was taken by Ash Zealot as it is a creature that puts a nice pressure, does well against slow and fast decks and haste makes it good topdeck to play after sweeper. Right now I play with 8 creatures being only Phoenixes and Zealots plus 30 non-creature spells.

Also the sideboard looks a bit different:

Blind Obedience - amazing vs aggro and G/R/x monsters. It stops the early pressure, helps getting a bit more damage through tapped blockers and the extort with this amount of spells in deck is nice.

Firedrinker Satyr - one of the cards to sideboard in against slow decks to become more aggro oriented, put early pressure and have opponent interact with us.

Mizzium Mortars and Chained to the Rocks - brought in to get rid of the bigger threats, namely Stormbreath Dragon, Blood Baron of Vizkopa, Polukranos, World Eater etc.

Viashino Firstblade - a really good card introduced by James Fazzolari who took 23rd at GP Melbourne with a 11-4 score (he could have done better but in last game he recieved a match loss due to shuffling sideboard upside down). I'd like to give credit to this man as his ideas really inspired me to build this deck. Hitting it on turn 3 gives great tempo, and hits hard when left unattended.

Spark Trooper - 12 damage swing (6 dmg + 6 lifegain) can be a really big deal in all the races we would like to take. We can simply threat is as 6dmg Warleader's Helix with a bit harder mana cost.

This is how the deck looks for now, hope it can be developed in even better way. And I need to get this damn Mutavaults already!

Tweaking ?

xVisage, 11 years ago

Officially set land to 24, added 4x Temple of Deceit to see if the Scry lands are worth it. In conjunction with this change, I've swapped all instances of Devour Flesh with Far / Away. I've also added Pharika's Cure to the Sideboard to help deal with early threats, as the lifegain is invaluable against fast tempo decks.

Fixes

Nimbus171, 11 years ago

Removed guild gates and mazes end for shocklands, vivid lands. I turned the focus more on creatures and enchantments using less instants and sorceries to build my mana base and focused more on creatures and artifacts. Added in more tutors/ tutor like effects to help boost and improve consistency Added in the God weapons for flavor and for synergy with other pieces of my deck (Bident and Spear work together and the whip works well with my commander) Added in Several cards that grant draw power (rhystic study, scroll rack etc) Removed most of the boardwipe sorceries and instants in favor of relying on my commander. There shall be more added soon as i finish making this deck myself

Adjusted Mana/Eidolons

Tempeszt, 11 years ago

Thanks again for the feedback, landstalker10! After some more play testing, I did find that I got land flooded often. I swapped 3 Plains for rounding out my Hopeful Eidolons to 4. It seems much more consistent now.

FNM 5-2

sk00kes, 11 years ago

Just an update of last Friday's FNM. First round went 2-0 and drew final game, but my opponent was a friend and agreed that with a few more turns i had the game and conceded. 3-0 Next round wound up losing 2 close matchups. Technically i conceded my next game, but only because my opponent still had a chance to prize, i wound up winning the friendly 2 games in dominant fashion. Final game won against a pauper home brew easily. 2-2

I took out my 2 copies of Polukranos and put in leatherback baloths! That'll be an efficient turn 2 play! Any suggestions are welcome

Stepping into modern

Wainwright, 11 years ago

Comment clear up from Standard Deck - moving it in to modern, it's still a great mechanic and fun to play. But I'm in need of help - getting it somewhere close to where it can be competitive in the format. By competitive I just mean, not getting my A** handed to me every game, I don't expect the deck to be a world beater.
