Mockery of Death —Feb. 5, 2016

Please check out my new U/B/W Mockery deck I just built to deal with 4-Color Rally! :) deck-large:mockery-of-death

You forgot to add that Mirror Mockery + Thunderclap Wyvern adds an additional +1/+1 during combat!

Hmmm, I wonder how well Eldrazi Skyspawner would work in this deck. Going to have to test that.

What do you think of Eldrazi Displacer in the deck? It might work like mirror mockery but more than once per turn.

What do you think of Relief Captain in here? Psuedo Glorious Anthem that can continue to pile counters onto your creatures if the board is open or you have a Whirler Rogue to make it unblockable. Just a thought!

I agree with the.beanpole. Relief Captain could be pretty dope dude.

And this has a decent matchup against even Abzan, since if you Mirror Mockery a Siege Rhino makes it impossible to swing unless they want to have a lifegain/loss fight.

I have a playset of Mirror Mockery and I wanted to build this exact deck.

what fun! Drowner of Hope could be quite entertaining. Mana boost and lock down their board? Hmm. There could also be a great lock down with Halimar Tidecaller and Scatter to the Winds. That's a recurring counterspell right there.

Both Drowner of Hope and Halimar Tidecaller are good cards, but to put something in, you have to take something out. There are only 2 Scatter to the Winds in the deck so Halimar wouldn't be consistent enough. This deck does lack a closer though so I was considering Dragonlord Ojutai.

The Halimar Tidecaller is best for a spell deck. Combine it with Ulamog's Reclaimer and Auramancer for drawing a new hand every time you attack.

Eldrazi Displacer is not just for ETB creatures. It targets ANY creature. Even enemies. Throw in Illusory Gains with it and fun times.

How does the Sideboard play out?

OminousRex says... #16

If you are playing against a control or burn deck then bring in Dispel.
Ramp decks or large creatures bring in Disdainful Stroke or Ojutai's Command.
Singing Bell Strike is good for aggro and midrange.

Lriley777 says... #17

I feel like Encase in Ice would better fit that role. Midrange can pay the 6 mana if needed.

OminousRex says... #18

Well, this is an aggro deck so if they are locking there mana down for a single attack then they will lose. Chump block their 6-cost attack with a thopter ;). I have tried Encase in Ice though and it's just not as consistent since there are 3 colors it wont work against.

Love the deck! Makes me long for the days of Thassa, God of the Sea and Master of Waves. Have you had any trouble getting to the Mirror Mockery? I was wondering if 2 Anticipate might be in order for earlier game, knowing Dragonlord Ojutai will hopefully help with that later. Thoughts? Also, for aggro any reason not to go with 4 Flooded Strand instead of the 2 Meandering River to avoid tapped land coming in?

Lastly, any thoughts about Stasis Snare or Quarantine Field in the side to help get rid of other big threats and/or Planeswalkers? Or maybe a few Arashin Cleric to keep up with Atarka Red? Thanks very much for sharing-- I am looking forward to building something inspired by this for sure!!

So I haven't had any problem drawing Mirror Mockery, and the deck gets going very quickly even without it. It's actually a better play mid game when you have some way to protect the card you put it on. I play Stratus Dancer face down if I ever draw a Mockery. You are right about using 2 more Flooded Strands instead of Meandering River. I only own 2 of them, but I will update the deck to show the better lands.

Arashin Cleric is a great sideboard option - Gain 2 life every time he attacks with mockery :). I wouldn't worry too much about Planeswalkers though. Both Negate and Scatter to the Winds handle them and we have enough elusive attackers to kill them quickly. Singing Bell Strike is actually a highly underrated way of dealing with big creatures. Paying 6 mana to attck once with a creature is a losing strategy and I secretly hope they do. It's cheap casting cost allows you to use it early and keep mana for other plays. You can experiment with Stasis Snare in the sideboard and let us know how it does, but I would suggest trying the Bell Strikes first and see how it plays. It is very effective in this deck.

Bell strike sucks vs red/green, and any blue/artifact or just artifact heavy deck or big eldrazi creature decks.

It is best used with a tap ability, or creature like Blinding Drone or Eldrazi Displacer. Otherwise, might as well use Tightening Coils or the new Containment Membrane.

Btw, since Eldrazi are devoid displacer is still Blue deck compatible. :p

Gotcha, OminousRex. I'll give it a spin w/o Anticipates. I know you are trying to keep the white to a splash, but I'm also seeing some other potential sideboard protection/removal for "The Mockeried", perhaps in the form of Valorous Stance or Feat of Resistance. I'm also considering Slip Through Space as well. I'll holler back when I've built something and have some results. Thanks again!

And now I'm thinking of whether Icefall Regent might be a thing with Mirror Mockery. Granted, the token copy leaves the battlefield at EOT, but you'd get another opponent's creature tapped down for that turn at combat and fly in with 8 just with the Icefalls (or more with Thunderclap Wyvern in play), with the added cost of 2 to target either Icefall on their way in. Hmmm.

February 4, 2016 11:57 a.m.

the.beanpole says... #24

lctofu, the tokens do not enter the battlefield attacking, so you don't get extra damage in with Mirror Mockery, only the etb effect, which is tapping down a creature in the case of Icefall Regent.

Oh DUH! Completely forgot about that! :-p Guess I'll splash red for Expedite (not)!
