Be most welcome to my budget deck proposal for a competitive Modern Deck. The idea is to keep it as viable as possible while keeping the list under 50 usd. The way it operates is based on the classic “MBC” architecture, and has a good variety of win conditions, and metagame answers packed.

This is the evolution of “Hervaiser 4.0 (Black Control)”, Deck that was heavily tested on paper MTG events, and that had pretty successful results. The adjustments were made using new pieces from recent MTG releases to improve the overall standing of the Deck against the current meta.

As always I appreciate your comments and ideas to improve the list. Thank you for reading, and I hope you like it. Do not forget to upvote!

Spells

Spot Removal [12]

  • Cast Down, Ultimate Price, Go for the Throat (6).- All these spells do one thing and one thing alone, remove a target at instant speed for as low as 2 CMC. The reason why three different versions of the same effect were included, is to circumvent the downside of each one, allowing them to fix each other's weakness.
  • Defile (4).- A one CMC removal spell that also gets rid of indestructible targets. Has the advantage of becoming stronger the more swamps you have in play.
  • Dismember (2).- A versatile and effective removal spell that removes a big target for any combination of mana and life. .
  • Feed the Swarm (2).- Black has always had a pretty bad shortcoming when it comes to removal, enchantments. This is a slow version of the other 2 CMC of the deck, that exchanges the “Instant Speed” for the change of affecting enchantments, that is other ways impossible for most Mono Black Decks.

Mass Removal [3]

  • Mutilate (3).- This spell works similar to Defile for their power is based on the amount of swamps that you have in play. This is a solid sweeper that also gets rid of indestructible targets.

Disruption [10]

  • Agonizing Remorse (4).- The best way to get rid of problematic targets, is to take them out from the game before they can actually get into it. Although not as fast as Thoughtseize, it has two other advantages to offer; helps to manage the opponent’s graveyard, and is way cheaper.
  • Duress (2).- This spell is here to help Agonizing Remorse with fast non creature spells, helping to get an edge against combo and control decks.
  • Memoricide (2).- Most decks have a winning condition, or some cards that are of much importance to their function. Agonizing Remorse and Duress help scouting for targets and weaking the hand while Memoricide can make sure to dismember the opponent’s strategy, by getting rid of this pieces permanently
  • Bojuka Bog (2).- There are many powerful and broken graveyard cantered decks out there, and this card is an amazing way to counter them “for free”, because the effect comes as cantrip embed in a land, thus freeing up some space for other spells in the main list.

Utility [8]

  • Barren Moor (3).- Simple cycling land to avoid flooding
  • Lashwrithe (1).- This decks has just a little amount of creatures, and although potent, sometimes they can fall short in size in comparison to some other things on the board. Lashwrithe comes into play as a creature that gets bigger with every played swamp, and if removed, you can give the very same effect to any other creature, turning it into a powerhouse that can finish the game with one swing.
  • Sign in Blood (4).- Besides Night's Whisper, there is no better version of this effect. “ cars for 2 life is a good deal, and since it lets you choose the target of it, you can “Shock” you opponent in a pinch to close the game.

Creatures

  • Desecration Demon (3).- A powerful 6/6 Trample flyer for 4 CMC with a downside that actually benefits the game plan.
  • Sangromancer (2).- A 3/3 flyer for 3 CMC is not impressive, but her gaining life skills make up for that, helping to mitigate the loss of life cause by some spells of the Deck. She gives life every time something dies (even tokens for they enter the graveyard before they cease to exist) or whenever a card is discarded, providing with huge chunks of life.
  • Foulmire Knight (3).- This is a cheap 1/1 for 1 CMC equipped with Deathtouch. Helps to defend early game, and can trade form something bigger if needed, and can also draw a card in a pinch.

Sideboard

  • Consume Spirit (2).- When creatures are not a viable way to deplete your opponent’s life total, this becomes an alternate win condition. Especially effective when paired with Contaminated Ground.
  • Contaminated Ground (4).- This card covers a double purpose; It disrupts the opponent mana base or land based plans by turning a land into a swamp, and also “shocks” the enemy every time the land is tapped for mana. The spell is just 2 CMC allowing the disruption to start early in the game, and the burn caused by the 2-life tax for every tap can be quite decisive long term. Useful versus Tron and the likes that have land centered strategies.
  • Duress (2).- Two extra copies as side board option to fight Control Decks.
  • Eat to Extinction (2).- Provides “permanent” removal against Creatures and Planeswalker at Instant speed, that helps to manage them when the main list’s resources are not enough.
  • Memoricide (1).- An extra copy is included to help disrupt combo decks.
  • Mutilate (1).- Sometimes having a full set of sweepers is needed to keep control over the board.
  • Nihil Spellbomb (2).- A clear anti graveyard measure. Only 2 copies were included because the deck itself has many other options to handle the graveyard, thus just adding this when extra measures are required.
  • The Eldest Reborn (2).- This is a powerful card that kills something, makes the opponent discard a card and gains control over something lurking in the opponent’s graveyard, all in one package. Taking into account the amount of removal and discard the main Deck has, usually there are good targets to bring back.

Maybeboard

  • Arguel's Blood Fast  Temple of Aclazotz (1-2).- A possible replacement for Sign in Blood, looking for a more stable way to draw cards. Also Temple of Aclazotz might be lifesaving in a pinch.
  • Dread Shade (?).- An obscure but very powerful creature; 3/3 for 3 CMC is not bad, and it can grow and grow with all the black mana you have available. It was “replaced” by Lashwrithe to an extent, and there seems to be no space for it in the main list.
  • Dreadhorde Invasion (3).- Since the Deck has not many creatures, being able to spawn one every turn it very useful (or to bolster the one we have), especially against control. Currently a possible Foulmire Knight replacement.
  • Bile Blight (2).- This obviously competes with Mutilate. While Mutilate is way more powerful and flexible, Bile Blight has half the CMC cost and hits a huge chuck of creatures. The reason why it is being revised and not included in the main deck, is because it falls short in many games, being just a dead card on hand.
