Spells

Spot Removal

  • Defile(4).- A one mana removal spell that gets rid of everything… even indestructible things. Also has the plus of becoming stronger the longer the game lasts.
  • Devour in Shadow(4).- A pretty solid removal spell, with the negligible side effect of paying life.
  • Dismember(4).- One of the best removal spells that black has to offer, for 1 mana and some life you can kill huge creatures.
  • Ruinous Path(2).- Pretty standard removal, but comes with two great assets: the option to kill planeswalkers, and the chance to make a creature out of a land in a pinch.
  • Tragic Slip(2).- Simple and underpowered, but if cast after one casualty, it becomes one of the best removal spells in the entire deck!.

Mass Removal

  • Mutilate(2).- This spell reminds me of Defilefor they work in the same way, but this hits everything on the board. Just as amazing, and also gets stronger late game.

Disruption

  • Duress(3).- The main and possible only line of defense against non creature spells.
  • Harsh Scrutiny(2).- This one aids getting rid of troublesome creatures directly from the hand, lets you scry and helps to keep the opponents hand checked.
  • Memoricide(2).- Because the only thing that is better than removing a card, is to remove all copies of it from every aspect of the game.
  • Contaminated Ground(0).- This card covers a double purpose. First of all disrupts the mana base of your opponent turning the land into a swamp, and second it “shoks” every time it is tapped for mana. This can be done as soon as turn 2 causing heavy disruption and hampering the opponent’s development.
  • Bojuka Bog(2).- There are many powerful and broken graveyard cantered strategies out there, and this card is an amazing way to counter them “for free”, because the effect comes as cantrip embed in a land.
  • Nihil Spellbomb(0).- This is meant to help against grave tactics when Bojuka Bogis not enough, having the same effect while also giving you a card in return.
  • The Eldest Reborn(0).- This is a powerful card that potentially kills something, make the opponent discard and brings something back to fight for you. Coupled with the insane amount of removal available to this deck, there is usually a huge pool of possible targets to gain control off.

Utility

  • Sign in Blood(3).- Yes there are other and better versions of this, but it works, and I have found really useful the fact that it can become a Shock if needed to finish the opponent up.
  • Witch's Cottage(2).- Simple yet effective, can help to recover a creature lost in the battle for no additional cost. It also counts as a swamp so works great with the rest of the deck.
  • Lashwrithe(1).- There are a couple of matches in which there is need of something bigger than a 6/6Desecration Demon. For those times of dire need, we have this artifact that has a similar passive effect to that ofDread Shade, that can work on virtually any creature that you possess, making such creature a huge monster.

Creatures

  • Desecration Demon(3).- A win condition by itself! Having a 6/6 flyer with trample on turn 4 is just amazing, putting a lot of pressure on your opponent. And if they sacrifice a creature to keep it tapped, you are still winning a free removal interaction.
  • Dread Shade(3)- .This is a creature that can be enlarged at will, may it be to defend against a big threat, or to achieve a heavy hit in case it is not properly blocked. It might not be obvious but with the help of Cabal Stronghold this thing can get huge.
  • Sangromancer(2).- While a 3/3 flying body for 5 mana is not impressive, her life gaining skills can be decisive, keeping you alive when facing a lot of damage and helping to mitigate the life payments of the spells in the deck.
  • Vampire Nighthawk(3).- This creature is like a switchblade. Great offensively for it flies and helps gaining life, and great defensively with deathtouch letting him block and kill almost anything no matter how big it is.
