Trying a little experiment here.

This is a very basic control deck. There is a lot of removal, a lot of hatred, and a lot of discard. In between that, some win conditions are slotted in.

The "theme" here that makes this deck more than just a pile of good cards is that you can pay a lot of life for powerful spells like Dark Confidant, Bitterblossom, and Thoughtseize, which under normal circumstances would be very dangerous in Modern because of the prevalence of Burn. Burn will basically always be good in Modern because of fetchlands unless something drastically unpredictable changes in the future. However, the inherent weakness of these powerful black spells is mitigated by the presence of Platinum Emperion. Normally Thoughtseize based midrange decks struggle against Burn and similar decks, basically anything with Monastery Swiftspear in it. However because of the unique special ability of the Emperion the win rate against these decks improves dramatically. This frees up critical sideboard slots to focus on battling other decks.
