RUG Scapeshift

Modern Combo Control

leondal

Sideboard

This is a pretty standard Scapeshift list that I piloted to some success after the banning of dig through time. I was able to win many LGS tournaments and came 6th at MA TCG States.

Scapeshift is a deck that used to be a very big player back when dig through time existed. Also, it had good matchups versus the biggest decks at the time, like delver, junk, and pod.

I feel like the time may be coming around again as the format begins to stabilize and many decks are going more midrange. Even UR twin is largely going to rug or grixis variants. Also, the prevalence of burn is beginning to subside, and we are beginning to see more zoo and other collected company decks.

The goal here is to slowly adapt this deck into the current meta by learning from other RUG-based control decks.

The biggest weakness I've always found with this deck is that it has only one win condition, and that win condition only works one time. Also, the card quality is low, with tons of fluff in cards like Search for Tomorrow. The last place this deck wants to be is in top deck mode.

I'm looking to the recent successes of Temur Twin and Grixis Moon decks. These decks either dilute or eliminate their Combo for better draw quality. In effect, they are pre-sideboarded for twin/delver mirrors, with additional win cons.

Possible win conditions for this deck:

--Keranos : probably my choice since it doesn't die to removal and provides card advantage. --Batterskull : good card but does not match up well against Tasigur or Kologhan's Command. Could be paired with academy ruins. --Tarmogoyf : I love this card and it's the best answer to opposing Goyfs and Tasigurs. Without a density if threats, though, this is Answered. --Thragtusk or Primeval Titan : powerful creatures but are better for proactive strategies.

For this purpose, I'm going with Keranos. It's almost impossible for most decks to deal with and literally impossible for grixis decks.

-2 Peer Through Depths, +1 Keranos, God of Storms, +1 Anticipate
