TIPS:

  • Whether you go for the CounterTop lock, or the ThopterSword combo first will depend on what deck youre playing against, and what you get in your opening hand. Make up your mind early about what youre going for, and commit to it. Trying to reach for both at the same time will most likely end up in you being inconsistent and lose.
  • You can tap to use Senseis Divining Tops draw ability, and in response, sac it to feed the Foundry. You draw a card, gain 1 life, and get a 1/1 flying Thopter token.
  • Academy Ruins can put artifacts on top of your library. If in need, you can use it instead of Top to get a certain cmc card there.
  • If youre playing against a deck running G, assume there are Krosan Grips lurking about. As soon as that player hits 3 lands, start leaving cmc3 cards on top of the library whenever possible to stop it, since triggered abilities are not stopped by Split Second.

SYNERGIES:

  • Counterbalance + Senseis Divining Top (+ Brainstorm + Fetchlands): The dreaded CounterTop combo. Counterbalance will allow you counter spells for free, so long as the cmc spell being played matches cmc the spell you reveal. The trick is making them match, and that is where Top really shines. You can also use Brainstorm to put cards in your hand on top. Dont like the three cards you see? Crack a fetchland, shuffle, then look at 3 new cards! This is the main card advantage engine in the deck.

  • Thopter Foundry + Sword of the Meek: A combo that was initially used in Extended, it was deemed too powerful in the format and was banned. Resilient, easy to assemble and cheap, it allows for simultaneous life gain and token producing. Plus, you can do it whenever you have spare mana open, and repeat, ad nauseum. Our primary win condition in this deck, it is very hard to stop once it gets rolling.

  • Crucible of Worlds + Seat of the Synod + Thopter Foundry: A much slower but alternate route to powering the ThopterCombo, if you dont have the Sword you need.

  • Crucible of Worlds + Fetchlands: Thinning out your deck and getting as many lands in play as possible to feed your ThopterSword is possible by reusing fetchands. It also makes Back to Basics far more effective if you run that out of the sideboard, and also increases the chance of seeing spells on top of your library with top, instead of lands. It can also power up your Vedalken Shackles if you need to brag a fatty.

  • Enlightened Tutor + Silver bullet or Combo Piece: This handy 1cmc tutor will find you what you need when you need it. Whether its finishing a combo, finding an out to a threat, or digging up some land that you need, Enlightened Tutor is a card you will always be happy to find, since it will always find something you need.

Summary: CounterTop and ThopterSword, two of the most notorious combos in Legacy, rolled up in a control shell. The CounterTop combo is used to protect your main wincon of Thopter Foundry and Sword of the Meek. Enlightened Tutor allows you to pull whatever pieces you need together, while giving you access to cards that can buy you time or lock your opponent out of the game. Remove your opponents threats and try to control the board until you can combo out. Should the combo fail, Vedalken Shackles and Elspeth are there to bail you out.
