Torching the comments —Sept. 25, 2015

Cleaning house again. A mighty thanks to all who have shared their comments + ideas.

I'm going to give Domri Rade a shot in here and see how that goes.

Maybe try putting in xenagos both the god and planeswalker

I've definitely thought of adding Xenagos, the Reveler, I may try him out. As for Xenagos, God of Revels, he's already an integral part of the deck. Arguably Atarka's BFF.

Not sure if you realize this or not but I'll point it out for anyone who hasn't taken a good look at the deck yet cause I just found this out while test playing! Savage Ventmaw + Aggravated Assault = Infinite combat phases. Move over Hellkite Charger combos... Ventmaw is here!!

Why not use hellkite charger AND ventmaw together? Or are you saying it'll be easier to get out the Aggravated Assault and Savage Ventmaw than Hellkite Charger and Sword of Feast and Famine/Bear Umbra?

Yep, I'm definitely aware of Aggravated Assault + Savage Ventmaw . Dragon slams for days.

How about aFierce Empath? Another tutor for one of your dragons.

Forkbeard says... #7

Quite possibly ojmandias, more tutor isn't a bad thing! I'll see if I can swap something out to playtest it, cheers.

I also personally advocate for Mob Rule its a versatile game winner against token decks, and decks with large fatties. I once used it on an Emrakul. The look on that guys face was great.

I like Mob Rule, a mini Insurrection. I'm not sure if it's necessary for this deck but I dig the card.

Maybe try out Heat Shimmer, Splinter Twin or Twinflame all three can clone some of your ETB dragons such as Scourge of Valkas or just make another giant flyer and Twinflame can do it multiple times! Thunderbreak Regent also seems like a good inclusion to Atarka's party.

Good suggestions booman27, I'm really leaning toward adding Splinter Twin in here (it would be evil on Destructor Dragon). I've been swithering as to whether or not I should throw in Thunderbreak Regent. It's a decent effect I suppose, but I don't know how much of a deterrent 3 dmg will be in the long run. I'll playtest him, see how it goes.

Dragonlord's Servant may be a nice addition to this for mana help. Winds of Qal Sisma could also be good for protecting yourself and your dragons, whether on offence or defense. Dragonstorm is a pretty good search card if you can cast something before it as well! I suggest these because I'm running them in my Atarka deck (its not updated on here though). Your deck looks great. Upvoted!

Thanks Sloth_Force! I've been considering Dragonlord's Servant but I can't decide what to take out to make room for him, or even if he's necessary with all of my other ramp spells etc. I hadn't considered Winds of Qal Sisma, could be handy! Dragonstorm is great, my issue is of course the casting cost. The odds of casting a few things before the 8 to take advantage of Storm are pretty low.

I'm going to go check out your deck now!

To help your possible OTK I think a Gratuitous Violence would help because it only doubles the damage your creatures would do unlike Furnace of Rath. As a bonus it doubles your Ryusei and new Artarka damage as well.

Awesome deck! I had been running a Temur dragons deck and scaled it back to straight Gruul for the sole purpose of putting Atarka at the helm. Your build has given me some much needed validation (and some ideas).

While mine focuses a little more heavily on Atarka's theme (Gratuitous Violence, Rage Reflection, Berserkers' Onslaught) and enabling more combats (Bear Umbra, Sword of Feast and Famine, Nature's Way to feed Hellkite Charger/Aggravated Assault, with Savage Beating as a one-off that fits both strategies), that doesn't necessarily mean I have any good suggestions for you. Other than maybe Gratuitous Violence, which gives you double double strike. There's always a trade-off, and I have fewer fetches/tutors as a result of my strategy. I'm still not sure mine won't evolve to play more like this one.

I would like to get your take on a couple of things though:

  1. Do you find that you get a lot of value out of Crucible of Fire? It is obviously better with double strike in the mix, but I'm on the fence as to whether I should include it.

  2. Have you had any issues around the lack of card draw? I'm toying with the idea of testing cards like Dragon Mage or Greater Good. Maybe even Mind's Eye.

Thanks in advance (and for posting your build)!

Great call Coinman1863 & dendrobatid, I'll find a spot for Gratuitous Violence in here for sure.

dendrobatid - First of all, thanks for the props. I'd be interested in checking out your deck as well.

My thoughts on Crucible of Fire - Totally include it. It could be considered a little win more-ish, but it gives your dragons a huge boost and with double strike in the mix it often spells death for opponents (if In the Web of War is on the field as well, 1 hit from Atarka seals the deal). The only card it doesn't synergize with is Wild Pair but I actually haven't come across that particular problem yet. So having said all of this, I'm a little tempted to swap it out for the aforementioned Gratuitous Violence.

As for the lack of card draw, so far is hasn't been an issue. It's a very mana intensive deck so it's actually pretty rare that I'm sitting with an empty mit. Greater Good is tempting though - A nice response to spot removals or wipes and would also go really well with Feldon + Kiki tokens. I think I may have to try it out.

Excellent food for thought, thanks guys.

Wait...Would Dictate of the Twin Gods be strictly better than Gratuitous Violence?

April 6, 2015 1:02 a.m.

dendrobatid says... #19

I think that would be entirely situational as for which is strictly better. Dictate of the Twin Gods covers all damage sources instead of just creatures. Plus it has flash, so its flexibility extends to ambushes, etc. The reason I'd personally pick Gratuitous Violence over Dictate is that GV only helps me. Dictate of the Twin Gods would double your opponent(s)' damage output as well. And with only Earthquake in the deck for direct, Dictate doesn't get to reach its full potential. Of course, with both of them together you get x4 double strike (they multiply like other doubling effects).

Coinman1863 says... #20

What dendrobatid says also applies to Furnace of Rath as well. It all depends on how much you want your opponents hitting you because I imaging this is a "Swing with the Team" kind of deck which will leave you open to attacks. Also Dictate of the Twin Gods doubles burn damage as well so it is doubly the threat to you because A: it deals more damage to you, and B: It makes your creatures more easy to kill due to doubled burn and creature damage.

Forkbeard says... #21

Ah yes, I forgot that Dictate applies to all. GV is definitely the way to go here.

Slightly controversial move - I'm swapping out Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker for Greater Good. Dragonspeaker is a great fit flavour-wise, sure his 4/4 indestructible dragon was handy (especially with Atarka in the mix) and his removal option was useful in a pinch...But quite frankly, he's been a little underwhelming. I'm looking forward to seeing what having a sac outlet/card draw machine is like in this deck.

I'm also subbing Gratuitous Violence in for Regrowth. I think it's going to work out just fine.

griffstick says... #23

I dont like it that much cause your running a low 26 creatures and Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker is #27, take him out that one less creature

Forkbeard says... #24

Fair play griffstick, I knew it would be controversial! I'm usually ok for dragons, shrug.

xcn says... #25

There are only so many creatures you need, when you also have ramp, and support cards to make the ones you do play better. Draw like Greater Good helps make the lower creature count matter less by letting you sac creatures on their deathbed to draw into more as well. I wouldn't worry about it.
