Introducing blue to the suicide squad. —Nov. 27, 2020

While playing Magic I ran into an opponent who was using a card called Teferi's Veil. When I saw it, I immediately updated my build to include blue in the deck.

I decided Najeela, the Blade-Blossom would be a good option as the commander because she is 3 cmc or less for Aluren and you can have multiple combats.

Below I'm going to list some of the new blue cards I've added and why I've added them.

Phantasmal Image

I've added this creature because it can copy any of the suicide squad creatures for only 2 mana! Additionally, it works well with Aluren, which is very important for this deck.

Levitation

I've added this enchantment because the deck is so combat focused, giving the Suicide creatures flying helps get through to opponents for massive damage. It works so well with Berserkers' Onslaught, Cover of Darkness, Gisela, Blade of Goldnight, Iroas, God of Victory, Whip of Erebos and Xenagos, God of Revels.

Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive

This card is nuts in this deck, first off it's 3 cmc or less so it works well with Aluren and it's legendary so it works well with Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle. Additionally, 7 out of the 10 Suicide Squad creatures have base toughness 1 so they will be unblockable!

Animar, Soul of Elements

This one may seem a little weird to add but here me out ... It's 3 cmc or less so it works well with Aluren and it's legendary so it works well with Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle, and a ton of the creatures in this deck have colorless pibs in them, this can make it so a lot of the creatures can be more affordable.

Teferi's Veil

God damn! This is a beast of a card I had no idea I needed for so long ... this card is absolutely busted in this deck. Every turn suicide squad creatures come back, cards I sneak in with Sneak Attack don't go away after combat, every time I create a copy of a suicide squad creature with MImic Vat they don't leave play and slowly grow into an army. I'd argue that Teferi's Veil is easily the best card in this deck. It also keeps Flameshadow Conjuring creatures in play.

Bident of Thassa + Coastal Piracy

These cards speak for themselves, the Suicide Squad always get tons of damage in, these cards just help us draw more cards.

Temur Ascendancy

Great card, just another way to draw on ETB's like with Elemental Bond, Garruk's Uprising, Guardian Project, Selvala, Heart of the Wilds and The Great Henge. It also give every creature haste which is huge for when I play cards like Bloom Tender, Birds of Paradise, Selvala, Heart of the Wilds, and Somberwald Sage

Sygg, River Cutthroat

With the Suicide Squad creatures constantly dealing a lot of damage Sygg is just a good way to also get some card draw. It's also 3 cmc or less so it works well with Aluren and it's legendary so it works well with Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle

The trample is uneeded but it beign able to replace itself on etb is worth the extra mana imo. That card is honestly makign its way into some of my decks aswell!

Ambuscade Shaman is a second Primal Forcemage for your deck. Luminous Broodmoth lets you get double usage out of your creatures, and Thunderkin Awakener can bring them back as well. Thunderblust is another good suicide option.

DankMagicianD thanks for the comment! I’ve never heard of Ambuscade Shaman, out of every card you mentioned I think I would for sure want to try it out. Cuts are so damn hard though. I especially love that he is 3 cmc for Aluren.

The only good use I see for Luminous Broodmoth is etb effects or if I already have a sac outlet on board, otherwise the suicide squad will just die on the next turn.

I spent a couple weeks testing Thunderkin Awakener on Xmage (online commander website), it does okay, but I think recursion / graveyard protection is covered pretty well already.

Lastly, Thunderblust is really cool, I just wish it didn’t cost 5 mana to cast. If it were 4 cmc like Blistering Firecat that would be really cool. The 3 red devotion is tough too.

Thank you so much for the comment though, it really means a lot in helping to give the deck synergy. So many people have had a hand in building this deck with me both online and in person. Do you have any suggestions for something to remove for Ambuscade Shaman?

DankMagicianD I tried out Ambuscade Shaman today online, I love it. It's crazy how much a difference 2 damage can make, especially when Gisela, Blade of Goldnight, Berserkers' Onslaught and Xenagos, God of Revels are on board. That +2 ends up being 16 extra damage. Pretty wild

It is a fun little card. I'm sorry I could not suggest a cut for it; this deck is rather different from any one that I play. One more suggestion, for shits and giggles. Fiery Emancipation is triple red and six mana, but it's effect is incredibly powerful in a hard hitting deck like this one. Do you think it's worth considering?

I think your deck would highly Benefit from Mirror March this is a little gem that many people forget about. If you don't like randomness then no big deal but the ability for your Suicide squad to spawn a second, third, fourth.... just for playing them is absolutely insane. Honestly don't knock it till you try it and give it a shot. The tokens do get exiled at the end step but you can easily use a sac outlet to make them useful.

Another fun card is Rite of the Raging Storm 5/1 elemental with trample + haste, Everyone gets one on their upkeep and can't swing at you with it also they sac on end step.

Aside for more card draw or dipping into blue, why did you go 5-color and choose Kenrith as a replacement CMDR?

Tibus Mostly because for the 5 cmc recursion, I wish they came out with new 5 color commanders though because it only works somewhat well. Teferi's Veil is the craziest card in this deck, so I for sure needed to add blue.
