Archfiend's Vessel

Creature — Human Cleric

Lifelink (Damage dealt by this creature also causes you to gain that much life.)

When Archfiend's Vessel enters the battlefield, if it entered from your graveyard or you cast it from your graveyard, exile it. If you do, create a 5/5 black Demon creature token with flying.

Archfiend's Vessel needs to be cast or enter the battlefield from the graveyard to transform. Other than Call of the Death-Dweller there isn't a reliable way to transform it.

If I use Araumi of the Dead Tide to encore Archfiend's Vessel, are they entering play from my graveyard or from exile, or from nowhere/ether...? It says you exile it as part of the encore cost, then copies of it ETB, but I'm assuming not from my graveyard, even though that was where the original card was sourced from. Some clarification would be much appreciated!

I think you need more plays for turn 1... as of now you just have 2x Ecstatic Awakener  Flip, Cleric Class, Loran's Escape.

adding more drops Archfiend's Vessel could have a neat synergy with Nullpriest of Oblivion or even Thoughtseize/Inquisition of Kozilek

Some thoughts:

  • as you’ve already eluded to in your deck description, Liliana, Heretical Healer  Flip is a complete nonbo here, and is likely to be more of a liability than an asset a lot of the time.

  • you have far too few ways to make use of Archfiend's Vessel to make it worth it imo (especially as the only way to make use of it is using the planeswalker that imo shouldn’t be in the deck).

  • I think Ecstatic Awakener  Flip isn’t providing a good enough payoff. Its basically a weaker Grim Flayer (or Tarmogoyf) but requires a lot more effort to have it do anything.

ClockworkSwordfish - I like these suggestions and will have to see how they play out. I was thinking about seeding the deck with more tutors for the Combo, but I do not want it to become "just another CEDH Deck". I feel like more people feel this is a fair deck to play against in it's current form.

Regarding Archfiend's Vessel, you are correct that it would be an upgrade and I do have copies of the card in my collection. I am only not putting it in because of the theme "No Humans". I realize the Vessel comes back as a 5/5 Demon, but I want the deck to feel like a force of nature and not have any human influence. I am weird but that is just one of my personal deck building quirks.

Very cool build! I always found Nethroi to be the most interest of the big Mutate critters, and I hadn't thought of the combo with Scourge of the Skyclaves - very clever!

A while back I made a deck around Grenzo, Dungeon Warden that was also concerned with featuring lots of nasty critters with 2 or less power, particularly if they actually had a lot higher power than that once they were in play. Some other bruisers you can reanimate for free include Arcbound Overseer, Nighthowler, Noosegraf Mob and Sewer Nemesis - they might be worth considering! Archfiend's Vessel also feels like a shoo-in, only using up one point of power but leaving you with a huge flyer.

I found it was also handy to have little creatures who could impact the board upon arrival, namely via some handy removal. Bone Shredder, Big Game Hunter and Duplicant feel like superior choices, though there are plenty out there.

There are a couple other nasty low-power critters I'd recommend - Herald of Leshrac can really rule the board (though he draws a lot of fire) and Doom Weaver seems like a great opportunity to draw a lot of cards. I hope some of these ideas help!

Nice discoveries of Mogis's Marauder and Songs of the Damned. Well done, you've added a creative creature combo to use with Scourge of the Skyclaves in your graveyard by reanimating Mogis's Marauder.

If you want to be more competitive with current low budget then think more about the areas of deck building to take advantage of Nethroi as Commander? For some improvements expand on the three most important areas?

  • Self-mill and other ways to get creatures into your graveyard.
  • A combination of creatures to reanimate with Nethroi that wins the game.
  • Ramp to cast 7 mana Nethroi.

In the simplest terms these are the three areas to consider improving. Consider dedicating more deck spots to each of these areas? Out of these three areas you've greatly improved the second one, creatures who are reanimated to win the game. Next, make it easier to get those creatures into your graveyard to reanimate them?

Sources of repeatable self-mill that's not dredge can be helpful. The problem with dredge is you want more draw to have cards in your hand to make up for replacing draw to dredge. Repeatable self-mill that happens at your upkeep then lets you draw for the turn. On low budget I wouldn't play less than 12 sources of self-mill/other ways to get creatures into your graveyard, it's important with Nethroi.

None of the cards I'm suggesting to cut are particularly good with strategies here. Archfiend's Vessel is interesting, but you can only use it once, that's not good enough when reanimation is a main strategy here. Faeburrow Elder is more ramp that can tap for two mana, but if you control a black permanent then it can tap for three mana. It also has 0 power.
