Aether Revolt updates —March 9, 2017

So it's been a little while since I've had the time to look at the decklist for this deck, but I've made a few changes to make room for the new cards that came out with AER.

In: Paradox Engine - This card can just do so much work in this deck it's actually a little ridiculous.
Out: Mycosynth Lattice - As much as I like this card, in the end most of the deck is already artifacts, and while the mana ability is great, I haven't really run into many color issues while playing the deck, and the symmetry is annoying. Not to mention that it's always fallen a little short of the theme.

In: Quicksmith Spy - More card draw is never a bad thing, and with all the trigger duplication that this deck puts out, there's alot of opportunity for card advantage.
Out: Chief Engineer - Has underperformed for me, and mana generation is almost never an issue.

In: Spire of Industry - A great land to have for this deck.
Out: Esper Panorama - Simply the most expendable land left.

In: Walking Ballista - This guy is an absolute wrecking machine and will fill the construct ranks nicely.
Out: Hangarback Walkerfoil - While he's great as well, I feel the ballista is just better in most ways, and I'd rather keep the other constructs in the deck.

In: Whir of Invention - Artifact fetching straight to the battlefield, sign me up!
Out: Muddle the Mixture - I absolutely love the flavor of this card in this deck, but in the end it just isn't that useful at all.

I'm still trying to find a way to fit Planar Bridge and Mechanized Production into the deck, but I have absolutely no idea what to take out for them.

EDIT: I'm having major second thoughts about taking Mycosynth Lattice out, and really want to put it back in somehow. Still trying to figure out how.

Ghirapur Orrery or Vedalken Orrery could be more creations to add. Maybe if you can afford one or the other, one of the Karns could definitely be a good creation too. Krark-Clan Ironworks or Blasting Station so you can scrap those inventions that do not work, though usually Ironworks is a combo piece but you don't use any of the cards in the combos involving the cards.

That's what I have off the top of my head. I really like the flavor of the deck, and hope this helps!

I appreciate the suggestions! I'm already using Vedalken Orrery, but Ghirapur Orrery could be interesting. I had dimissed it as a mirror-effect and generally don't like those, but it might be helpful. I briefly considered Blasting Station early on, but had decided it wasn't really in-line with my theme. You gave a good twist on how it would fit within the theme so I will probably consider it again. As for Krark-Clan Ironworks, I would really like to put it in, but it's just too far away from the theme.

Thanks for taking the time to comment!

Copy Artifact is a bit cheaper than Sculpting Steel and they both do the same thing. Also, the primer looks amazing!

Thanks for the kind words CthulhusNo1FavCultist, glad you liked the primer! I looked at Copy Artifact but decided against it since it's not an artifact itself, and doesn't benefit from casting cost reductions and other cards that interact with artifacts in the deck, mainly Prototype Portal. With the portal, I can play at least one sculpting steel every turn and just go crazy copying everything!

Wow! So thorough! I'm thinking of making an artifact deck after my werewolf EDH deck (probably with Breya, Etherium Shaper), and this gave me a bunch of ideas :3 As for suggestions, Masterwork of Ingenuity is ganky but on theme. Shimmer Myr is fun as well. +1

Thank you MunchingAberration, glad I gave you some ideas! I was actually a little sad when I saw the full spoilers for Breya because I made this deck like a week before they came out. I thought I was being all original and stuff and all of a sudden Breya comes out with a pretty similar concept. In any case, thanks for the suggestions! Shimmer Myr was actually in the deck for a while, but took it out to stay closer to the construct/golem sub-theme thing that emerged from putting the deck together. Vedalken Orrery fills that role and includes more cards. Masterwork of Ingenuity is very interesting though! Definitely worth a closer look.

Hey SolarisFall! Just wanted to add my admiration to the glowing comments on your primer, I really enjoyed reading it because like you I have been wanting to make a good artifact deck for a while. I did not want to do Memnarch because of how overused I feel he is, and while surfing the interwebs I stumbled on the spoiler for Breya, Etherium Shaper. It's funny, before I looked through the comments I was wondering how you felt about her and then saw your comment above.

Anyway, I say all this to say great job on the deck! I may be stealing some ideas from here once I purchase the Breya deck and start tweaking her to my liking.

Thank you so much UnleashedHavok! Really happy that it makes others want to create non-cookie-cutter artifact decks (I also feel Memnarch is overdone). And yeah, it's a little unfortunate that Breya was revealed only days after I finished the first version of this deck; and while she's pretty great, I still think I would have gone with Sydri over her. There's certainly no shortage of possible shenanigans with her, though, so that's all that matters!

Have fun building your Breya deck!

I think Sharuum the Hegemon would be a better commander, she can recycle your robots, and I think she fits slightly better into the theme. I also think that Sphinx of the Steel Wind would do well to, She's an amazing beater and defender that has some protection from targeted hate (stuff like: Shatter Ancient Grudge Fiery Confluence) and more, red and green don't like fancy-pants robotics and technology.

Thanks for the suggestions SectOfTheSalmon! I agree that Sharuum would probably be a better commander than Sydri, but I respectfully disagree that it fits better in the theme. Sydri is an artificer which is the main theme of the deck, and I wouldn't want one of the creations to lead the rest of the artificers. I initially disregarded sphinxes as they didnt fit my idea of the theme, but since then I've added Filigree Angel and Silas Renn, Seeker Adept into the deck as "not really an angel/human, but as a representation of one" which I could also apply to both of the sphinxes. I'll certainly consider them, but it's doubtful they will find a place in the main lineup.

Funny story; I was totally about to suggest Feldon of the Third Path for your deck, then got really sad that you can't include red. I had been considering working with Sydri instead of Breya because three color is easier than four, but I don't think I can do a deck like this without more recursion. It's so much fun! Is one card a silly reason to commit a whole extra color? I mean, I'm sure I'll use more than just Feldon....

November 29, 2016 7:53 p.m.

SolarisFall says... #12

Well, I don't think a 4th color is necessarily a bad thing, it's a bit more complex to juggle your mana base, but with all the rocks and artifacts that let you tap for any color, adding that one red card probably won't have any impact as by the time you draw it, you'll be able to generate the red mana for it. And it opens up the color for you. I quite like the four-color commanders myself, I just have sort of a love-hate with Breya specifically lol. I would have definitely put Feldon in if I had red available.

I am planning on doing a wizard themed cascade/spell copy deck with Yidris and a mercenary theme deck with Saskia. I discovered with this deck that I quite like the idea of themes, it gives them a little something extra, not sure how to explain it.

Edit: Because grammar.

Awesome deck SolarisFall!

Awesome! How did you get the accordion blocks to be pictures? And what about that symbol thing above the Preface?

Overall, I like the deck very much!

+1 from me!

SolarisFall says... #15

Thank you very much Perfect_Phyrexia and Guerte!

To get images in the accordion, simply use the < img > tag instead of putting text there. In a sense, the image is the text in this instance. The symbol above is again just an image of a fancy page break line instered with the img tag.

Hope that helped! Let me know if you need more info.

Deck looks really good! +1

Saheeli's Artistry? It's a heavy drop coming in at 6-CMC. But it could be useful with the amount of artifact things you are running.

SolarisFall says... #17

Thanks a lot Love-in-Theory! I already have Saheeli's Artistry in my sideboard, the reason I haven't put it in the main deck is that it creates tokens and so doesn't interact with Mirrorworks. It's still potentially so good though, and I can't bring myself to remove it from the maybeboard lol. Still, thanks for the suggestion and for taking a look, glad you liked it!

Metamorph would certainly work well in the deck, there's no doubt about that, but unfortunately I find it's a little too far off the theme. I'm also coming to a point where there's not much I would want to take out and replace. I'm a little scared of Aether Revolt for that reason because I know there will be some tough decisions. Thanks again for taking the time to suggest something!

With Aether Revolt released last month, will you perhaps update the deck and the primer in the future?

Great and flavorful deck otherwise that doesn't look too shabby! :)

Dashiva7 Yes I definitely will! I'm pretty busy with RL atm but I should be able to put some time into updating it for AER soon. Glad you liked the deck and thanks for the +1! Likewise to Optimator! I somehow missed your comment.
