Version 2 of the prototype Golgari Deserts deck.

The first change is that this version has removed Sidewinder Naga (3-mana 4/2 with trample) and replaced it with Grim Flayer.

The rationale behind Grim Flayer is that it's cheaper, and helps us get Deserts into the graveyard early (making for more consistent Turn 3 or Turn 4 5/5 Ramunap Hydras). Besides this, if we have delirium, it has a 4/4 body which is superior to Sidewinder Naga's (they both have trample). Its triggered ability allows us to fix our next draw. Pitching lands into the graveyard from this ability leaves them playable later if we get a Ramunap Excavator, thus netting us a form of pseudo-card advantage.

In addition, this version removed Naga Vitalist and is playing a full set of Channeler Initiate and three copies of Rhonas's Monument for ramp (in addition to the playset of Hour of Promise).

The rationale behind playing the Monument is that it is a ramp piece that dodges most forms of removal (the drawbacks being that it is 3 mana instead of 2, legendary, and doesn't help us cast noncreature spells or Thought-Knot Seer). We are able to play it by removing Sidewinder Naga, which leaves an open 3-drop slot in the curve. As an artifact, it adds a fifth card type to the main deck, which helps us get to delirium for Grim Flayer. If we end up not being able to pitch it from the top of the deck with Grim Flayer, we can always try to exploit the legendary rule by playing a second copy when we already have one on the board. Finally, being able to give a creature +2/+2 and trample might give the deck the extra push it needs to close out games.

  • Overrun on the maybeboard stands in for Hour of Devastation's Overcome, which isn't on T/O's database yet. We probably don't need this card as much since we are playing Rhonas's Monument in this version.

I also removed both Grasp of Darkness from the list and added a fourth Rhonas's Monument and a fourth Fatal Push (it is very easy to activate its revolt clause in this deck). It might be correct to lose the fourth Monument and just add an extra Forest, though. Need to goldfish some more.
