A pauper brew.

I started this deck around Circle of Protection: Red (and all the other colors) since pauper's predominantly a damage based format. After some tuning and researching, I found Rune of Protection: Red (and all the other colors).

The runes are the control-heart of this deck. They're obviously superior to the circles since it's the same card... with cycling. That keyword makes this deck hyper resilient. Cycling fits into the deck just as well as Flash does. I no longer have to worry about have 6 dead cards in my main deck against black or white. I no longer have to worry about getting duplicate Circles. Now they're all "2 mana: Draw a card" at instant speed. Just perfect.

I've playtested against both blue red delver burn, and infect, and thus far have never lost a 1v1 match. That was with the Circles still, so now my odds will only increase!

So now for the breakdown!

----------------------CREATURES----------------------

  • Doomed Traveler : He's just pure value! Two 1/1's for 1 mana, one of which has flying! Chumps well, bluffs well, and holds an axe with the best of them.

  • Soltari Foot Soldier : This guy is basically a white Tormented Soul . Shadow is so niche that he just gets to hit the opponent every turn.

  • Squadron Hawk: Could very well be the best creature in the deck. Cast him and draw 3 relevant cards. don't underestimate a 1/1 flyer on an otherwise stalled out board. Holds an axe well, too.

  • Benalish Knight : This guy's perfect for my deck! Comes down at the end of the opponents turn if I didn't use my mana to stop damage. Alternatively I can use him to surprise the opponent and eat an attacker.

  • Porcelain Legionnaire : I like first strike in this format. 3 damage eats most creatures. My life total is nearly irrelevant since I can protect myself so well; therefore, I can cast this guy for 2 mana with impunity. First strikers with axes are impressive too.

  • Seraph of Dawn : Though she's not the most expensive creature in my deck, she really is the top end. 2/4 eats a flipped Delver of Secrets   and dodges most red-based removal. The lifelink will pull me further back into games that took me a while to stabilize. After all, Delver-Burn can hit for 9 on turn 2.

  • Custodi Squire: This card is plain neat. In a 1v1 game, it's just an expensive Eternal Witness with a better body. If my opponent has enchantment destruction, I can pull them back with her. Otherwise, she usually just gets back a creature. A 5 mana two for one is fine in my book.

--------------------NONCREATURES--------------------

  • Bonesplitter: The aforementioned axe. This card is extremely good value and turns all my dinky creatures into serious must-answer threats. You might ask "Why waste a card to win faster? You have inevitability." While I do usually have inevitability, it's important to close out games quickly. Who knows what answers they'll have in their sideboard? Plus, with all my evasion, It's basically like a free Shock each turn, or at the very least helps my weenies trade up very well.

  • Stave Off : This is always nice to have to protect my creatures from removal. Pay close attention to the wording as well. It can effectively counter a pump spell out of infect, since I can give any creature protection.

  • Pacifism: Pretty much a catch all removal spell, since I'm not worried about too many activated abilities from commons. Helps against scary eldrazi as well.

  • Rune of Protection: Blue : Beats Delver.

  • Rune of Protection: Green : Beats Infect.

  • Rune of Protection: Red : Beats Burn.

  • Unmake: I can't believe this card is a common! Easily the best removal I have access to. Helps against everything, especially the eldrazi that my runes can't deal with.

Last night I lost my first round with this deck. It was a matchup against delver burn, and my record is now somewhere around 20-1 VS delver.

Game 1: I got land screwed. Stuck at 2 lands, drawing nothing but Soltari Foot Soldier and a little-too-late Squadron Hawk, Delver flipped early and hit too hard to recover. Lightning Bolt finished me off the turn I drew my 3rd land.

Game 2: Kept an opener with Rune of Protection: Red, Rune of Protection: Blue, 3 lands and 2 others. I got both runes down and my opponent couldn't win. Cleanup was easy

Game 3: Kept an opener with lands and spells, including Rune of Protection: Blue. Sadly, it was the wrong rune. My opponent threw 21 points of burn at my face before I could stabilize. He was happy to have finally beaten me!

I finally lost a round, but I'm still very happy with my record so far. Infect still hasn't triumphed in 1v1, and Eldrazi got curbstomped by Unmake and Pacifism.
