Mental Vapors

Sorcery

Target player discards a card. Cipher (Then you may exile this spell card encoded on a creature you control. Whenever that creature deals combat damage to a player, its controller may cast a copy of the encoded card without paying its mana cost.)

1) I was in the Addams Family (the musical) and I still love it.

2) Kindred Discovery , Vanquisher's Banner , Metallic Mimic , Curious Obsession , and some cipher spells (good ones include Last Thoughts , Mental Vapors , Midnight Recovery , Stolen Identity , and Undercity Plague ).

ninja988 - Thanks for the suggestions!! Lemme go through them here.

Swapping card count for Stinkdrinker Bandit and Inkfathom Witch - There are two reasons there are more of Inkfathom Witch . For one, her ability let’s me access a higher bonus more quickly, rather than perhaps getting multiple Stinkdrinker Bandit ’s. Secondly, she actually has a conditional unblockable keyword, Fear. That makes her able to join the attack in most situations without external help like Stinkdrinker Bandit would need. However, you are right, Stinkdrinker Bandit ’s stacking potential isn’t really being utilized. So I compromised and made them both 3x.

Oona's Blackguard - I’ll think about it. While she has the potential to do more discard than Mental Vapors , she’s also a LOT more easily removed.

Sygg, River Cutthroat - I did consider him before, some other people have also recommended him. I feel, however, that Curious Obsession gives me more draw, and also serves as a buff. It also, again, is a lot harder to removed than Sygg, River Cutthroat . So I’m gonna keep what I got for this one.

Thanks again for the comment!

Your main creature cipher focus is really on Invisible Stalker. Everything else seems like aggressive Fodder.

That being said, Mental Vapors and Undercity Plague ultimately seem a bit high cost for their effects. vapors could easily be replaced with Raven's Crime. And for Plague, I would suggest just throw in another Shadow Slice, and go to town with those on the stalkers.

Looking at your mana curve, (pretty sexy, btw) you may want to consider perhaps adding in a slightly heavier blue mana base. I love your approach here, whether it be intentional or accidental. The first 4 turns are almost guaranteed to be low cost blue spells and you need to make your board presence as soon as possible. To do that, you need to guarantee you're gonna pull blue over black at the start of every game. Just tip the scales to 11x island and 7x Swamp. Then the black mana will be available right when you need it.

Good luck!

Okay. This is an intriguing one.

I have an excessively casual build sort of like this in modern.

So step one here is definitely ciphers. Call of the Nightwing creates a few good blockers. Last Thoughts draws some cards, where Mental Vapors hates a little. Midnight Recovery is epic after a wrath. And, finally, Undercity Plague can be a downright scourge.

Also worth considering- Triton Shorestalker.

Sorry I can't be more help but that's kinda what I got.

Consuming Aberration should be in there some where it is solid mill. Circu, Dimir Lobotomist is good for your deck and so is Grindclock. Mental Vapors, Paranoid Delusions, Stolen Identity, Whispering Madness are some to think about i personally love the cipher ability whispering madness can really wheel them down if ciphered on to the right creatures. Collective Restraint, Koskun Falls, Norn's Annex, War Tax. might be some good ones to add in with propaganda they stack nicely together.

Guess I could have been more specific :P

You spoke how they tried different ways to balance out aura's, whether through return to hand mechanics, bestow, and equipment. Was Cipher also a result of this attempt to balance? Necromantic Thirst, Sigil of Sleep, Sixth Sense versus Last Thoughts, Hidden Strings, Mental Vapors. I ask because the mechanic itself is unusual, and aura's are probably the only comparison you can make with it; it's like the inverse of an aura. Instead of placing a permanent onto the battlefield that can be targeted, or brought back from the graveyard...you have a spell exiled so it can't be targeted (in most cases) onto a creature but also can not be returned from the graveyard. You switch out a triggered/activated ability for a spell cast. But in both cases you still have the 241 issue.

Ghastlord of Fugue may be helpful here.

Also Mental Vapors could be good as well.

I've been brewing a deck along these lines but with an emphasis on unblockable creatures (CMC 1-2) like Triton Shorestalker who will always get through so ninjutsu can trigger but also cipher.

Whispering Madness, Mental Vapors, Stolen Identity, etc. can really turn the board in your favor.

Counters to prevent board wipes and pillow fort like Propaganda, Crawlspace, etc. to ensure you aren't overrun.

You have a bunch of the pieces here so it's a thought/direction to consider if that play style appeals to you.
