New Phyrexia Deck Archetypes

What kind of deck archetypes do you guys see the newly leaked full set of New Phyrexia bringing into Standard?

Of course this will depend on the meta that develops, but let's brainstorm up some new deck ideas and see what will be possible!

This is my new idea which I think has tremendous potential. It's unpolished, but I'd love suggestions! deck:standard-rg-tempo-new-phyrexia -- Birthing Pod is the new Mimic Vat !

Mono Black Control/midranged with Surgical Extraction , Phyrexian obliterator, Go for the Throat , Doom Blade , Duress , Inquisition of Kozilek , Hex parasite, and Gatekeeper of Malakir .

Infect

Equipment with puresteel paladin and Stoneforge Mystic .

And some decks that are basically ramp into karn.

Here is what I think.

Between NPH and INN, Squak is still going to be really big. With the new blue counterspells and cards like the Annex, it is pretty clear.

An artifact equipment control is also a major possibilty. Mixing the power of Stoneforge, the blades, Puresteel and Dispatch .

Mono Black Aggro and Mono black control are both obviously going to take full swing the same way vamps did. Like yank said, Aggro will revolve around the Obliterator, dismember and the other kill spells. Control will revolve around Surgical Extraction , the Parasite and discard spells.

Finally, infect is going to exponentially grow when people realize zendikar rolls out soon. B/U tezzy artifect decks are going to be the biggest. G/B low cost infect aggro is also a possibility.

And as a longshot guess, I think that red suicide might actually become a viable deck type. Using the phyrexian Mana firebreathers + infect or cards like Goblin Tunneler or Distortion Strike , I could see as being quite hardy.

Nice, those are definitely some strong archetypes I can certainly see coming in. Perhaps we should put together some potential decklists on this site about how they could run? I used similarly costed (and similar function when possible) cards to represent the New Phyrexia cards in the concept deck I linked above. Anyone want to put together sample decklists for any of their ideas?

deck:new-phyrexia-mbc is my version of a MBC deck. Quickly put it together so isn't great.

I'm thinking UG With blighted agents and Mutagenic Growth with other pump. And that Glistener elf 1 drop infect thing thanks to that counter spell and that Beast within UG will be alot of fun. Don't forget Corrupted Conscience I'm definitlty building one.

April 21, 2011 9:19 p.m.

cnielsen05 says... #7

U/G could definitely be cool! I certainly agree that the Glistener Elf will probably have a significant impact on the game. Infect really needed a 1 drop!

People are talking about R/G for the turn 2 win with him as well.

Turn 1: Forest, Glistener Elf

Turn 2: Mountain, Groundswell , Assault Strobe .

Balthasar says... #8

Eww... This is true. The one problem with that style is that we're all focusing on it. Most will have a one drop to protect from that ridiculous combo.

April 21, 2011 9:40 p.m.

cnielsen05 says... #9

Or a free plus 2-life counterspell, eh?

April 21, 2011 9:41 p.m.

Balthasar says... #10

Which one is that one?

April 21, 2011 9:42 p.m.

Balthasar says... #11

omg Mental Misstep for the win against that deck

April 21, 2011 9:43 p.m.

Balthasar says... #12

It's going to be the ultimate SB card against aggro decks that tap out. What do you think of Triumph of the Hordes?

April 21, 2011 9:50 p.m.

cnielsen05 says... #13

Triumph of the Hordes definitely looks cool! I can totally see it as a new finisher in Overwhelming Stampede style decks. Something that generates a bunch of tokens like Eldrazi spawn and uses Beastmaster Ascension or Garruk Wildspeaker would be great to run over someone with that! Could combo well with Phyrexian Swarmlord or Avenger of Zendikar too!

@cnielsen05 Torpor Orb would like a word with your combo.

Haha, that's what all the counter magic and Beast Within are for =P. Plus we could always throw Steel Sabotage in the side if it becomes super relevant.

i think im going to try and build a all color life gain deck. seeing as i'm going to be using 2 life to cast certain spells is a must. any tips on doing this with the spoilers out?

Sorry bro, but the mana from Geosurge can only be used to cast artifact or creature spells...

Guess they realized how bonkers it would be with Karn and Dragonstorm .

LemonyFresh says... #27

Hoardsmelter dragon and phyrexian unlife ftw.

April 27, 2011 11:21 p.m.

LemonyFresh says... #28

Also green ramp, feat. karn liberated, beast within, myr superion, and otherwise green stompy.

April 27, 2011 11:28 p.m.

Zungx says... #29

@LemonyFresh

Hoardsmelter? Do you mean Moltensteel Dragon?

If you do, that combo wont work. The unlife says that you dont lose at 0 and the infect thing. If you do get to zero, you can no longer pay the 2 life cost. Its like having to pay 2 dollars, but having 0...

I guess up until the 0 life spot you could phyrexian firebreath...

April 28, 2011 1:32 p.m.

LemonyFresh says... #30

My bad, I did mean moltensteel dragon, but regardless, that is 14 damage while you still have 10 "life" to play around with, and assuming you hard cast the dragon on turn 3/4 that brings it up to 17-18 damage... just saying.

Zungx says... #31

That is true, he is pretty powerful. Sadly, the best cards in standard metagame will have the be the ones that are the least susceptible to removal or give excessive card advantage.

At the moment, the only ones I can really see filling the inevitable void of Caw Go after zendikar rolls out would be:

Torpor Orb , Surgical Extraction , Mental Misstep and Melira, Sylvok Outcast in EVERY major tourney sideboard.

And if mono black becomes a tourney deck again (which it will), then the Phyrexian Obliterator /card:Geth's Verdict/Hex Parasite /Lashwrithe collection.

April 29, 2011 12:08 p.m.

Xenograft is just absolutely crazy. its easy to combo with.

April 29, 2011 5:19 p.m.

AegairEtapa says... #33

Zungx I'm not entirely sure why you're so certain Monoblack is going to become a tourney card, nor why you think Torpor Orb , Surgical Extraction , and Melira, Sylvok Outcast are going to be in every major tourney sideboard.

All of those are going to be awesome casual cards, and fun for years to come. But I don't see them necessarily being as important in Standard in an environment we don't know of yet.

April 29, 2011 7:04 p.m.

Zungx says... #34

Well, first of all, I think that black is going to become a major tourney color because of the situation standard is going to be faced with.

Control decks are going to lose a lot of tempo without Jace, as such it is going to be like what happened when jund rotated out. Since such a money color left, they had to resort to the most effective creature or spell color. At the time, it was vampires because black had some pretty insane cards. When Zendikar rotates out, the same thing is going to happen. People are going to turn to the color or colors that had the most useful cards until they can find more broken combinations in Innistrad.

I think Torpor Orb is going to become big just because people will be too afraid off caw go. I am not saying its a broken card or anything, I am just saying that many people will buy and use it out of fear of the current archetypes.

Surgical Extraction I will admit wont be as big, but will still have an impact because it does something that has not been none in a long time if ever. It gives ANY color, even colorless, the ability to knock out a win strategy. Something like that is not laughing matter and can easily, easily be worth the 2 life in a green deck that is mutilated by caw or kuldotha.

Like the Orb, Melira, Sylvok Outcast is going to be a fear based sideboard card over anything. A one-of rather than a necessity. The reason I think this is because with zendikar out, infect is obviously going to be big. Even if nobody wants it too, it is going to be WAY to difficult to hold standard without infect. Thats like post alara rotation standard without landfall! As such, Melira can become a very efficient slow down card. Even if it dies to insert-removal-here, that removal was spent on a grizzly bear rather than, say, your Chancellor of the Tangle .

But like you said, we /dont/ know yet. I will agree in saying that I honestly did not expect squak to become so big, thus I cannot say what standard is going to become. But these are my best guesses based solely on the usefulness of those cards in the current atmosphere of the game.

Rage Crank Ascension is my New Phyrexia deck. it improves upon the previous Mindcrank /Bloodchief Ascension combo making it so you don't have to rely on either of those cards completely. comment to let me know what you think.
