Tombstone Stairwell might be my personal favourite card of all time. It just has so many moving parts that you can interact with. It rewards filling the graveyard. It gives you creature tokens every turn. It plays well with zombie tribal. It gives you tons of "dies" triggers every turn. It accumulates age counters. It gives your opponent a ton of tokens every turn, which is very unusual. It activates on every upkeep, not just on your upkeep. It's an enchant world, for bonus style points. All this and it has a cool name, the old frame and a very striking picture. Tombstone Stairwell gets full marks on all accounts.

While there are a million and one cards it combos with, I went for a straightforward monoblack build when I finally got around to making a Tombstone Stairwell deck. Doing so lets you lean into a full set of Crypt of Agadeem, which can help pay for the Stairwell's upkeep for more than a few turns. Dimir House Guard can be transmuted to fetch the Stairwell while simultaneously putting another body in the graveyard. Twisted Abomination does the same thing to grab another land, and Gempalm Polluter can blow your opponent's head off once you have an army of Tombspawn tokens. Withered Wretch can keep your opponent from getting too many Tombspawn tokens if you think it will be a liability, and Blood Artist and Vengeful Dead can quickly kill your foe(s) without even needing to attack once entire legions of zombies are being birthed and killed each turn!
