War of the spark —May 6, 2019

We get one shiny new toy this set in Narset's Reversal. Great card. A quasi-counterspell, quasi warp recursion in a sweet little package that triples its usefulness as a Naus/Tutor thief. New format staple. Expect to see this in many decks that play blue in cEDH.

Allergymedsandcats Selvala Brostorm, Tazri Food chain and the odd Jhoira and Zur storm.

I am liquidating my collection keeping only 2 other decks and building my first CEDH deck. It's a big leap, this deck looks really fun and pushes some diversity in this format which is what I think is great about it.

I am just worried it won't get off the ground before they storm off. I have proxied it up to give it a test run with a Gilded Drake, not sure what I am going to sub the drake in for yet though.

Oh sorry my gameplan. I have trialled Grenzo which felt way too fragile albeit fast and a golgari hulk ballista combo which was really resilient to hate but just didn't have enough interaction for my taste. The Selvala is pretty explosive but I found that if I can respond to her being cast or at least removing her before she can be tapped it can usually slow her down enough to get ahead, the Tazri is something I am still trying to wrap my head around in regards to dealing with him, I am probably aiming to go down the same route.

Sorry this is a wall of text I just know I can't copy and paste this list into my meta and I am just trying to get as much info as I can before I take the very expensive dive haha.

JohnnyCRO Proof that Throng is the best card in the 99.

Hey Allergymedsandcats! I'm beginning to build this deck too, and was hoping a more experienced pilot like you could help me? I'm using your budget list for my biggest reference point for my deck however, because my meta is more casual than competitive insofar it doesn't have stax/blood pod/breakfast hulk/doomsday/chainveil/etc etc. (link here if you want).

What is your opinion on an odd card like Growing Rites of Itlimoc  Flip (and Drift of Phantasms ) to replace the expensive Gaea's Cradle (which I don't have yet)? And since I also don't have Dryad Arbor yet should I still include Crop Rotation just for Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx ? Do you think Exploration (which I don't have yet) is good enough to warrant Gaea's Touch ? Also do you think Birds of Paradise or counterspells like Logic Knot / Arcane Denial / Abjure / Swan Song / Heroic Intervention are all suboptimal for my budget constraints? What other budget cards are worth mentioning for Edric?

I was also wondering if I should include Twincast / Mission Briefing / Flood of Recollection / Skullwinder / Beacon of Tomorrows to make up for the lack of warp density (I don't have Capture of Jingzhou / Nexus of Fate / Temporal Manipulation / Time Warp )? Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer <3

I just read the "Allergymeds why not" google doc, so apologies. I have the khan fetches to take care of the tucking but you include all the fetches and still conclude it sucks, so yeah it's suboptimal but what about a cradle-absent budget list? heroic intervention can turn sweepers into one-sided sweepers which my meta does like, but yeah I agree that it's just a narrow counterspell.

oliveoilonyaasscureshemorrhoid Hey there! There's a lot to digest here and it would be a lot easier to discuss in the Edric discord or in PMs on discord.

Hey there, I am doing a bit of research on The more competitive decks out there for my Stax deck.

  • So the first question is: what kind of "Stax" or "Hate cards" would shut this deck down or make it impossible for you to win under certain singular or combined Effects?

  • And the second question is about Sanctum Prelate as I am trying to gather as much information about the stopping power of calling specific CMC with this card vs certain strategies, Would you consider CMC ,, or CMC to be more effective here to disrupt your gameplan?

February 1, 2019 5:22 p.m.

Wow Kiyomei and Allergymedsandcats are talking, it's my lucky day! I've been playing with both Edric aggro and Derevi stax fairly regularly recently, and dearly enjoy both of your deck archetypes! Ok I'm done, don't mind me, I'm just geeking out lol

February 1, 2019 5:31 p.m.

Kiyomei Hey there! So we go into more detail in our primer, but I think the cards that give us the most trouble are Tabernacle, Stranglehold, Trinisphere and Elesh Norn. I may be forgetting a few but these are very noteable.

As for your second question. 1 CMC would probably be the most effective against us.

If you're doing research, I would definitely recommend checking out this resource and reading as many primers as you can. This will probably end up being your holy grail of cEDH resources.

Hope this helps(tbh its probably the biggest help you'll get lol.)

Thanks for your reply Allergymedsandcats! I've known about that link since it was published and is better-accessed trough this Link btw as yours doesn't work for the tabs on top :).

https://www.reddit.com/r/LabManiacs/comments/5si9gw/competitive_edh_decklist_conglomerate/

Just going around for some personal Replies as almost everyone can conclude that a Rule of Law effect is a pain for a storm deck that wants to play many spells a turn, or that Choke is a really annoying card for Blue heavy pods... Personally, My primer Values the honest responses of players more and makes it more accessible to understand or relate to if you get what I mean :). Of course, I could say "Factor-X is played approx 70% of the time thus one should run Factor-Y to try and hinder a certain strategy" But eh I'd rather have it like this :).

So again Thank you a bunch and I'll keep an eye on this wonderful Edric list for many years to come!!

Kiyomei Right on! I'll be sure to check out your primer!!!

Can i ask, is it viable to play Bident of Thassa and Coastal Piracy in this deck, since they’re both enchantment versions of our commander?

February 12, 2019 9:49 a.m.

JohnnyCRO says... #14

@Noelqkazoo

It has been mentioned a few times already so hopefully this will save bith you and allergy some time;

They are unnecessary and their cmc is too high.

You have that effect in your command zone already. If you play it right, it’s the only one you need. You can play it 2 times for 3 and 5 mana without an issue, and more often than not it will be enough. If you get the extra turns train rolling, they are irrelevant. And if you can’t get rolling, their opportunity cost of drawing them when you don’t need them is too high.

Another problem is their cmc. This deck is extremely low to the ground, even on a budget. Cmc if 3 already feels “expensive”, and spending 4 mana for any effect that isn’t an extra turn effect is too much and hard to pull off.

Of course, you’re free to do whatever you want, but the agreement is that they aren’t desireable inclusions.

JohnnyCRO thank you for that response (i clearly didnt dig through the forums dedicated to this topic enough to come to that conclusion myself). I can see now that the deck is meant to go off as fast as possible before opponents have the upper hand after a certain amount of turns go by

February 12, 2019 11:30 a.m.

JohnnyCRO As always, thanks for being quick to answer on my behalf, when I'm not around.

Noelqkazoo There is nothing I can add here really. Johnny has answered with the same response I would have made. If you are interested in Edric, anywhere from casual to the most cutthroat competitive; we would love to have you take part in our discussions over at the Edric Discord.

Come on in and don't be shy.

How do you feel about the cards Heroic Intervention for protection, Scavenging Ooze to deal with graveyard decks or Champion of the Lambholt?

March 1, 2019 6:57 p.m.

Justin1999 Hello there!

Scavenging Ooze can be a great tech card for graveyard hate.

Champion of Lambholt is not needed at all. I cannot see a use for that card in this deck. We win by chaining extra turns and dealing incremental damage. We do not need a big beater like that in here.

Heroic intervention is basically a way to prevent boardwipes, so its a counterspell of sorts right? So lets look at what an actual counterspell can do. A counterspell can Stop boardwipes, Defend our warps, and Stop opponents from comboing off.

There are a few situations that Heroic intervention can save us where a counterspell cannot but they just don't come up that often out in the cEDH wild. So if you do come across some kind of on board threat that wipes and cannot be countered or a supreme verdict, then sure--play heroic intervention. If not, then it's just a waste of a slot.

how do you feel about Druids' Repository ? Most time I play it it ends up paying for itself anyway and can seriously smooth out sequencing issues/ accelerate to extra turn spells. I also Like things like Nature's Will etc for the same reason (also it gives you a little protection as does Sword of Feast and Famine . Timestream Navigator is a repeatable extra turn spell that is tutorable and the restriction is very minimal in Edric. I also like Words of Wind even though its a bit janky, but it attacks all opponents and it's easy to break parity with lots of 1 mana creatures.

dododestroyer We play Repository. Its great. The rest of those you mentioned, not so great. I suggest reading the primer and joining the discord! We can discuss those cards there.
