Maybeboard

Artifact (1)

Slowly evolved from a "Martyr Tron" to some kind of "Soul Sisters" and finally into this one.

I like it that much, I'm running it for more than four years now (including the time it needed to evolve).

I think it has to be described as a control deck, for obvious reasons. It is not really fast with bringing out the win-con(s) and is best against decks which run a bunch of creatures, but not too much else.

What you got:

  • Board wipes: Wrath of God, Supreme Verdict and, to top it off, Merciless Eviction totalling at 7 wipes.

  • Spot Removal: Path to Exile and Oblivion Ring, 4 each to get rid of most things, not only creatures.

  • Stalling techs: Ghostly Prison to limit the amount of creatures able to attack you and Wall of Omens as a 2-drop with two upsides - draw a card and 4 toughness (and it has a thrid ...). In combination with Ethereal Haze the two stall techs and the removal should provide you the time needed to set up your lock.

  • The big guys: Sun Titan, Yosei, the Morning Star and Wurmcoil Engine. The Titan resurrects fallen Walls (their thrid upside), Oblivion Rings that end in your graveyard and any lands you may find there, too. The Engine is self explanatory, I think. The Dragon on the other hand is your most precious creature - it is one of your combo-pieces to lock down the opponent.

  • The lock-down: It is the interaction of Emeria, The Sky Ruin + Miren, the Moaning Well + Yosei, the Morning Star and seven or more plains, obviously, to get Emeria online. Therefore this deck can't lock until turn seven or eight, at best.

  • Other utility: There is Mistveil Plains as a one-off to sneak in before cast removal (which get reshuffled when fetching) or simply prevent that you die for "drawing cards from an empty library". And there is Sacred Mesa, that can be either stalling technique (you didn't start to live until you stalled the heck out of an Affinity-player with Pegasus token until you can cast Eviction on artifacts - and saw his face of unbelieving) or be the source of endless tokens to race the opposing control deck. Offensive and defensive weapon, you see. The third one-off would be Debtors' Knell, basically Emeria number 5 but with a little push - it could reanimate creatures from your opponent's graveyard (if there are any) you killed off before with your wipes.

The Sideboard:

  • Disenchant: you don't like Blood Moon or Blood Sun or anything messing with your graveyard (Leyline of the Void, Rest in Peace).

  • Eidolon of Rhetoric: While you can play around the above mentioned, the decks you'll hate most are storm decks and combo decks that need more that one spell per turn to go bonkers.

  • Ghostly Prison: Number 4 to cope with really aggressive creature-based decks.

  • Kor Firewalker: Your card against any red (burn) deck. One is nice, but two are a concede from your opponent in about 90-95% of the time.

  • Riot Control: You'll like to have more options to stop creatures and it prevents all damage to you this turn (which is very important against storm decks that try to shoot you - with Grapeshot or something like this).

  • Sacred Mesa: Like mentioned above, one of the better weapons against control decks.

  • Stony Silence: 1:1-swap for your Expedition Maps against anything based on artifacts with important activated abilities.

The Maybe-Board:

  • Altar of Dementia as alternate sac-outlet and to sacrifice mutliple creatures once you manage to get more than one Emeria on the board.

The better machups are creature-based decks. The less hand disruption, the better your chances.

The not so good machups are storm- and control decks because they either go off before you can put them on lockdown or just counter all your relevant spells and hit with their finisher before the lockdown.

Thanks for reading! Enjoy the deck!
